I had low expectations going into this season and even then it was a letdown. The show since Season 5 when the writers had to stand on their own two feet has been shit and exposed the writing, or lack thereof. It's been said a thousand times and it should be said a thousand more. That said, I'm fine with the endings the characters got even though most are practically fanfic endings and I can understand how this is GRRMs bittersweet ending he envisioned in context with what we know from the books.

-The realms at peace (what little is left of it), for now, but history has shown that death and argument over succession changes everything.

-The North is finally independent after 1,000 years. The Starks were Kings and Queens of the North before the Targs came and conquered them with their dragons and now that all the pure blooded Targs are gone for good they're back where they used to be. The circle is complete for them, but they are now on their own in the realm.

-Arya has wanted to be an explorer her entire life and her dream was to explore whats west of Westeros. While the Maesters believe the world is round, no one is known to have survived the voyage past the Sunset Sea including numerous skilled people of importance such as King Bran the Shipwright and Elissa Farman, although the latters wrecked ship is believed to have been seen in Asshai. Little is truly known about the city and even less is known about the rest of the Shadowlands, other than fucked up mystical shit goes down there.

-Tyrion is truly alone now. His lands, assuming he's now the lord of them, ran dry of gold long ago. His family, who mostly all hated him to begin with, are all gone. While he's most likely the last Lannister ever, he also wields more power now than he ever has previously as hand to Bran and in the best position to help shape the world. The only thing for me that I would have liked as a book reader would be if Tyrion had closure with or made mention of Tysha to Bran.

-Daenerys is a cunt and I've been waiting for her to get stabbed by Jon for over a decade. Doing it before she even got to sit on the Iron Throne, by one of the only people she believed she trusted, was the best we were going to get. The dragon melting the throne was symbolic and I'm fine with it even though him grabbing her in his talons was over the top even for me.

-Jon mirrors Jamie and the Nights Watch traitors and in doing so he finally understands why they did what they did. Ned and the other Starks always talked with disgust about Jamie and in the end its Jon, the Stark most similar to Ned, who becomes the Queenslayer. Him being banished to the nights watch and then having the unsullied immediately leave the continent was insanely shit even by GoT standards, but the reunion with Ghost and Tormund was nice. There have been kings north of the wall before and Tormund has made it clear in the past that they will follow Jon, so it was interesting for his last scene to be of him traveling north with whats left of the Wildlings and be the only man in black among them.

-Brienne filling in Jamies portion in the Book of Brothers was a nod to book readers and helped to provide some closure to his story, even though his story in the show was badly told. Jamies first reading of the book and seeing how little he was portrayed by Selmy played a role in him wanting to change his ways and turning his back on his sister. He made it known in his thoughts that he took the book seriously and that it upset him and he wanted to live up to the expectations of the stories and men in the book and pondered what his final entries would be. In Season 4 in the show, Joffery read Jamies small paragraph in the book mockingly to his uncle and compares Jamies small paragraph to Sir Duncans 4 pages, stating he must have been quite a man to have so many. When Brienne completes his story it's at least a couple pages long, tells of his accomplishments, and ends with "died protecting his queen", which contrasts his entry paragraph naming him the Kingslayer.

Not happy how we got here and the writers are hacks, but at least after 10+ years of waiting I feel like I have some closure. The books are never going to be finished so this is the best we'll ever get.

I'll never understand the "it's been shit ever since end of Season 5" crowd. Certainly there's been some stuff that was rushed and fell off in quality, but pretending everything since the end of season 5 has been bad is just wrong, too.

That shit is solid. I can get some of the complaints from last season even if some were dumb as fuck, because it all still worked as long as we got the payoff in the endgame this season. Which we didn't. Episode 3 Season 8 is where it will always have went permanently to shit for me.

Well when you have 27 hours of SHIT, some part of it is bound to be decent. Sadly, it was about a hour of it.

I'm starting to buy into the rumor the Barristan Selmy actor was spreading, that GRRM has two books done but has been keeping it secret, waiting for the show to finish. Whether it's a request from HBO, or because he wanted to capitalize on the finale, idk.. but it makes very little sense that he hasn't finished at least the next one in all this time, considering he's written plenty of other stuff in the meantime. It's not like he isn't writing at all.
I would not be surprised to hear an announcement in the near future that the next one is finally coming out.

As for the show, it very much feels like they wrote a decent outline but forgot to fill in the details. When you make a bullet point list of what happened this season, it all seems fine, but it just felt a little 'off' and a bit rushed. like.. 'Dany loses her closest friends/advisors, can't handle the trauma and shock, goes crazy killing people as a result' sounds fine for a summary, but the execution didn't feel on point. Tyrion's speech to Jon, when he was a prisoner, about her motivations actually made her heel turn last episode make a little more sense, it's too bad we didn't have more moments/conversations like that leading UP to the turn.

all this time hyping up jon to be a good and wise king, and having him leave just seems like such an anticlimax. and why have tyrion as hand of the king since he still hasn't redeemed himself at all with all the bad advice throughout.

It's not as if that was the only good shit that season. Battle of the Bastards, etc. Point is these were major scenes/episodes and they were still doing them well...beyond the book story. The Long Night and Cersei confrontation were THE big moments in the end game though, and neither were anywhere close to that caliber.

How the hell do the two people who did the absolute least end up with the most?

What did Sansa do? Nothing besides get beat by Joffrey and raped by Ramsey.

What did Bran do? Nothing at all again.

What experience does Bran even have? How the hell is someone in his position going to rule?

This show should have ended with Jon failing to kill Danny, her killing him in the process driving her utterly insane on the throne being the crazed asshole her father wanted to be.

It should have ended with the North curb stomping the rednecks and dickless since Jon was the "one true king" all of the surviving people kept going on about.
The only reason this didn't happen is Danys army had some sort of regeneration that was 2nd only to the Night Kings ability to summon forces on a 60 second cooldown.
It's funny they spent 8 seasons making jokes about King killer and that was just ok, but when you have a Queen killer, he must die!

Fuck that, her roast beef after a Khal marriage couldn't have been that good on a platter.

Almost 1.2 million now. Curious to see if it takes off even more now that it is over.

Oh, and once again, why did the gate close? If there's still a giant hole in the wall...why?

Seems like they're signalling the Free Men aren't welcome south of the wall. Ditto on why the Night's Watch even exists.

Symbolizes that Jon is separated from everything south of the wall forever: he's now the King Beyond The Wall

My thought on final episode: It didn't check off every box I hoped for, but I was satisfied.

Yeah. I kept expecting Tormund to say something to him about Mance would appreciate what Jon did, and that he was now their king or some other such thing. Looking back throughout the seasons with Jon's interactions with the wildlings, it should have been a bit more clear that they were building Jon up to end his story north of the wall with them.

I thought the scene with Drogon wings behind Dany was cool even if it reminded me of Diablo 3.
