All of these are decent, to really good. Recommend you check them out and watch the trailers and see if they peak your interest.

Annihilation- 2018 Natalie Portman
Life - 2017 Jake Gyllenhaal
Ex Machina- 2014 Oscar Isaac
Source Code- 2011 Jake Gyllenhaal
Moon- 2009 Sam Rockwell
Pitch Black- 2000 Vin Diesel
Pitch Black is dope.

My only issue with Life

the alien was way too smart. I hate movies where the creature is able to understand a concept there’s no way it should be able to understand without at least a scene showing it observing the process. There is no way in hell Calvin should have known how to beat the escape pod plan and steer it towards earth.

Yeah, Sunshine is what I meant, not Sunrise.

I've seen Alien (all of 'em), many times over. Actually when I got into Space Horror around 2012 with Event Horizon etc, one of the first things I did was get back into the Alien movies.

Life and Moon are both AWESOME.

I was hoping Life would eventually get a sequel (Death?) showing what happened on Earth after the story ended. The open-endedness of it freaked me the F out, which I guess is the point.

Only movies listed in the thread that I haven't seen are Source Code, Pitch Black, and Last Days on Mars so I'll give them a go.

Beat 'em. Just got to DS2 last year and it was pretty great even for a PS3 game with dated visuals. It's held up really well compared to a lot of others.

Any other recommended movies that are similar to this? I really like the "existential threat on the edge of space" vibe. Like the vaguely EH-esque Reavers in Firefly/Serenity which were by far the most interesting thing to me in that universe.

I've seen Event Horizon, Pandorum, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1977 version in particular), John Carpenter's The Thing, and Sunrise. I can go ahead and recommend Sunrise in particular as being an extremely good movie with some similarities to EH.

Any other suggestions? I think I heard Solaris (Clooney version) was a movie of this nature but I haven't checked it out because I've never seen Clooney in anything serious.
Most of the movies have already been named. If you want to venture into book territory, featuring an "edge of the universe existential threat" - 'Hyperion' by Dan Simmons is the golden child.

Screamers starring Robocop should be right up your alley. 90s sci fi B movie about two factions on a forgotten mining world in more or less a cold war stalemate that ends due to cyborgs.

Also;

2001 Space Odyssey, youve seen it right?
Species, though this is more of a slasher movie. But it does have some good nudity of one of the most beautiful women ever. Ignore the sequels, they all go down hill fast(second is clearly weird torture porn/fetish stuff)
War of the Worlds
Oblivion
Edge of Tomorrow

fucking tom cruise man.

Event Horizon is what happens when a ship tries to travel through The Warp without the benefit of the God Emperor of Mankind's astral beacon and without a psyker. It is not recommended.

I like the movie but it's so obviously The Warp I find it a little distracting.

If we're recommending cheap yet amusing science fiction I'm going to put forth Moontrap

Has Bruce Campbell as a straight man second banana to Walter Koenig. There's alien artifacts on the moon and they go bring some back and they make cyber zombies. It's pretty watchable.

Man, I loved Lifeforce so much as a teenager. I mean, it has the apocalypse, space zombies, Space Vampires, entirely nude French 18-Year old Mathida May just walking around for the whole movie, cool special effects, London, a fantastic score, giant spaceships, and Patrick Stewart.

And really, at its heart, a love story that spans space and time.

I was going to add Ad Astra to the list but there really isn't any horror to the movie, except that after the first 90 minutes, you realize, to your horror, it isn't over yet and has another 30 minutes to go.
