I didn't realize free soda & coffee was a benefit. I change my answer. Benefits: free soda AND free coffee. I can have as much as I want and they don't garnish my wages

When your only option nearby is Starbucks, free (good) coffee is huge. Starbucks can easily run you $150/month in wasted money.

Forget to answer the questions.

Where do you work? Either contracted with or at a steel fabricator.

How long. Since middle school but full time since 18.

Industry, petro chemical tho I do power plant work now and some commercial if I have to.

Wages, it varies. Depends if I am contracting or working there. I just stepped down last year as vice president of engineering and back to contracting. I get paid lump sum per job and each job is different.

Bonuses. In the past I worked at home for 20 years. Last job bonus included half day off on Friday along with the normal stuff like healthcare and profit sharing. Job before that we got bonuses that started at around 20% of gross salary each summer. Lot of freedom to come and go and not punch a clock. After a heavy turnaround season in the spring we might take a month off in the summer and such. A big one to me is you can see anything on your mind, there's no PC at all. It's pretty sink or swim as well which gets rid of dead weight.

Dell was running the contract for Boeing's IT, but Boeing just re-negotiated the contract, and the new company is expected to pay a lot more. We'll see what happens, but I'm thinking positive thoughts to get boosted to $30+ / hour within the next couple months.

I work in publishing - science fiction, fantasy and young adult novels. Shit money, no benefits. Been doing this just over a year and a half now. I absolutely adore my job though and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Self employed. Wife and I own a ladies boutique in CA. Surprisingly lucrative if you know what you're doing. She obviously handles the lady stuff and I do all the back-end. Was able to quiet my 100k'ish DoD job cause of it and am slowly trying to grow back my soul, which has been going good so far. Loving life.

Changing avatars is sacrilege.

What do you exactly if you don't mind sharing? Proof reading and editing? Freelance or do you work for a publisher?

Your husband is a writer on the side no?

I'm a literary agent.

And yeah, he is a writer; his first book comes out next year. I don't represent him though. I couldn't be couldn't be as objective as I'd need to be.

Edit: As for what a literary agent is... Editors don't take unagented manuscripts so writers query agents first. We sort through hundreds of queries in a week, find manuscripts that look interesting. If something is promising enough (and it is very rare), I sign them, then edit their manuscript until it is in a state I can submit it to editors. If it gets picked up, I do the contract negotiations, and act as their representative for the business side (or anything they don't want to deal with).

so you make money by bringing talent in? That seems like a tough road but one that could have a nice sudden payoff if you happened across a real winner

Yeah, we make a % of everything the writer makes. So you can hit it big and sign someone like Marie Lu (who just sold a 7 figure deal a few months ago...) or it can be pretty average. Publishing is a passion industry though. Everyone make crap money (avg editor makes 60k a year) but it is an insanely passionate group of people.

Plus is is freaking awesome to talk scifi and fantasy books for lunch meetings.

I honestly do love the company I work for and what I do. I think i'm doing OK for being 30 and floating on that stupid liberal arts degree. Plus once you reach the regional level that's when you start making bank.

Where do you work? One of the major freight companies.

What do you do? Senior Capacity Buyer

What field/industry? Procurement

Wages? 48000

Bonuses/SEP? Averaging $1400 a month so far, third quarter will be the best quarter.

Benefits? Medical, dental, 401k, $3000 every 6 months toward a graduate degree.

How long have you been there?
13 months.

I basically spend all day on the phone/email negotiating freight transportation rates. I find it easy and it's very dynamic due to the market constantly fluctuating. I like the job because there's a very clear scoreboard by which you can evaluate yourself vs your contemporaries. This makes negotiating for a promotion or a raise extremely simple. I started at 36k with a lower bonus structure and I've already been able to get a promotion and another raise since I started. I'd eventually like to be in charge of procurement for a moderately sized manufacturing company, but I do find it kind of limiting because like I said this job is easy to me and the earning potential makes changing jobs kind of dumb from a short term perspective.
