Oh shit I didn't even think about the impact to something like WoW mod's. Good lord if someone rustles the collective jimmies of all the WoW trolls.... I need to go build a bomb shelter.

Yep and the insidious thing is if people start making more 'free mods' they'll just add a simple content control DRM bullshit to prevent you from loading a mod without an 'official seal'.

1) that 10k figure shows how abysmally retarded this idea was.

2) I wonder how much of that 10k figure is from casuals for lack of a better word who know nothing of mods and what they are. How many think they are buying some dlc or season pass type content?

Monstrous ass loads of them, and you're right on the first point as well.

What a clusterfuck. Gabe is clearly detached from reality. Too many cheeseburgers and vanilla steamers.

Is he really that dense that he doesnt realize people arent making mods to put food on the table? Its a fucking hobby. That just shows how detached from reality Valve must be now.

Though Id say he might just be trolling due to the fact he brings up Valve is what it is today due to mods.

Bethesda is who people should be mad about only giving 25% to modders.
I don't think Valve should get a pass because Bethesda is the one that decided to take such a such a big cut from this. Ultimately, Valve is the gatekeeper, they are the ones that set up the system, and obviously they were okay with modders getting 25% or this never would've been released.

Doing it with Skyrim means they've now potentially established a precedent where 25% is the starting point. If 25% is acceptable, it's doubtful there will be many of the big publishers that will want to change that. And why would they? In reality, this is just extra money off the top for them.

There are some people who put atonof time into modding. There have been mods released that completely revamp the game to the point where it's basicallya whole new game, so I can see where Gabe is coming from in wanting to reward modders in the hopes that more people will be encouraged to create things like this. In theory, I wouldn't have a problem supporting modders who put that much work into creating something new, but how much does Valve's laissez-faire attitude really encourage that type of work?

If Valve wanted to really encourage bigger and better mods, the focus should've been more on rewarding those types of mods. Expand theCommunity Made Modsprogram to the point where the best of the best mods are the ones that are highlighted and sold. Valve's reluctance to have any oversight over things like this makes it so the mod community isn't really pushed one way or the other. Will we start to see bigger revamp types of mobs? Possibly, but in all likelihood, the marketplace is just going to get flooded with the low-effort types of mods that should remain free.

Honestly, I don't think many people would have issue if Valve started elevating certain mods and allow the modders that work the hardest to profit from their work. It's just that that would require work on Valve's part, and they are mostly interested in implementing the sorts of systems where they can just walk away and let it go on its own course.

Prerequisite tech. The internet. That is mighty fine.

...although so close to the end of the game it is useless!
