If you have a Popeys near you that isn't staffed by retards, their fish sandwich is exactly what you want. Its done up like their chicken so its Louisiana inspired, and it uses Alaskan flounder not pollock. When its done right its easily the best fast food fish sandwich. If your Popeys sucks then yea Culver's Cod is the best one.
Magician, I grew up on Popeyes because I lived in New Orleans as a kid. Al Copeland who started Popeyes used to have his restaurants all over New Orleans. I've even been to the Super Popeyes that was somewhere downtown, and it was a buffet. It literally was Popeye dressed up as Superman and it was one of the most amazing culinary experiences I remember from my childhood.

When it was your birthday you used to get to pick where you wanted to go eat and I always said Copeland's. We had one of the locations right across the Harvey canal and it was one of the restrooms my parents used to always go to and I loved. We'd always get the popcorn crawfish appetizer because that was one of my favorite things, and I swear to God it's the same recipe that Popeyes uses. They're crab meat au gratin was also my other favorite apart from there cheeseburger.

They're seafood is excellent for fast food, but it really is contention upon the location you have. I know ours has cycled between wonderful and horrendous. I have one pretty close to the house here in the woodlands but I've been there in a while just because I don't eat a lot of fast food anymore, but every now and then we'll get a hankering for some chicken and go get a family meal and eat it over a couple of days.

Copelands was the first place I went with my wife when we started dating. I have a real soft spot for that place. I think the one there closed down though unfortunately.

Chuck E Cheese or Casa Bonita were the big destination kid's bday places when I was growing up. They were only in Denver, but they were still the go to for the entire state. Packing up in a van with all your friends for a day trip was peak middle class adventure in the 80s.

I haven't been the one since maybe the early 90s before we moved from New Orleans and 93. I thought most of them had shut down because Al Copeland ended up selling off most of the Popeye's stuff as well as his flagship restaurants. I remember what road the particular one that was close to our house was but it really was right across the Harvey canal.

It was such a cool restaurant too you would go in and the main dining area had this giant atrium of like a water fountain and plants and stuff everywhere, was all brick and mortar, but probably the nicest area was the side dining spot that was a another atrium, and it was just booths in a row, super quiet and I think that's where we ate most of the time unless we had family visiting, that was on the big dining room.

We probably went there once a month. I also remember cross the road, there was a strip center that had Ruby Reds hamburgers. It was a grilled hamburger joint and you got buckets of peanuts that you would eat and throw the shells on the floor and as a kid that was such a fun thing, but their burgers were legendary. And I guess if you went West closer towards the canal you at Chelsea's, which I believed was started by the owners of Brennan's. It was named after the dudes granddaughter or something but it was a frozen custard and hamburger stand.

They only ever did three flavors of Frozen Custard, chocolate and vanilla, and the flavor of the day. Mom used to get the calendar and then on those specific days where there was a flavor that she really loved we would go after school and get some ice cream. If it was report card day and you made good grades which my sister and I always did, we got to go to Chelsea's.

Their hamburgers and Cajun French fries, specifically the chili cheese fries, it was all God tier 80s food. And then you would get to get a hot fudge and caray turtle sundae.

I miss New Orleans just because the food was so wonderful maybe it's not the same, but even like the corner gas station used to have great po boys. That's something I haven't had in a long time, I'd kill somebody ever a good fried oyster oh boy right now which was my favorite as a little kid for some weird reason, but I'd also settle for crawfish, or catfish, and even shrimp. And you never put cheese on a po' boy, it's only iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayonnaise, ketchup, and hot sauce. You can have onions sometimes but it's not typical.

There really is no greater sandwich, especially if you love seafood.

I don’t think I ever tried them. They vanished right around the time Boston Chicken was getting popular (before they changed to Boston Market and went downhill), probably in part because of changing tastes. Early to mid 90s you started to see people get more health conscious and rotisserie chicken was the hot thing. I remember even KFC was struggling back then

I've never heard of that chain. I guess it's a northern thing. It was always KFC if I was up in Wisconsin on the farm because that's all they had, anns of course Popeyes in New Orleans, and I guess out in South Carolina it was Bojangles, which isn't bad, but it's not Popeyes.

Roy Rogers was famous for their fixings bar. They were all over Maryland. There are still a few. I used to fill those little paper cups with pickles from the fixings bar as my kids meal.

Hartz Chicken I guess that's another chain down in the south, and it was buffet. Was pretty cheap but it's pretty substandard chicken. Various locations would always be packed though because you go in and load up, but in regards to quality your mileage would vary.

We had one in Brenham, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't necessarily good. Not even certain if it's still there. I don't see them very often anymore, and there's always lots of magicians and legumers feasting, so it's a roll of the dice on whether or not you even want to grace the place.

Problem with buffets is I don't eat like I was a young lad anymore. Polish off of a 16 oz ribeye at outback, no sweat. I typically just eat one meal a day, and maybe if I go to a buffet of some sort I'll have a plate and I'm maybe a half a plate just to try a couple of other things if it's like a Chinese joint.

