Ignore the price. It's 100% off and free to keep if you get it before the 2nd
I played BDO for a couple months after it released in NA. Wasn’t for me. Too much RNG stacking with harsh penalties for failed rolls. There was lots of stuff I really liked (afk fishing, NPC workers, art design) but the lack of content and emphasis on PVP for endgame wasn’t for me.

I wonder what Epic's stats are telling them.

I would think the strategy behind giving away all these free games is to keep potential customers coming back on a regular basis, therefore EGS is top of mind when they actually want to purchase. It also builds a library of games in a place that is not Steam, so it might convince people to jump out of the Steam universe into EGS.

Here is what I think their ultimate strategy is though...

What they are trying to do is a long play for the next 10-20 years. They are rooting all the age 10-25 Fortnite generation of players into the EGS platform, whereas the 30-45 age gamers are deeply rooted in Steam and unlikely to leave. They will get a few of the older Steam gamers, but they are ultimately content to win the next generation into their platform for life. EGS is also cross platform from PC to console, so they are playing in a much larger pool than Steam is.

So, is it working? Not on me. I have spent $0.00 in EGS, but I am in that age 30-45 demographic and I only buy maybe 1 or 2 games a year.

I've got like 1500 games on Steam, i'd abandon that for all future purchases if a group of stores were able to pull off a 'games everywhere' a la movies anywhere. Until then, Steam it is.

I expect at some point my individually purchased library will mean much less to me relative to a handful of subscriptions that are providing me large back catalogs as well as all new releases.

Subscription everything? Fuck That. Netflix was great because they zigged when everyone else was zagging. However, now that everything is fragmenting into their own subscription services (very much like pre-bundling cable channels) how many can one really afford? Now apply that model to game publishers. And remember, netflix, hulu, et all rotate content too; you know game companies will do that same (we already see that in small ways with games falling off Stream, often due to song/media license expiring). You better hope you finished that game and all it's DLCs before they rotate out...

and if you like a particular years offering of Shooty Ball, Pro League? You really expect that future EA to leave the 2025 edition active after they release Shooty Ball, Pro League 2026?

For some small minority of people, who are masters of the Binge version of gaming, such subscription ideas might work out, as they burn through chunks of the catalog in a month, then unsub (and/or sub to competitor service) for the next period. The rest of us will just get fucked by such a "service".

You're not wrong, just not a good example. Madden for example the primary franchise mode is on EA's servers, as are good chunks of modes for many games. If subscriptions get me the most value, I'm in. Steam's a bit too big to fail so I don't expect it to go anywhere, and as a result it'll take a tremendous value from other services for me to change.

I don't even buy Ubisoft or EA games anymore. I have an itch to play Division 2 now that there's new content.... instead of paying $30 for the DLC I'd rather sub for a couple months and play it and several other games. I play Madden every year... the difference between that and the balance of my subscription cost is nothing for the rest of the gaming I get out of Origin.

Might even get me to pick my Stadia controller back up again if the uPlay+ support that's coming is at no additional cost.

To me, the resistance to subscriptions is not that different from the backlash to the initial Xbox One reveal, where we ended up w/ de facto always online consoles anyways.

It's not for everyone, either logistically or philosophically, but I'm enjoying things where they are now and where they're headed.

Wonder if Steam will have some sort of Quarantine sale and make a killing this week.

Hopefully they give some away for free in that sale or they will look like douchebags exploiting the situation. Lots of people that are quarantined will have no income.
