Ianx pretty much said it all. Both Nova and the GotG have been uplifted from a sub-secondary characters in the marvel comics, to very important and developed characters.

Do you have any links that are more, um cost effective?

For that matter I know close to nothing about this team. All I really remember is Nova fromX-Forcea Spider-Man crossover way back in the day when I actually collected comics. What is the required reading that will give me a giant space boner for this movie?

edit I guess he wasn't ever in X-Force, stupid old man memory

yea posting amazon links so you get an "idea" of what to look for, the paperback version is pretty affordable vs hardcover tho.

the graphic that caliane posted is very useful as well, as i said before imo, the first 2 saga's will let you get a "wow this is a solid team", i mean imo GotG 2005 is more of a solid team than any incarnation of Avengers, hell every other issue of avengers is...

tony: "captn america, you too old and stupid i'm rich!"
cap: "fck you tony, pow"
ant man: "wait guys, my robot child ultron 3434343 is coming back to town!"

I saw a tweet a week ago that said this:
"DC/WB say, wonder woman will be too difficult to explain to movie audience.
Marvel/Disney say, here's a raccoon with a machinegun!"

Anyways. People saying marvel is scraping the barrel have no clue wtf they are saying. Iron man was not a top tier superhero when they made iron man 1. Next to this little problem, how do you explain Thanos to movie goers? By taking a marvel team into space. First you introduce Thor, to show there are different realms, therefor taking the world outside the earthly boundaries. Then you introduce aliens in the avengers, to show there is life outside earth, with a small glimpse of maybe the most impressive badguy in the marvel universe. A villain that goes so far he scared the everliving crap out of galactus.
Anyways, now you have to take the space thing to a whole new level. Stay as far away from earth as possible, and not gloriously fuck up like green lantern did, showing the awesomeness of outer space, and then move 3/4th of the movie to earth.

Guardians of the galaxy are perfect for that. Not only because they are, like the avengers, a ragtag thrown together group of "people" who originally have no business being a team, but also because of direct ties to Thanos. Seeing as they use the collector, and a couple of ancients in this movie, makes me believe they are going to tie in the Thanos Quest, the prelude to the infinity gauntlet, where Thanos goes to find the infinity gems. We will also most likely learn that the tesseract is only a fragment of power of an infinity gem. This will all come to fruition in avengers 3, where the main villain, and only villain is Thanos.

People have been predicting the downfall of superhero movies for years, and they only get bigger and better. They are among the highest grossing movies ever. In a time of reboots and claims of movie studios not taking risks, this movie is a telltale sign that once again marvel has the solid brass balls to do something outrageous, like, you know, setting up a movie about a superhero team by making 5 movies about the separate heroes, intertwining little and more obvious details to result in a movie that made disney forget all about the klunkers they had with tron legacy and john carter.

And stop complaining about Zoe Saldana, ever saw her in a fight scene? I will take that over "she looks exactly like the comic book character, who are drawn so fuking anatomically incorrect, they could only be played by bodybuilding pornstars.

zoe saldana in that boring columbinaa movie or whatever was boring... speaking about that i'd rather see that ex mma fighter gina carina? or whatever the one from haywire just don't give her a speaking part... her acting is atrocious.

i've never played umvc but here's a youtube of rocket racoon and the voice actor

besides the crappy hangover movies, he's done silver linings playbook/limitless, so yea he was actually really good in silver linings, and no homo but he looks damn good, most girls i know put him as like top 3 super bang material, he looks so good, why isn't his most valuable asset, his face in the movie? he could probably bring the character to life.

I'm pretty sure I can still complain about Zoe Saldana even if she's the greatest fight scene actress of all time. I never once stated that it was her looks, or lack thereof, that bothered me. I'm sick of her, I never liked her to begin with, and the only thing she has going for her in my eyes is that she isn't Michelle Rodriguez. If we're just going on the basis of chicks that look good in fight scenes, why not Kate Beckinsale? Jessica Biel? Rhona Mitra? I'd even say that Biel and Mitra have the right look too. I prefer any of them far more than Saldana, but that's all it is, personal preference, because I don't like her. Not because I don't think she can do the role. I'm sure Zoe won't ruin the movie, I just wish it were someone else.

Your analysis of what Marvel is doing is great, and probably mostly on point, but I'm just a little worried that people that know nothing about comics will be expecting something similar to the other movies, and it may not be as well received if they make it a lot more tongue-in-cheek. I don't think it will fail by any means, and I don't think that it spells the death of comic book movies either, but the public is very much of the "what have you done for me lately" mindset as we all know, so any significant dip in how well it is received will at least affect future movies somewhat.

We don't have much to go on yet, obviously, so any real speculation is premature. But that's what we do here on the internet, argue with little or no evidence to stand on!

On a completely different topic, PM me if you are interested in the comics shown on that "Cosmic Marvel" reading list a few pages back, and can't find them somewhere like the Bay of Pirates yourself.

Olivia Thirlby from Dredd (the blond recruit) had a really great presence in a super hero movie, imo she had the top 3 best superhero woman showings up there with beckinsale (who really was just portraying selene, from marvel).

But i think zoe saldana will be just like a johansson, just look pretty, but worthless in the end... which is totally opposite what Gamora is, galaxies deadlist woman?

I don't even think that Saldana is that hot tbh. She's just been in a bunch of 'nerd films' so she got picked to be in it.

it's my opinion that thanos will either be the main plot of guardians of the galaxy or a lead in with avengers, it's evident in the comic releases. For marvel cosmic stories i'm sure we can all say the infinity guantlet was one of the best (infinity watch/crusade... bleh like all spin offs), centered around them is thanos, just like the main cast of guardians of the galaxy. There hasn't really been a "backstory" to thanos, just his title should be enough "thanos the mad titan". A 5 issue series just finished call "thanos rising", it finally goes into thanos' backstory and if any of you know thanos you know "death". you can all google the usual "thanos rising 1 - 5" and you know do that...

Thanos is also tying into the current guardians of the galaxy storyline along with "hunger", Hunger is a developing storyline, basically all this cosmic shit is destroying the galaxy and introducing tears in space, so much so that our galactus (616) goes into the Ultimate universe, meets that universes galactus (galak' tus? spelling) and basically is now Galactusx2.

so if you guys really want to know about the guardians of the galaxy, you'll need a few bits.

infinity gauntlet (first biggest crossover and you get to know thanos)
annihilation/conquest (the best cosmic story imo, and involves thanos)
guardians of the galaxy volume 2
thanos rising (expands on thanos origins)

The Thanos storyline ( I think it was just called Thanos) was pretty good, where he's basically the hero of the story, as much as Thanos can be. Such a sweet ass character, hope they don't ruin him making him retard cackling evil instead of just a sociopath on a mission.

Infinity Gauntlet was probably THE defining comic book event of my comic book history. That story just blew my 10-12 year old mind in so many ways. There are so many iconic scenes in that series.

I haven't been able to find a good reading order for pre-Annihilation cosmic stuff (Infinity Wars, Gauntlet, Death of Captain Marvel, Warlock, etc.). I read most of them back in the day, but I want to read them again now that we're talking about it. Anyone have one as definitive as that graphic for the Annihilation stuff?

Some Warlock stuff predates Death of Captain Marvel, which predates the rest of that stuff.

Infinity gauntlet is before more recent Warlock stuff and before any Infinity war stuff.
