I tend to agree with Andre that it wouldn't be published in Variety again (same publication that had Kennedy's contract renewal news) if it was official Disney sponsored news.
it seems like a Kennedy story and was done to get Iger to sign off on it by creating political pressure.
The abrupt nature of the announcement, and the female showrunner selected, seem to attest to that end.
