Really hope they stick with the PVP balancing not effecting PVE. Trion devs came out and clearly stated that they wouldn't nerf PVE because of PVP and that promise lasted like, what, a week after launch? Which is what led to the amazing diversity of class builds getting fucked. Too many games tack on PVP and end up letting it ruin their game. It's like creating the perfect human specimen in a lab, then splicing in the gene for cancer. Genius.

In the video they mention that Bob allows them to balance in general area it needs to be, then they start tweaking it more precisely. It's no just balancing blindly against Bob.

I hope they manage to balance PvP and PvE independently of each other, I'm not big into PvP so when it fucks up my PvE I get upset.

Didn't EQII have the game set where abilities worked differently in PVP? Why not just do that?

Yes they did, for items as well and it worked well. I always thought pvp in eq2 was the best implementation of pvp. Since leveling at the time took quite a while most of your pvp was just part of what you did as you leveled to control territory ( dungeons and such ). Which to me is the only pvp that makes sense in MMOs. Also, one of the coolest things in eq2 pvp was that tanks were still tanks, they could taunt in pvp... the "trinity" still applied in group pvp so you still had a good group dynamic as well.

I like that they're pushing the social aspect of MMOs. No one really does that anymore.

Wonder if there will be public dungeons?

I hadn't seen confirmation that Settlers wouldn't be able to build stuffanywhereprior to that video (but it was a pretty safe assumption). The fact that you can build a camp fire anywhere is interesting, but I don't see how we won't be tripping over camp fires every 5 feet in capital cities and outposts. (Yes, I know they said that you want to be the special snowflake with your fire in a unique spot, but you know Timmy Casual is just gonna drop his shit wherever there's room and spam, "CLICK MY FIRE AND I'LL CLICK YOURS," in /say.)

I assume you won't be allowed to drop them in main cities as they seem to be implying they give you a buff to fight NPC's. You also have to factor in not everyone is going to be a settler. Hell I'd say less then 1/4 of the player base will be settlers. So I highly doubt the scenario you speak of will occur at all. Matter of fact I don't think it will even come close to being an issue.

The biggest issue for paths IMO will be the Explorer path. I think they will make the exploring to easy and piss a lot of people off because they have gone too care bear. For instance in one video I saw arrows directing you were to go etc. Now maybe this is only in the first few levels but really? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Let's hope the arrows are only for a sense of direction rather then clearly pointing you where to go.

How do you guys feel about flying mounts? Specifically in regards to Wildstar, not just MMO in general.

I don't usually mind flying, I actually enjoy it quite a bit in WoW...even if I agree that it trivialize the content a bit, it's not s huge issue in WoW.

I am a bit concerned about it in Wildstar, specifically about how it will affect the explorer path. They are about jumping puzzles, and reaching the highest points in each maps. They can discover a tunnel system in maps that allow for fast travel. They seem to have some "races" type missions. All of which would be seriously impacted by flying.

One aspect of the settler would also be affected although to much more, limited extent. Settler can expand the taxi services in a map, this specific aspect would also be negatively impacted by flying mounts since people wouldn't really bother with the taxi. (I know in wow I usually fly everywhere rather then flight path except when going across zones and just afk while traveling).

Aside from that I wouldn't care much.

Z axis movement is great. The problem comes in when the game is developed for 2 dimensions instead of 3.

Eve is the only MMO I've played that made a real good stab at a fully 3d environment. But it's pretty core to eve. Everyone else seems to realize that it's a neat feature but loaded with technical problems and probably not worth the time investment so they wind up just sorta just half-assing it.

The smart money is on wildstar half-assing it unless they specifically wrote their client to incorporate exactly that. Which I dunno, maybe they did. It doesn't really -look- that way from the promo's so far though.

I really enjoyed flying to but it certainly does trivialize content. Surely they could simply put flying NPC's to shoot you down around the explorer area's. Might be too much of a hassle though. Flying mounts are a good feature to add a bit into a games life span IMO. Once everyones explored the main world release an expansion that has a whole continent created specifically for flying mounts. Flying mounts implemented correctly are great but definitely shouldn't be a launch feature unless your game was built from the ground up with flying mounts as a feature.

Wildstar devs have already stated that they built the world with the intent to fly so I don't think you have anything to worry about from a technical standpoint. One of the ongoing debates currently is how flying mounts have led to the trivialization of content or player vs player interaction.
