No they are on lvl 3 early in book 2.

1st half of the 1st book is basically just a tutorial explaining the rules of the game/dungeon.

The dungeon reminds me a lot of nethack. Starting with a pet cat, scrolls, potions, spellbound, skills, pets. Classes and races are a little different but in nethack you can polymorph yourself into pretty much any monster type.

Basically yes, after the first book. Moon is doing an ackshually.
Ackshually, there is a book with two levels. It's just that the second level is the shortest in the entire history of the Dungeon.

Carl enters level; Carl destroys level; Level done. Next!

That's not what happened on that level.

Avoiding spoilers but I have to know, is it one book per level so far?
I had the same question when I started. I don't think its spoilery to say I just finished book 6. So far 2 books have had 2 levels, the other 4 have had 1. The author has said he plans on 10 books. So either the number of books will change, the floors will start going quicker, or we're not getting to level 18. I have a suspicion that the lowest levels might be bullshit and go quick since (and they tell us this early in book 1) no one has ever gotten to them before and no one knows what's there.

Just finished book 2, how has no one else made a series like this? Shit is brilliant and can’t really ever get boring or fuck up the pacing when you can just make up whatever you want. I am happy to see he has gotten away from saying + actual percentage boosts because that would get out of hand quickly.

I honestly hope this is made into a video game.

It's basically nethack or one of its variations.

There’s an entire genre of video game fantasy books, litrpg. I only tried a couple other series and they weren’t as good as DCC so I stopped trying the genre, but it’s there if you want more that are similar.

The Ten Realms series has some similarities and was enjoyable. Carl is significantly better though.

A bunch of us have read dozens of different litrpg series, and this is pretty clearly the best of the genre, or at least top 3 depending upon your proclivities. Most of them get bogged down in the "must get stronger" trope, as well as the "hey, this is making me money, let me extend it as long as possible" until it gets super boring and only Tuco reads them anymore (I kid!).

DCC is kind of like getting your first blowjob from a supermodel that can suck the chrome off of a trailer hitch; sure, you will still enjoy future blowjobs from other girls, but nothing will ever quite live up to that first one. And you'll keep getting them in the hopes of finding another one of equal quality.

Based on this thread I bought the first book on Tuesday.

Just started book 4 this morning.

It's exactly the right mix of simple, vulgar and engaging and a perfect blend of science fiction wrapped around faux high fantasy.

EDIT: Oh and I dont have an e-reader so I actually went out and bought the physical books and my local bookstore only had the hardcovers which apparently are the same price as the paperbacks? The jacket art and the hardback color and font stylization is actually pretty slick
