I know what you mean, while they were before my time, they were still on the radio and I disliked them growing up too. Everything else I had heard from them is soft rock or pop shit, but 25 or 6 to 4 goes pretty hard for it's time. I think that particular song is on a bunch of 80s/90s/00s hard rock and metal band's most influential list.

What made me give at least the one song a chance was listing to or reading some interview (back in the aughts) about how influential they actually were. Where the first two(?) albums were more rock, then they went full speed into sappy soft rock after that. Basically, many of the deep cuts that didn't make the radio are closer to The Doors, Hendrix, and Zeppelin but their "hits" were all soft (outside of 25 or 6 to 4).

Never took the time before, but listening through the first album, there is some heavier classic blues rock that feels right at home in the late 60s and early 70s:

I remember watching something on TV a long time ago where the band really wanted to go more into harder rock but their slower stuff kept being their biggest hits, so they ended up going in that direction even though they really didn't want to. Some of the band members really didn't want to do the slower stuff at all but it paid the bills.

Even though it's a cover, I'm partial to "I'm a Man."
