Not just that, but Anthem was a very expensive flop as well. When was the last successful BioWare game? Like a decade ago?

Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014)? I don't even know how that did financially, but that is probably the last well-received BioWare game.

I remember my friend moving across country and working his butt off to get a job at his dream company, Bioware. Only to discover it was a hollow shell and all the people who had made the games that got him into Dev were gone. Got stuck on Star Wars the Old Republic life support for a few years, then said fuck it, if I'm going to work for soulless shitheads I'll at least make money doing it and went to Zynga.

They've been pulling Barvs for a decade. I am surprised they lasted this long.

the rats will just invade new ports.

I was just about to say this - I would rather have these companies stay in business and keep the cats herded in a couple places instead of infesting everything else.

I could be wrong, but I'd think that having so many flops on a resume would be toxic. There are a lot of unemployed game devs with toxic resumes right now.

Seeing this headline even a decade ago would have made me very sad, but I simply don't care at all at this point. Honestly, it's kind of insane they were allowed to keep running with 400+ people receiving big salaries for the last 10 years considering their output. If anything, EA has been extremely generous to them.

EA acquired Bioware in 2007 for $775 million (approx. $1.26 billion in 2026 dollars). According to Gemini, the total lifetime revenue from all the games from 2007 onwards (not sure if EA saw 100% of Mass Effect's revenue) would have been $2.7B–$3.1B adjusted to 2026 dollars. Note, that isn't profit and doesn't include any of the ongoing expenses they've seen from keeping the studio up and running and paying everyone's salaries. Think they made back their investment? I doubt it.

From what I remember the industry is still completely fixated on "Did you ship a game?" and don't even care of the financial success.

With that said, hopefully Naughty Dog is next after InterGayLactic.
