On the western side? I'd say it's fair forbigstudios, but definitelynotfor small devs/indies. There's a lot of titles that are exclusive to either XBLA or PSN, though the XBLA titles are all ending up on PC after a month or two too.
I would clarify that to exclusivity hasn't mattered for XBLArecently.

I think/fear that if the 720 is still way behind the PS4 after Holiday 14, at E3 15 we will find out MS has broken out the checkbook and bought XBLA exclusivity for Shadow Complex 2, Trials+1, Spelunky 2, Dust 2, and as many other etcs. as needed, with permanent XBLA exclusivity - no PSN, no Steam, no iDevice, no Android ever.

Has there ever been a 3rd party IP that was only made exclusive for a specific console? I can't really think of one. A company would be pretty dumb to make a hit game exclusive to one platform no matter how sweet a deal they got from the console manufacturer.

Especially in this generation with how closely all the platforms are to each other.

There's a fucking lot of them, actually. Like, try thevast majority of games ever madebefore this current generation? And even in this generation there's a hell of a lot of them.

That was a MS Research proof-of-concept, I'm not expecting that to be part of the next Xbox as much as I'd love for that to be the case.

If a framework or something was available to consumers and developers allowing for that kind of development with the hardware, even better.

I really wish Microsoft would do more with their IPs and convince me that Ineedan X720. Halo just isn't going to cut it for me. Their exclusive support the first couple years of the X360's life was really amazing for me and I'm honestly disappointed in them more than any other game company. They need to get fucking Mistwalker back on board with them, buy the studio and bolster it up if they have to. They really need to expand their own game studios too.

Look at all the fucking properties they have and do dick all with:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microso...and_properties

Exclusives are honestly not very important to the the video game-playing public in North America and Europe

Top 10 selling games in the US in 2012:

1) Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
2) Madden NFL '12
3) Halo 4
4) Assassin's Creed 3
5) Just Dance 4
6) NBA 2K13
7) Borderlands 2
8) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
9) Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
10) FIFA '12

Also look at the top 100 selling games in the UK

http://metro.co.uk/2013/01/14/100-be...ealed-3351774/

The only exclusive title in the top 10 in the US and top 25 in the UK is Halo 4(Microsoft). The only other ones that are anywhere near the top are Forza down at #27 of the UK list, and then a couple Nintendo titles in the 20s as well. You have to go down to #70 on the UK list to find the first Sony exclusive with Uncharted 3. If Sony is going to rely on exclusives to sell the PS4, it's going to fail horribly.

Yeah, I understand that theres a ton of Japanese games that are exclusives, but those appeal to a very small percentage of consumers, and they are not titles that sell systems. The games that sell systems are the ones at the top of these lists, the Call od Dutys, Halo 4s, sports games like Madden, Fifa, etc. I can completely understand why Microsoft may not be putting a priority on indie games or exclusives, they account for a VERY small percentage of overall sales. I'd be willing to bet that the Call od Duty franchise made more money than every indie game combined last year. And don't think for a second that Sony and Microsoft are in this business with the primary goal of making great video games to entertain people. They are here to make money first and foremost.

Demon's Souls is PS3 only and is one of the best games of this generation.
I was going to say this one as an example - and it was not a Sony or MS game exclusive such as GoW v Halo etc - but it was also a small import so to say- and once it got its mass populatiry and money- the sequle was indeed cross platform. I am sure many others would know if it was a paied for exclusiveness by Sony saying "we want this" or if it was just happenstance from the company that was doing it etc...

I will most likely go PS4 as I did PS3, 2 and 1 before it- Nintendo has been a let down really... Metroid and Zelda are the only things I care about from them- and the 3DS for Castlevania Mirror of Fate- when I get around to buying a 3dsXL

Exclusive titles have less total sales? no shit. That is like the worst metric to use...

The power and importance of an exclusive is in shipping hardware, and bonuses and thus profitability for the devs. so unless the companies all decide to share their budgets etc..
And of course cost to port, etc.

I think we'd get some value from a chart showing the ratio of exclusive titles in some metric by generation. You'd see the sales converging to cross-platform games (mostly because of technical reasons) with only exceptions from 'artificially' exclusive games like Halo.

Exclusive titles that are important enough to actually sell systems will absolutely show up on the top sales charts. Look at Halo 4, and there's a couple of Mario games in the top 30.

I'm just saying that at this point in gaming history, exclusive titles do not make or break a system. You could say that several things are more important, such as unique hardware funtions(Wii, or Ps3 having blu-ray), and online capabilities(Xbox Live dominating this sector in the last generation). The big games that most gamers want are mostly going to be available on every system, so the games library is not the top determining factor anymore when choosing a system for most people. It's all the extra stuff like a blu-ray player, or online gaming with their friends, or watching movies via Netflix. I don't think Microsoft is making a mistake by trying to focus more on things like that than having a big exclusive game library. Hell, the PS3 would have absolutely died had it not been one of the better & cheaper blu-ray players when it launched. I don't know how many people I know who went years without buying PS3 games, they just had it for the blu-ray. Game systems can sell a lot of units for reasons other than the actual games.

The US and the UK are two of the rare markets where the X360 is far ahead of the PS3 (Canada and Australia being the other two afaik), so really the UK is not representative of Europe in that regard.
