Adam Driver was able to convincingly pretend to be sexually attracted to Lena Dunham.

He's quite possibly the single greatest actor in all of our lifetimes.

All I know is the mother fucker likes him Nachos. He might be worthless as a Sith but goddamn can he berate Harry Potter.

How Star Wars Fans Ruined the Movie Franchise With The Last Jedi in 2018
In 2018, a loud movement of racist, misogynist trolls derailed the beloved family sci-fi franchise.

I hope whoever it was that wrote that article isn't being paid an income for writing that kinda shit.

I have a bad feeling though that he is.

I am really kind of sick of this defense that has been coming out as of late. I've been seeing a lot of it on twitter recently and it's totally fine if you by opinion, taste, etc. believe it's a good movie but don't scold the fanbase by saying they're are somehow mean, hateful, and misogynistic because we disagree.

It's really pretty simple and I think most people who like the movie sympathize.

Leia could have demonstrated force strength in some other way. (maybe a force push or shield that protected the people but drained her... whatever instead of the Mary Poppins routine)
Luke could have been given a much more meaningful send off in the finale
Time was wasted with Snoke in addition to no hint of a greater threat if he was truly meant to die so abruptly.
Kylo is not set up properly to be a primary villain.
Rey's story was not paid off or given proper treatment
Finn storyline spun off without any purpose (though I don't share near the hate on the love interest others do but even still, it seemed meaningless)
Hodo was given way too much weight in the story to have such a childish lead up in dealing with Poe and Poe was to be made like a child in the process
Regardless if you want to move on or not, there should have been more nods to the past. It's silly not to tie Obi-wan, Qui-Gon, Maul, Plagieus, etc. when it's obviously the fans wanted it.
Rian Johnson's interviews were childish at best explaining how he wanted to do the opposite of what the fans wanted. There's a difference in surprising or shocking the fan base and doing the literal opposite of what they want. Surprise is getting a kid a car for Christmas when they thought they were just getting some clothes. Doing the opposite is when you tell your 5 year old not to touch something and then they giving that mischievous smile and touch it anyway.

We didn't get the car, he touched something when we told him not to....

Ok, i'm over it for now. I appreciate "some" of the movie. I liked the inclusion of Yoda. I liked they were at least willing to use Luke. I liked we got to see Snoke instead of him remaining a hologram for another movie. I'm glad Leia demonstrated some force abilities. There are moments. It is a beautiful movie but it's ridiculous to look over the obvious flaws that could be thought of poorly of the fans and simply dismiss them as character flaws of the audience.

I just rewatched the Force Awakens over the weekend while wrapping Christmas presents, and I was surprised how much more I liked it both in comparison to the first time I saw it in the theater and in comparison to this POS

Force Awakens is an okay film. Its main issue is its a weaker copy of A New Hope.

The fascinating thing about that Esquire article is the stunning lack of self awareness that dumb fuck has. Check out this line:

"...And that’s because, over the past year, the conversation surrounding Star Wars has devolved into something ugly and unrecognizable."

Well okay. I can somewhat get on board with this line of thinking... It's just a fucking movie. Please continue Esquire guy.

"They elected an amoral, racist golden toilet for a president."

...
wow

So in this dude's follow-up article How Star Wars Fans Proved My Point About Their Toxic Movie Fandom

"It seems a lot of readers either A) didn't read the article, or B) took this as an excuse to get angry online—because, holy shit, these people went absolutely batshit crazy."

Riiiiiight. Of course. Must not have actually read your article because how else would you explain such massive backlash online over such a simple and non-inflammatory Star Wars piece? Has nothing to do with your words... it's just angry alt-right trolls full of hate obviously... it's the only explanation.

"They elected an amoral, racist golden toilet for a president."

...totally NOT for stuff like this. Y'know... In your mild little Star Wars article that you yourself stated that the topic has "devolved into something ugly and unrecognizable."

Force Awakens did a good job of starting the story and leaving the next guy a blank canvas. J.J. actually did a good job creating characters that could really go anywhere and not painting what would be Rian Johnson in any corner. Sure, we were all leaning certain ways on what we wanted to happen with the story but I was very happy with TFA but it's was like a perfect pass and you think the receiver is gonna score but he fumbles it instead.

