Cant really compare SWTOR to this. SWTOR made EA fucking BANK through the years. Close to 1 billion dollars through its lifetime and still counting. This game? Im not sure they even recouped the initial investment of $200 million. I mean its pretty obvious that this was not making money since they are in fact shutting it down. If this was some sort of revenue generator, they would still be there for it.

At launch there was over 900,000 players on Steam and they bled off those numbers hard. Their cash shop offers frequently were lackluster and the battlepasses started to get phoned in

The console launch did inject some fresh blood into the game, but those numbers also fell and the most telling thing was the fact that even with monster queues recently for the new content, they were radio silent about new servers or how to address them...presumably because they had been through that song and dance before. Queues were still kinda high even a couple weeks post Nighthaven, but I suspect the queues would have all but evaporated within another month or so.

It’s hard to say Woke didn’t effect this game when they literally scrapped the game months before release and redid everything, and fucked up their art styles by combining all the factions and races to avoid “colonialism” and not enough diversity.

Heaven forbid one faction be euro based, one Asian based and one Mediterranean- gotta combine them into a rainbow coalition That makes zero sense and makes your aesthetic trash.

They tore the game up and cranked out shit in a crunch

The only thing they scrapped was "open world forced PVP with Rust elements" idea, because that is a dogshit model to be honest, especially in a MMO (just look at Dune - people hit the Deep Desert and it became a griefers paradise and now the game is a shadow of it's launch in terms of pop). The faction thing is whatever, the sole purpose of it was for PVP and territory purposes to have different teams.

As predicted, once players leveled in that old NW model they went to lower level zones to kill noobs and steal their shit. This was even evidenced when they caved and opened a forced PVP everywhere server - people quit when they got murdered too many times. They pivoted to a more traditional MMO model, but the "downside" to that is you need PVE content, so they keyed dungeons in an attempt to throttle content consumption and to the surprise of no one, it backfired.

I have over 2300 hours in the game - all this spouting off about "woke is why it died" are clueless and probably never played the game in any meaningful capacity

I don't think the cancellation had much to do with the actual game. There is something bigger going on. Microsoft and Amazon just laid of tens of thousands of employees across all divisions. That isn't a coincidence. They cancelled games and closed studios that have profitable products, just not profitable enough for the tech industry's new focus.. AI.

Microsoft is probably regretting spending the 70 plus billion it paid for Activision. They needed that cash for data centers. All the big tech companies are in existential dread that they are behind and are going to lose to their competitors, not the least of which is China.

So Microsoft, Amazon, etc only care about AI right now and everything else will just be in maintenance mode or cancelled completely.

We can beat around the bush about how much we enjoyed the game when we all "did" play it. But even at my 900+ hours, I still ended up quitting the game 3-4 months after release. But this last page has basically "glossed over" most of the things that were MAJOR problems.

Such as the several redesigns of the game before it was even released. Which went on to punish them with a lack of content across all level ranges with poorly thought out requirements.

- Dungeons were REQUIRED in the main campaign story. So a noobie is just outright STOPPED from progressing the campaign until there are enough people to do the dungeon, which often required at least 3 people to complete the dungeon so you couldnt even ask a friend to carry you.

- The ABUNDANCE of quests in the low levels. So many so that you are doing quests that were often 3-4 levels under your current level - so the exp was trivial, much less the mobs you're killing. Only to move into the next area, and all of a sudden you cant find but a dozen quests total and have to grind the town board to get the required level to get the next sparse set of quests.

- The quests themselves often having a requirement to loot an item or chest in the area, with a long "action button" time (the time it takes to open a chest) that is complimented by a "Guard NPC" on the chest, that instantly respawns. OR WORSE, the quest would trigger based on proximity. So players would end up spawning MULTIPLE npc's in the same spot. Effectively stopping any progress in that quest.

- That stupid Staff that you got from the campaign, needing to be leveled by the campaign. But people would never trigger the update needed to get the higher level staff. So your campaign progress is completely stopped for this reason alone. No way to delete the quest or restart it.

