Outside of logistics, a lot of EQs skill kind of depended on class/role to me. Playing my bard and doing shit like pulling and chain-mezzing still feels much more interesting than a lot of what I do in wow now. But playing a dps like my wizard in EQ was boring as fuck and I'm fairly confident I could train a monkey or small child to do it. Playing cleric was similar, and by the time I quit EQ most classes felt boring outside of bard and tanks.

No doubt certain classes could shine far better with real measurable skill. Monks, Bards, and Enchanters come to mind. There were some chanters and bards that could pull shit off that you would never see from any other bard / chanter on the server.

The only time skill comes into play in an MMO is when you are under geared or under manned. Those are the only times skill comes into play beyond basic competency. I didn't take skill for me to walk behind Hobb in Strath Earthshocking heals just because it saved time while we two man farmed orbs during Naxx(Thank you Hobb I loved you. I was sucking dick for repair gold.). Neither did it take skill for me to follow him around dropping Windfury is WSG while he one/two shot the entire opposing team. It did take skill for my static to farm Shattered Halls in greens and blues at the start of TBC with a Warlock, BM Hunter, Resto Shaman, Resto Druid, and a two boxed Mage because the cool kids got the tanks. Pretty sure we were the first five in the guild to get the faction for heroic. Did a few heroics with that group too prior to raid gear but not many were reasonable without an actual tank at that point. Shit was fun as hell though. Fear, Seduce, Root, Stoneclaw(haha), Sheep on pull, pet tank, scare beast. Train gauntlet and dual heal earth elemental totem and pray while we AoE'd. Good times. Shame the group fell apart after Torum decided to scream at the Warlock who had something to do with itemization IIRC for what felt like ten minutes straight after he got shit on by King Maulgar because it was a crime on par with the holocaust that bears were better for some fights at lower levels of gear. He quit or left after that and I don't blame him. I like to think the changes to tanking that came after that were due to Torum's childish rage fueled rant that night. Despised him for the rest of my career after that night.

i dunno, being a raid shaman kept me very busy. i was always with the tank on the first rush to debuff/slow and i usually died soon after. didnt matter my job was done. then i rez in make mana and immediately buff the others that died. then of course since i was in the rogue group, i was their main healer and i was also keeping them alive. basically i had no choice but to pay attention for hours and hours.

I have a confession to make.....

I ninja looted the Journeyman Boots from Drelzna, had a spear in my inventory already and said "Spear dropped damn". Tree (any of you guys remember him?) was also in the group but since he was a druid I figured he wouldn't mind and all... whoops!

Ha, celestial tomb, fuck them. Never was a part of CoE always knew of them and if I remember right I was in Cestus at a time. I do know it was enjoyable to have CT wipe repeatedly then give up only to have a smaller better guild come in and 1 shot it. Was so great. I completely forgot about the pretty much universal hatred for them since they were garbage. God I really can't remember shit for who I was apart of though lol. I barely remember my character name for my cleric and sure as hell don't for my wizard.

In my opinion, the casuals really did a number on WoW/Furor's idea's as he wanted to make encounters difficult, yet doable but the backlash by the disorganized/fail masses always created a placating scenario toward them.

I don't know if any of you guys remember but the original C'Thun encounter was pretty much spearheaded by him only to be complained about by all except the best guilds in WoW and was incredibly nerfed. This is something I have personally come to expect in MMO games at this point. In other words, the encounters that take the most coordination and force players to execute have been replaced by a "medals for all!" mentality.

On Topic though, talk about a blast from the past. Jice, Celestial Tomb, Sleestak, etc.

Sadly, I remember most of it. A lot of my guildies were actually my RL friends and the rest were people I stayed tight with for years after. Their nickname was Complete Tools on the server, though Thess kind of turned it around for them near the end before they imploded. My jump to CoE came about because I was ready to quit and I was quietly telling other GL which people in my guild were capable of what (I wanted them to have shots at another home) and Leyor basically asked me to join CoE long enough to help get them through PoP endgame. I sort of wanted to do it just to prove I could and I jumped over. My wife and I played like madmen for the entire run through Quarm and three kills in I retired for good. I think I guested along on one CD Quarm run and tagged along on a smaller guild (Hooac) we knew's ToV clear before handing my account over to a friend. Part of me wishes I had simply quit when I stepped down from leading the guild I was in, but I had some friends in CoE and it was nice to see some of the end game encounters. I also felt extremely vindicated as a GL watching how disciplined and sharp my ex guildies who came over with me were on raids in CoE. I probably wasted a lot of my life being a GL, but I also made a lot of good friends (and met my wife), so I don't regret any of it. Well, aside from that fucking Ragefire camp....

On a side note, I was looking for some old posts from the noows archive and figured the old site would be completely gone, etc. However, when I was led to the remains of the old site my security popped up and quarantined:
Trojan:Win32/Giframe.A

Point being, be careful if you guys find this thread interesting and decide to go digging into the old archives through Google.
