I do think it is interesting that they approached Firaxis first with this idea, and Sid said thanks but no thanks. Apparently the idea did come out of valve.

I was actually seriously considering a steambox.

Not no more. heh.

Eh. I personally really loved Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I'm a fan of slower paced open world shooters with lots of looting and exploration though.

Skyrim was good, too, but the Elder Scrolls series has never been my particular favorites.

But yeah this puts me off SteamOS, Steambox, almost all of it. Its crazy how fast something like this can sour a person on the entire package.

There's been no bigger fanboy of Gabe around than me for years. He was our savior, now he's fallen low.

Oh I loved New Vegas. Adored it. Fallout3 I was pretty meh about.

Bethesda did 3. While it wasn't TERRIBLE, and I don't feel like I wasted the money... they didn't capture the fallout vibe the way that Obsidian did with Vegas. Bethesda was more like disaster porn. Which is fine, I didn't hate it. But it really lacked that basic essence of War... War never changes.

The thing I liked about Fallout 3 was the map and the sort of short form scenarios. It wasn't "Fallout" in a traditional sense, no, and I realize a lot of people hated the map, especially the sewers/subway system, but I actually really enjoyed all that shit. The mod that combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas into one game and uses New Vegas' mechanics, loot list, etc. really made Fallout 3 a lot better too.

Its weird but I could spend hours just sorta crouching, running around, looting shit, fighting shit, forget the story, and get lost in the, as you said, disaster porn.

On the flipside of things, the absurd amount of modders that want to sell their work are now being torn apart by the very same people who have been "supporting" them for years. They don't owe you a single fucking thing tbh.

And without people consuming/discovering their mods, they would be complete unknowns. Modders and the consumers both scratch each others' back, payed or not. Paywalls are just going to drive people back to IPTorrents, Pirate Bay, etc. for their content. It hurts Steam, it hurts modders, it hurts the consumer, publisher, devs, etc.

This is the literal definition of trying to solve a problem that never existed in the first place.

You just simply can not implement a system like this for products that were already free. This mod requires this mod and this mod contains this mod. Mods have to be made with the understanding that they are going to be sold, because that requires the modder to then provide support and bug fix. The system would have been fine if it was done for future products so people who do modding would know what they are getting into. The payout percentage is also lopsided as fucking all hell. Steam takes between 30 and 40% of a transaction for games, so know you are telling me that a game is getting a 35% licensing fee for every mod that uses their game? That is outrageous.

Steam has permanently shit the bed here.

Even if they wanted to backtrack on this and act like it never happened, how do you get over many mod makers were more than happy to throw their hat into the ring with steam and we now know that Bethesda is filled with money grubbing retards?

I think the biggest negative thing here for me and as others have said, is why is a developer getting a cut for mods that fix their broken games. Talk about a slap in the face. Not to mention that slippery slope this kind of setup encourages in future games.

I think we have a really great game here, but the UI really sucks and why dont we have a FOV slider? Oh, don't worry about it, the MOD community will fix that shit and we can get payed for it. Also don't forget to leave out that nice new inventory managment we have, we can just have that intern release it as a MOD on his steam account and sell it.

Now we just need blizzard/curse to sell mods for Wow and the apocalypse is complete.