Then, lets talk about the itemization that has been talked about already. The concept of how to progress your craft wasnt even thought out properly. Much less the infinite progression that they ended up tying onto the system at the end. How many hours of my 900+ were tied to stupid shit relating to crafting?

- The idea that crafting nodes went from incredibly abundant at low level, to incredibly scarce at high level. In a game with the "idea" or the "hope" of having upwards of 5000 players online simultaneously. But the system itself cant even sustain but a handful of players out of 2000 (with some servers with an increased cap of 3000)?

- Then, to have an entire gearing system dedicated to "Luck" being on gear in order to progress your craft? Not only did your current gear set have to have luck and +skill tied directly to the SPECIFIC craft that you're doing. Never mind the Bags that you crafted that were indirect bonuses to your crafting and weight carry limit. But you also had to have a food/potion buffs to increase your skill/luck. Then THREE trophies, that increases your luck/skill chance. Then, THEN, the hope of your finishing craft needed an additional Town Buff that would get your higher item levels. So then you had to pick up all your shit to make all umpteen thousand crafts to another town that does have the buff.

- This isnt even entertaining the idea that you have to have a specific set of gear for each and EVERY single craft. So you're out looking for Orichalcum, but your craft also needs Fibers as well. So you're carrying around your Mining AND your Herbalism outfits with their full weight added to yours. God forbid you're doing Furniture which often requires FOUR different outfits in your inventory to get the full spectrum of shit you need. Overkill? Yea, sure. Make an excuse for it.

- Trophies! TROPHIES? Not only did you have to have three of them going for the maximum amount of desired effect. But they had tiers as well! So you're constantly walking around with a subpar gear set designed specifically for +luck, opening crates across an area that people "thought" had access to loot buckets that would contain SAID item needed for the legendary combine (at a less than 0.001% drop rate). Never mind that you still had to have someone make the thing out of other expensive reagents.

- Luck? LUCK ITSELF? They wouldnt even explain how luck worked or if it was even working properly. Someone mining orichalcum for the legendary drops could all of a sudden come out with a bigger yield with ZERO luck, over someone that had a full suit of Luck/+Skill to Mining, gear. Not just a rare occurrence, either. Often times as an average. So what exactly was fucking Luck doing? Did it even fucking work at launch?

- The gear sets themselves for finishing crafts? Rare drops from some mobs out in the world. Totally reasonable. EXCEPT SOME PIECES WERE COMPLETELY MISSING - BETTER YET? Some pieces were tied to quest mobs that you could only kill ONCE in a quest only/restricted area, tied specifically to you. Didnt get that Hat with Jewelry Crafting on it then? Too fucking bad.

- We wont even go into combat gear and the amount of bugs and false equivalents that perks had on them. How long did everyone run around with faction gear because it was better than the top item level gear simply because it had a perk, specific to that gear set, that not only decreased damage from crits (as it said it did) but was coded poorly and reduced ALL damage?

"But this was because such and such." Well it was a shit fucking system if it had to have an excuse for existing. Luck has always, ALWAYS been a shit stat to have in a game. Designing progress with PVP in mind has ALWAYS been a shit experience. Crafters are non-combative in every sense of the playstyle, with your general Open World PVP player in an MMO (not a rated system) that might as well be a prepubescent teen with anger issues.

Lets not even spend a lot of time on PVP. Not only was there a general lack of outlets for PVP. But what was there was the equivalent of running in a fucking circle, over and over and over, to trigger a fucking war on a Fort. A Fort which had a limited number of spots, so not even the whole guild could participate. Then, the other side of that issue. Whether youre defending your fort from NPC's or you're defending it from players - You're stuck with absolute SCRUBS that were incredibly unequipped to handle PVP that is now.. defending your fort? What in the actual fuck?

