Any advice for limiting/managing kids internet?

Up to this point they have been borrowing my laptop or my wife's tablet and we keep a close eye on them. That is going to change as I have purchased them each a laptop.

I am aware of Net Nanny, but I was wondering if there are any free alternatives or if you guys just manage it by setting up restrictions in windows and edge? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Some routers have firmware that can allow them to act as choke points. For example, you might set up a MAC filter that only allows your kids to connect with their laptops at certain times.

OpenDNS has a DNS server that is preconfigured to hardblock porn; it can either be set on the router side or individually on each kid's machine via Internet Options if you still want access for yourself or your spouse.

Cloudflare offers family-filtering on DNS now also: Introducing 1.1.1.1 for Families
tl;dr 1.1.1.3 for no malware and no adult sites (secondary of 1.0.0.3).

My advice is to configure the DNS on your own machine to use 1.1.1.2/1.0.0.2 and use 1.1.1.3/1.0.0.3 for the DNS provided with DHCP leases, or hardcode DNS on your kid's machines to 1.1.1.3/1.0.0.3.

edit: you'd need to do some IPv6 stuff (also in the link above), and it's vulnerable to your kids changing the DNS settings (don't let them have local admin...). If they LPE out of the restricted user and change the DNS... get them into some hacker CTFs.

Also interested in a good light weight video editor. I found the last build of windows movie maker but there has to be something better than that old hog.

Not sure where to put this:

I received an email with an *.apm file attached. The source looks legitimate, but I've never seen or used this format before. What do I use to view its content, and is there any security issue to worry about?

Reformatted my PC and went about installing my favorite software. Wow, just noticed that MediaPlayer Classic's development ceased back in 2017. What's a good alternative? Looking for something very minimalistic and simple, but supports all the popular codecs.

Apparently today Ublock Origin is just preventing most pages from loading anything. Any suggestions outside of just disabling it?

I was having issues with uBlock + chrome resource overhead a while back and decided to just switch browsers. Use Brave now. Natively blocks ads and provides script blocking if you want it. You can opt-in to ads curated by the browser if you want to earn some crypto (BAT) for viewing them. Optional though.

I'm going to give it a shot and see what I think.

Is it just using extensions built for chrome?

It is actually a fork of chrome, so a separate browser like say Firefox or IE. In my experience it is much more resource efficient + it is open source. I definitely like it a lot more.

EDIT: Actually you can just set dark mode in Brave itself.

Settings -> Appearance -> Dark

There are extensions that do more I believe if you want to try them. I haven't though
