It should be obvious why people don't mind paying for a new iPhone every two years despite it costing more than an expensive console... because it's subsidized. Same reason MS is trying to get on board with that model (although it's obviously harder when it's a new fee rather than something you'd already be paying, like a phone bill).

What would be nice is if these next gen consoles connected to the home network so you could use them as a sort of media hub.

I fully suspect the surface/720/homepcs/mediacenters to all be easily accessed from each other, windows 8 is in its infancy but they really believe that they have a multidevice winner on their hands and their company wide goal is to have MS shit linked in your whole house. I think it would be very bizarre if the 720 isn't included fully in their plans.

360 does it as well. Just install a NAS and torrent stuff directly to it (many NAS devices have torrent clients installed or available to install) and you're set. You can browse and play any music or videos you want from 360/PS3/PC/whatever.

Point is taken about PS3 as media center. I guess I stand corrected, but I never really used it to watch many movies. All my HD viewing is via ripped 1080p files so if you dont pirate I guess the blu-ray capability is much more useful.

But enough about Ps3, I hope the PS4 launches with at least 2-3 quality titles. PS3 launch games were horrible. Resistance was pretty cool, but other than that there werent any good games for at least 4 months. If the PS4 has say, 6 good games by the 2nd or 3rd month, they will get off to a good start. But if the library is stagnant for months and months, its gonna be a letdown. It will obviously play blu rays and probably come with a reasonably big HD, so that will be good, but when I spend money on a gaming console its to play games.

I'm fairly certain the X720/PS4 launches will be some of the best, if not the best, launches ever. At the very least they're going to have some great AAA cross-generation games like Watch Dogs out right at the start.

Wonder how many people bought a ps3 just for the blue-ray player + eventual media center, since it was around the same cost, if not cheaper then blue-ray players at the time and if that has any effect on this generation sales, considering how cheap a blue-ray player is now.

I personally know a few people that don't game at all, but bought one for that sole purpose but now see no reason to get a new one.

E3 should be pretty exciting, will basically determine whether I buy at launch or not.

Yeah i have no idea why people are so up in arms about the BC thing. I didnt expect to play my NES games on the Super NES... I want NEW games.
I think the part where backwards compatibility comes in handy is if you didn't own the PS3. It makes the PS4 a little more appealing, because you're no longer relying on just whatever launch titles they have or the small library afterwards, but having 7 years worth of games to play right out the door. It'd also be beneficial to developers who are doing series over both consoles. How easy would it be for someone to get into Uncharted 4 if he has no way to play the previous 3? (Though, I could see them coming out with more bundles or HD updates with this system, which I wouldn't think would be terribly difficult for them to do.)

But, at the same time, if Sony really is going to work towards some sort of compatibility thing with Gaikai eventually, it shouldn't be a terribly big concern overall. I'm guessing that the people who are going to run out and get a PS4 on the first day are most likely the type that have had a PS3 for years.

Here's an interesting read lamenting the bigger is better attitude on display at the roll out. It's from AV Club or one of their affiliates.

At Wednesday night's "unveiling" of the PlayStation 4 in New York, Sony did not show us the PlayStation 4, which makes this the most postmodern unveiling I've ever attended. However, the various Sony honchos who took the stage at the Manhattan Center auditorium did describe the heart of the machine. It's "the gamer," or maybe it's the "consumer"-same thing, apparently. The word "social" was used as a noun at many points, as it, too, lies at the core of the PlayStation 4. And then there's the "supercharged PC architecture." You want gigabytes? Brother, you can have all the gigabytes you need. . .

This proclamation of a new era was followed by a trailer for Killzone: Shadow Fall that was indistinguishable from countless other trailers we've seen for first-person shooters in the past. It hit all the standard plot points. The fresh-faced recruit hops off the troop transport. A building blows up. Much loud shooting ensues. (Here's a rule of thumb. If the title of your game contains a colon, odds are it's not a "new experience."). . .

The "supercharged PC architecture" is one of the things Sony did right. The 8Gig of GDDR5 RAM is also going to be the #1 thing to allow developers the flexibility and creativity to make new gameplay experiences. They really did listen to the developers this time and created compelling technology the devs actually wanted.

That said, you still have a host of gimmicky crap like move, and most of the presentation was awkwardly delivered to say the least. Squeenix was a boatload of fail. But Sony did more right than wrong IMO. Even all the online shit they said you can be as anti-social as you want, play offline to your hearts content, and use only the bandwidth you allocate. /shrug

Call me overly optimistic, but I don't think Sony really did anything wrong in that presentation once it got going. The exception being the terrible, unnecessary snoozefest at the beginning, they should have skipped that crap entirely.

The really awkward parts were from a couple game developers (like the WHAT DO WE DO WITH OUR HANDS Bungie guys) and the worst ball dropping was definitely by Square.

These guys were just so weird:http://kotaku.com/5986061/maybe-the-...orm-a-boy-band

Social gaming can suck my dick. It is nothing but a blatent cover for sterile gameplay and rehashed content. I didn't see anything in the PS4 demo that looked slightly new, exciting, original, or unique. More shooters? Check. More drivers? Check. More GTA? Check. BUT NOW U CAN UPLAOD TO FACEBOOOK! Fucking boring.

Of course I'm getting one and I'm not going to pretend otherwise, but I'm sad that "next generation" so far seems so dull.