Which, hell, if you wanted better gear from a chest - what were you doing? FUCKING RUNNING IN ONE BIG CIRCLE to collect every chest in an area. Who the fuck thought this was an acceptable end game?

The game was incredibly incomplete when it launched. Its true in every since of the word that the game had the BONES to be a good game, but a picked clean carcass in the desert can still have good bones. Launching with such an atrociously designed system, from crafting, to pvp, to pve, doomed this fucking game. The bugs being glossed over by people here is insane. They were SHOW STOPPING bugs. Not just Dupes, but actual fucking bugs that BRICKED your characters.

Hell, even if you could look past all the bad design decisions? THE BUGS TOOK MONTHS IF NOT MORE, TO FIX. I logged in for the release of the expansion only to see people STILL having issues with their Azoth Staff. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?

And Im sorry Cybsled Cybsled - But the cash shop is an utter fucking travesty for the health of this game. Its been confirmed by developers like GGG, the Lost Ark team (through AGS itself) and more, that these games can continue to be supported and updated with a healthy cash shop being supported through roughly 10k active players. But the majority of the art team for New World was (at release) all women and two people that cant decide what gender they were.

Which would you rather fucking buy:

Its disingenuous to say that "Woke" or "DEI" hiring practices didnt effect the cash shop. The art team had COUNTLESS civilizations to pull from in order to get inspiration in some fantastic fucking outfits. But NOOooo Colonialism is BAD. Cultural appropriation is BAD.

Remember how bad hatchets were? How you could run up to someone in PVP and Stun Lock them with a fucking Hatchet and win over and over and over again? Any idea what a missed fucking opportunity it was to have a fucking skin like THIS?:

Or any number of fucking "psycho" clown type of outfits they could have came out with? Every server I played on, that one fucking "psycho murderer clown" helm, whatever it was called - seemed like it was on AT LEAST 1 in 5 people. BUT NO, we dont work by fucking analytics at AGS. We design shit with Artsy Fartsy Politically Correct BULLSHIT in mind.

This fucking game NEVER should have released in the state it was. it was mismanaged from the very beginning. Its demise shouldnt surprise a single fucking person here. No matter how much they "fixed" the game - the damage was fucking done and people dont give a games a second chance. Hell. I bought the expansion and still couldnt bring myself to play the game for more than an afternoon.

Yes, Im butt hurt about the fucking game. Its core was the best MMO experience Ive had in over a decade. But to gloss over all the things that were inherently wrong with the game is just some rose colored glasses bullshit.

This. People forget Microsoft has signaled a pivot away from video games. Amazon is just lining up.

I never said the cash shop wasn’t shit. They eventually got the hint and released some cool shit like the winged knight outfit and hippo mounts, but for like a year plus it was some renfaire on acid clown outfits. It took them like 2-3 years to add stuff that was semi decent

The biggest issue is they kept trying to release unisex outfits - I remember people were begging for female themed armor like dresses since the game came out

Game was fucking shit, he should know since he played it like 900 hours, but that was only over the course of 3 months total. There was nothing but dookie cosmetics in the cash shop because the entire art team were woke DEI faggots who didn't know what gender was and were afraid of cultural appropriation to make any good outfits.

And he is 100% correct. Even though he got 900 hours out of his box purchase so it was a good deal for him, the company only got his attention span for 3 total months over the course of 4 years so very limited engagement rates, dead fucking servers, and no opportunity to sell him on cosmetics or other cash shop items.

Also the TLDR for the remaining last few pages people lamenting this shutting down:

"yeah had the game had an additional 4 fucking years of development and launched in it's current state it would of been fine!"

Riiiight. development started in 2016, so had they only sunk 9 years and nearly a billion dollars in development on this game they could have sold the same 1 million boxes at 40 dollars a pop and even further bankrupted the games division even more so than they already did. Game was a fucking massive financial flop on release, mostly due to ineptitude and multiple redesigns and reworks prior to release tunring it into the frankenstein shitbox we got and the only surprising thing is that they didnt shit-can it earlier.
