Summary:
Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the place Jews and Muslims are killimg each other over, is not actually where the Jewish Temple was.
Jerusalem has been levelled twice in history, so finding exactly where places were is difficult. You know what giant structure the Romans didn't level along with the rest of the city? Their fortress.
Recent archaeological finds and sources from the time of the destruction of the city (eg Josephus) show that Temple Mount is the ruins of the Roman Fortress and the earliest stones there only date back to Roman times. The Temple was located nearby where the earliest stones date back to King Solomon's time: City of David - Wikipedia
What happened is that the Knights Templar showed up in 1099 and assumed that the big Mosque was the Jewish Temple and things spiralled out of control from there.
