How will Uber Elevate and UAM fare when just rolling road robots are refused permission to party in New York?

FedEx took one of their Roxo SameDay Bots to an event in New York on Monday and authorities swiftly asked them to leave the sidewalk.

“You are hereby directed to immediately cease and desist operating your SameDay Bots on the streets and sidewalks in the City of New York,” lawyers for the Dept. of Transportation wrote to FedEx, in a letter obtained by The Post.

“Failure to do so may result in the seizure of the property, notices of violation and/or the commencement of legal action.”

The mayor was not impressed and I thought it was interesting he picked up the loss of jobs.

This seems to me to have been a real Silicon Valley move, don’t ask for permission, just forgiveness.

This is the sort of thinking that underlies many portions of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) startups. It will be ok, regulations will get out of the way.

It’s an old sore but most aviation rules were written in blood and are there for a reason.

Cities booting these things out will be a problem, but not an insurmountable one I think. NYC itself is just not a good target for this shit politically, geographically or uhh, demographically (lowish density of autonomous vehicle / robotics developers there relative to other developers).

Ann Arbor is one like, a hundred cities that would be more amenable to this stuff.

Running into the same issue with drones.
The FAA released a notice in 2016 that says local governments cannot regulate airspace due to federal preemption. I've gotten into a couple heated arguments over that, but typically bow out because we don't want to damage the relationship just for a couple drone flights.

Man Uses Internet Sex Offender Registry to Hunt, Beat Up Pedophiles
Jason Vukovich, 43, was imprisoned for 23 years, February 2018, for a string of assault and robbery charged. It was later revealed, however, that all of Vukovich’s victims were pedophiles. Vukovich believed himself to be an “avenging angel seeking justice,” but won’t be released on parole until serving at least six years behind bars.

Vukovich, who was also a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of his stepfather when he was a child, states that he now takes “full responsibility for his actions” and signals that his crime spree–in spite of the nature of the victims–was not worth the punishment.

All the crimes took place during a five-day rampage where he used his state’s local sex offender registry list to hunt pedophiles, in June 2016. One of the victims was reported knocked out with a hammer and had his truck and laptop stolen.

How the Gunfights in North Mexico That Left 23 Dead Unfolded
When dozens of pickup trucks crowded with armed men and mounted machine guns roared into Villa Union, residents of the small town near the U.S. border began to realize they were the target of a military-style invasion. What followed were hours-long gun battles between a cartel force estimated to number from 70 to 150 men and state police that left 23 people dead. At least 50 homes and buildings were riddled with bullet holes.

In the aftermath, authorities found about 20 abandoned vehicles, some with machine-gun turrets and welded armoring. At least four had .50 caliber mounted machine guns. Residents claimed there were at least twice that many pickups, with some escaping. The attackers split into at least two groups, and headed toward the west side of town, apparently unaware that army troops and state police had been dispatched from the nearest barracks to the westside of Villa Union.

The attackers abducted three civilians: two local firefighters and an employee of the town’s public works department. Two were later found dead. The gunmen also abducted five young men, apparently intending to use the civilians as guides to escape along the dirt roads that circle the town.

The cartel convoys ran into the state police and soldiers on the west side of town, with one especially fierce firefight breaking out near a gas station. In the ensuing firefight, residents recorded the sounds of repeated, sequential fire from assault rifles and the steady chatter of machine guns in long bursts. The gunfight lasted for an hour and a half and left four state police officers and at least nine attackers dead.

Had no idea that anything like this existed, missiles with blades. Unfortunately we can't ever have them in the UK because knives are banned.

Use narwhal horns.

One of the hospital's surgical instrument sterilization technicians failed to complete a necessary step, meaning patients could have been exposed to hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, and human immunodeficiency (HIV) virus.

This kinda annoys me, every time I see this kinda shit.

Article said:
“While we apologize for the worry and inconvenience this situation may cause, our patients’ safety and well-being are our utmost priority,” stated Randal Christophel, President and Chief Executive Officer.

You hear this shit all the time. This is bullshit. It's just bullshit. You can say this all the time but when you let something like this lapse, you're proving otherwise. At the end of the letter, it's also clear when they said: "We have put strict policies and additional safety measures in place to ensure it does not happen again."

Had your patients safety and well-being been your utmost priority, then those "strict policies and additional safety measures" would have already been in place.

Seriously? Nogs would jump out of their Impala with bats, beat it up and throw it in the trunk. This isn't a viable solution.
Eh just make it look like a book, then they would never touch it.

"A nuclear specialist who was brought to the scene found a homemade capacitor.
The device consists of two or more separate conducting plates and is used to store an electric charge, not dissimilar to a battery.
The man does not appear to be seriously injured."