I think the only thing I can eat a lot of now it's probably seafood. Boiled crawfish or shrimp or crab, I think I can still muster the ability to go to flavortown. Maybe wings would be the only other thing.

At buffets I get the usual go tos, because I have tried everything they have on offer. At restaurants I tend to experiment more. Like yesterday me and my parents went to a sports bar for a cousin's birthday. They had a burger with peanut butter on it. Something I hadn't tried before. It was really good.

Have you tried it before? I was pleasantly surprised by it. Didn't taste sweet at all, just very rich and savory.
No I have not and nor will I ever. I mean I guess the closest thing I probably had is Thai food with like a peanut sauce and I'm not a big fan. It's just not a flavor combination that works for me. Hey if you enjoyed it more power to ya, it's just not my cup of tea. I mean maybe if I had a slider or something just to try the combo, I might give it a spin but I wouldn't order a whole burger with it.

I'm more of a blackened blue cheese burger kind of guy. Cheddar's used to have that one on their menu and it was a go-to when we used to go there for lunch back in college. They actually used Paul prudhomes blackened red fish magic for the seasoning, and I remember the first time I tried it I was like I know that specific spice blend very well. It's still something I'll make on occasions because I really like that flavor combination.

That's a restaurant I haven't been to in a while though but it was always super affordable and had a pretty great menu. They had a pretty banger chicken fried steak.

I even remember Bennigan's, talk about a blast from the past.

That's fair. Some people eat insects, I could never do that in a million years. I have an open mind for most foods, since my time in Japan. So I will give most stuff a try. Sometimes it turns out really well, like the PB burger, other times it doesn't. I had some sort of really fucked up shit from the deli at H mart. Forget what it was called, but it was filipino. Tasted like rotting ass.

I'm all for trying new stuff but I think there are just some combinations of things that probably best I avoid. I still really want to eat a goose, even though every time I've talked about it my mom is like you're not going to like it or whatever, and I guess that's coming from my grandfather having hunted and cooked them while she was growing up, but I don't mind gamey meat. I love lamb and I would eat it more often it's a so stupid expensive.

I have an honestly been to a restaurant and quite a while but normally when we decide to go out to eat, I sit in peruse the menu and if there's something that looks really unique and something like I've not tasted before that might be my pick.

Apart from a good french onion soup, turtle soup is probably my favorite thing in the world regarding soups, and I've loved it since I was a little kid. Give me a big plate of fried frog legs, and I'll be as happy as a clam. They taste even better if you've actually gone out frog gigging, but that goes with anything you actually going fish or hunt for.

My parents and grandparents grew up on foods filled with blandness and sorrow. I first started branching out in my first job at Pizza Hut. First time I ever had anything with jalopen~o was a pizza. Totally blew my mind. When I went to Japan I fell in love with curry and sushi and wasabi. Since then I have found a lot of great foods from everywhere. I got into hot sauces. I stopped thinking about what goes into a dish (other than insects), and judge things on their own. Does it taste good? Does the texture work? That's about it.

I try to encourage my parents to try new things when we go to the chinese buffet they like. They blue screen every time. When they were living with me for a bit pre COVID I actually forced them to come out with me to various regional/ethnic restaurants around Denver every Saturday. It was a lot of fun.

I guess I got lucky because my mom was always pretty good in the kitchen and pretty adventurous as far as food, and I guess growing up in New Orleans helped expand my horizons as a kid.

You mentioned your grandparents and it was that way with my dad's side of the family. My grandma buddy and her famous meal was Bourbon and beef and it was one of the most bland things there is, and dad used to make it all the goddamn time. I don't even know what the hell it was supposed to be but it was basically a pot roast without any aromatics other than onion. Pretty sure it was a back of the box recipe. Grandpa Bob had his famous spaghetti recipe that of course dad always makes, but I've graduated from that long ago.

My mom's side of the family though, my grandmother was an excellent cook, as was my grandfather, and I think he probably had more Cajun cookbooks than I do. I still make recipes that Grammy used to make that my mom used to cook when I was growing up, and even recipes from her grandmother.

If I go up to Wisconsin to visit and I'm with my Uncle Rob, he knows to always save venison backstrap because we do blackened venison medallions, garlic mashed potatoes, and my grandpa's Caesar salad. Paul Prudhomes not just my favorite chef but that of all of my uncles and my grandpa on Mom's side.

Despite not ever having lived in Wisconsin, they would always come down at least once a year when we lived in New Orleans, and one of the biggest reasons was to simply feast. I guess I was pretty lucky being able to go to some pretty great restaurants growing up, I wasn't a common occasion, but it was pretty damn special, I'm something to look forward to spending time with your family.

Doesn't hurt that he will also save a porchetta in the freezer for when I'm around, except I think I make a better one than what you can get from frabrononi's, but I still enjoy them and they taste like childhood.
