Look when you toss out hyperbole with ridiculous numbers it is really hard to take you serious even if I know in my heart of hearts you really love EQL and just want more content to keep the love going.

I didn't say that was the numbers for EQL. I was saying that to make a point. But that said EQL lost more players week 1 than Frostreaver did the first two months
EQ Legends — Server Population -66% ATM from peak already.
Frostreaver — Population Dashboard
EQL is on New World levels of player retention. The only thing that really saves it is it cost nothing to produce. If they made a good version of THJ they would not have had this problem. It's a bad game and they stepped over dollars to pick up pennies.

I'm just here to laugh at the lolcow herd that fell for it.

Warrior? The wiki has the grandmaster mini in hate as the guy that drops it, but if you're right that certainly explains it. I haven't done fear outside of the raid instance.
Tentacle Tormenters in PoF as well, just not the Indicolite (I believe).

Oh, no, we spent a few dollars on this project. God forbid.

Bring back THJ and I'll happily play that, but in the meantime, EQL is quite a bit of fun. I'll hit max level in another week or two, grind out some raids, maybe level up another couple of classes, and eventually get tired of it until they release new content. All in all it might cost me $50 or less. That's nothing, and I'll have enjoyed well over 100 hours of nostalgic entertainment and the chance to chat with a bunch of old EQ buddies from a few decades ago. Seems like a pretty decent value proposition for anyone interested in that kind of experience.

What is this, some sort of super ultra mega casual shit? You don’t even play 6 hours a day, good god.

The only way to build a casual/QoL-friendly MMO *and* keep the hardcore crowd engaged long-term is to build out a ton of content and be very clever about how you structure player progression through it.

EQL simply wasn’t in development long enough to do that cleanly before launch. But there’s a real chance they can get there over time as they add content and expansions. I think there’s a good chance they will, assuming the funding holds up.

FWIW, there is another way—but it’s probably the hardest path of all: good PvP.

Good PVP means it has to be consensual, and the game has to have it baked into the foundation. Warhammer was the only one that did it right that way. You can glue a secondary PVP system onto any MMO, but it is going to be unbalanced as fuck. FFXIV and WOW do an OK job of it. EQ ....... no.

I could talk for a *really* long time about what I think good pvp means, but I don't want to derail this thread too much.

Only thing I'll say is you definitely can have good pvp in EQ. I've seen it done. But as far as I know, none of the EQL devs are pvp people, so I doubt it will happen. (Not a slight to the EQL people, I just don't think it's their thing)

I think it's hard to really decide what this game will be until Velious or so. Gear is too vanilla and unimportant. Stuff seems pretty easy, but I can't imagine THJ was a bastion of complexity in classic?

What's funny is it seems we're basically playing to beta the thing, but there are a thousand important bugs that seem to be getting fixed as a snails pace. The THJ guys were moving through stuff at 10x the pace these guys are.

The THJ team were previous EQ devs and decent coders in general. About the only thing they had in common with the EQL team is that they were both very passionate about EQ.

That said, EQL team is miles better than the EQ live team. In the small amount of time since it was announced to today they have put together a very fun game. It is very light on content, which is something we talked about during the betas, but the spell and gear upgrade systems are fairly neat. Moreso for spells, because it is a 1 mote per rank skill up system. They should move gear ups to the same. It's hella gay to need exponentially more of the next rank's motes for level ups past 6.

EQL simply wasn’t in development long enough

They had more than enough time man. They just don't understand what good design is. At this point the game has been "in development" longer than THJ was.

They're now on the unfortunate bi-weekly patching that DPG adheres to which is pretty unfortunate for a game still fixing/finding bugs on the day to day. There's some stuff they can hotfix, but stuff like the still unfixed grouping exp bonus can't be pushed until a full patch. It also means they have on big patch before the 1 month sub renewals/cancellations hit so I would EXPECT them to drop SOME sort of content/event worth continuing the sub in during that patch. If not they'd most CERTAINLY have to drop something the next bi-weekly patch because otherwise you're probably looking at 50%+ drop off of subs (guesstimate, could be lower depending on casuals) and a loss of essentially an entire month of subs. Losing out 2 weeks isn't a huge deal if you can convince players to come back in the scheme of things, but a big nothing burger for a month would be very, very detrimental.