I think it was more like the receiver catching it, and running it the other way into their endzone, scoring a safety, then telling all the fans to go fuck themselves. The team ownership then defended this act & statement, and was later shocked to find fewer fans attending the next game.

You all think you don't like The Last Jedi, but really think about how JJ Abrams must be feeling about this movie that literally becomes the shit sandwitched between his two episodes. I'm surprised he hasn't run over Rian Jonhson with his car yet. Dude had set up a new trilogy (albeit while reusing a lot of elements from the first one, call it soft reboot or homage depending on how jaded you are today) and Jonhson decided to just ... change everything that was set up.

JJ prepares a mystery about Rey's origins and we get mysterious glimpses into who her parents could be, and voices from the past. - Nope, parents are nobody.
JJ sets up Snoke as a mysterious maybe-Sith-maybe-something-else and hints about history with him that happened before VII (Han talks about it) - Nope, he gets punked and is out. No mystery or reveal about his identity, we'll never know.
JJ sets up the Knights of Ren, gives them a short but badass scene where we get a look at them, aaaaaand... - Nope, they're never mentionned again.

And now he has to pick up the pieces and I assume IX isn't going to start with Rey waking up on the Falcon as they land on Ach'To for the first time before meeting Luke and go "Dude Chewie bro, I had the weirdest fucking dream on the way here... anyway, off to meet Luke".

Like was said above, the movie had some great visuals and some genuinely interesting MOMENTS, but it's infuriating how little care was taken to make this a middle of a trilogy, especially when everyone involved knows how precious this franchise is to millions of people.

If I had to give my opinion on how the last one should be handled I'd say :

- Start IX with a few weeks / months small timeskip where Leia has died in the interlude from injuries sustained during the Mary Poppins sequence, and the first scene is her funeral.
- Have Kylo Ren better established as the leader of the First Order, with the Knights of Ren as his personal guard (replacing the dead Praetorians).
- Have zero Casino Planets in the movie, zero stuttering hackers and as little of Rose and Finn romance as possible.
- Introduce Grand Admiral Thrawn to salvage this fuckheap and lead into possible new directions with a threat from the Unknown Regions that has been hinted in several canon books.

This actually makes a ton of sense in the new universe.

Luke expired from force expenditure. Leia dying some time later from a similar feat is pretty much canon at this point.

What the fuck makes you think anyone has given one flying fuck how precious this franchise is to the fan base? They shit on the fan base for not liking it, they have no clue what Star Wars meant or who it meant that too. I honestly believe they wanted to ‘take it away’ from the original fan base and remake it in their own image.

We are wrong for not liking it, they are our betters and we still have yet to learn our place.

This was not an attack on your opinion or you, I just firmly believe the makers of this film actively hates us. The fact this film is hot fucking garbage angers me still, much like the ending of Lost still does. They sucked out the Adventure and replaced it with something that directly contradicts the Space Fantasy that Star Wars originally was.

I fucking hate the Progressive Left.

Oh you're not wrong, and I'm not saying they tried to take care of it, I'm just saying they KNEW they should, they KNEW how delicate the lightning in a bottle that was the original Star Wars saga was, and they still decided to go ahead with their idea of what the cool new hip crowd should find in a Star Wars film.

Everything isn't bad though. I still like TFA and I greatly enjoy Rogue One. I liked Solo for the most part, and TLJ isn't entirely awful, it has genuinely good moments for me but they are wasted by the useless shit all around them.

I think the great success of Disney in other areas like the MCU gave them way too much confidence in how they should handle cinematic universes, and really you cannot pick up the formula that worked for the MCU and adapt it to Star Wars, it's not how it works at all.

Best thing that can happen to the franchise is after IX comes out it should be put on ice for a few years. As it is now, Star Wars is so big that it's hurting itself because the decisions around the movies are made by executive boards and comitees instead of trying to be stories on their own. If the franchise takes a break and interest dies down a bit, less famous directors in some years will be able to make some Star Wars movies with hopefully new ideas and explore new directions without endlessly retreading the safe path because you don't want a Star Wars movie to rake in any less than a billion dollars.
