prequels are fine. a good movie is always about the journey of getting from A to Z. There's plenty of times when knowing where Z is makes A through Y incredibly engaging. the problem is that people do prequels because they generally are trying to cash in on a brand that has already had a complete story arc. the star wars prequels get the most flack, and deservedly so. but it's not about "not caring what happens to obi-wan because we already know he survived," it's about watching what should have been the hope of the republic turn into the scourge of the jedi. you have a story that should be 100% character driven created by a guy who can't write dialogue and who is obsessed with special effects. the idea of watching an idealist become an unrepentant murderer is incredibly intriguing but all we got is, "oh, hey annie! (darth vader has a girl's name...) your mom is dead. that's so sad =(" and then 2 movies of a lanky, awkward teen yelling and crying about how life isn't fair.

the point is that the idea of a "prequel" isn't inherently bad... it's that the people who are making these prequels are.

on topic: I am so not looking forward to any kind of return to the matrix.

Seriously, name a good prequel. It is hard. The new X-Men was more of a reboot, and it was pretty decent. For the most part, they are total shit though.

I did like that little fight scene at the beginning of reloaded, less is more type of thing. Had that been the precedent they set the sequels would have been much better.

I think all the fights in reloaded were done very well, with the chateau fight ranking as one of my favorites in any movie. I can't even remember a single fight in revolutions though...

well, I was thinking across more broad media. Movies are plagued with bad prequels but there's plenty of good video game and book prequels

Video games I would say are different due to the interactive nature of the media. Books, meh, I don't have a good copout for that one, but to say the only good book prequel I can think of that I read was The Silmarillion and that was pretty extreme. I'm sure more exist, I just can't think of them or haven't read them.

I really can't think of many good prequels, I always hate prequels. Godfather 2, of course, and I like Temple of Doom and that's about it. It always seems kind of self-defeating unless you're doing something original, like in Godfather 2 where they used his father's rise to power to showcase Michael's own. That was awesome. Star Wars prequels? Shit was doomed from before Lucas fucked it up. These things never work.
Temple of Doom was the only prequel i can think of being awesome. i actually saw that in the theater and then said fuck it and hung around to watch the next showing. only time i have ever done that. godfather 2 is not a prequel, its a sequel with flashback scenes. keep in mind that the flashbacks were extra long because you probably watched the "complete godfather" boxed set version back in the day. hey i did too. the flashback was the best part of that movie and all the cuba/trial/harpy wife stuff took years for it to grow on me. can anyone name a decent prequel besides Indy 2?

A lot of them are the jack Ryan and heironymous Bosch type books where the books aren't necessarily sequential anyways so they may not really count...

As far as movies go, there really isn't a whole lot of them in the first place... Wikipedia only listed like 30 movies... But the good the bad and the ugly, and red dragon were the only 2 of note.

Good bad and the ugly is a prequel? uh a prequel to what? its the third movie in the trilogy and it ends with angel eyes getting capped, how can he be capped in a prequel if he is around for fistful of dollars and a few dollars more?

and yes, red dragon is a really cool prequel. manhunter is better but red dragon is good too.

Aliens. Not as awesome as the first in terms of claustrophobic terror, but more awesome in terms of upping the ante.

The Animatrix does cover 'prequel' material well enough. If it ends up being Young Morpheus and the like, I'll pass.

Wow. Guess since I don't think of Temple as a prequel (though it is), I overlooked the PREquel in there. Yeah... uh... nevermind

Could Casino Royale be considered a prequel? Probably stretching a bit.

Does Red Dragon really count though? It's based on source material that was actually was published first chronologically. The movie may have come out third (not counting Manhunter), but it wasn't the author going back and filling in details after the fact. Now,Hannibal Rising, on the other hand...
