I have very thick hair, no receding. Also a thick beard. Beard went gray around 30. My hair is mostly gray now. I'm just over 50, so not doing too badly. However, my pubes have started showing gray. That's some bullshit.

Thanks, I also have been told diabetes can affect the smaller blood vessels particularly in the eyes which has got me concerned/paranoid. Hoping its just age.

It absolutely does. My vision has progressively gotten worse in the the last decade.
I was under the impression it affected your extremities, like feet and hands, prior to the blindness

Also correct. My left foot is always swollen.
So I just turned 57, and have noticed a sharp decline in my vision. I'm not sure if it's coincidence but I have also been recently prescribed metformin. Anyone else in the same boat?

Metformin doesn't cause your vision loss. The blurriness I have started well before I started taking it. That is your type II diabetes fuckin with you. Stop taking the metformin and your vision will still get progressively worse regardless.

FUCK we getting old?

Side note on metformin, anyone else find the pills stink like hell? My wife thinks they are probably coated in fish oil to ease digestion.

Not my metformin, but whatever the coating is for my hydrochlorothiazide smells....fishy.

50 today. Outlived my parents and only sibling. Still in pretty good health outside of could use going on a diet,187lbs at 5'11 but its in all the wrong places, and my near vision is pretty shit and need reading glasses (1-2' from face).

Happy belated bro. 187 at 5'11" seems pretty much the goal at 50 man.

Maybe you're turning into a superheroine? I got a few over the years, my side burns. Plucked them at first. Not any more, aiming for superman grey hair.
I was rocking a solid Reed Richards look in my late 20's. Now between the gray, the beard, and letting everything grow out I look like the temu Karl Marx.

Worst part of getting old is watching our parents age so much after about 70yrs old and start passing away. We really need to pay a lot of attention to what caregivers are doing to them at all times. Quick story from this week how one 5 minute fuck up can take your aging parents.

Last week my 75yr old father in law had a stroke. He was in the hospital for a couple days and they were worried about him getting enough nutrition so they put in a feeding tube and basically gave him Ensure or something like that. His brain scan said the swelling was going down and he would likely start remembering family members and regain a decent amount of memory in 3-4 weeks. Day 4 my wife said he was doing better. Day 5 the whole family was there to see improvements and one of the personal care assistants comes in to change the bed pad under him. Rolled him to one side, then the other side and he coughed a bit. Then they were going to change his catheter so family members left the room for a couple minutes.

Assistant lays him flat on his back and he coughed a bit more and within a minute his heart stops. Alarms go off and he's swarmed by doctors and they revive him, but his heart had stopped for 5 minutes. They took him to the ICU, put him on a ventilator and gave him meds to increase his blood pressure. The following day he was so hot from the meds they put ice packs on him. His kidneys shut down, liver was failing, and he still had fluid in his lungs. Doctors said he would not recover and recommended taking him off life support. His whole family was there. Priest came in to give prayers and then the turned off life support. I got a text from my wife that said 'He's gone'.

It happened that fast. I haven't said my thoughts to the family because they're in shock right now. But that young early 20's medical assistant rolled a stroke patient over with a liquid feeding tube and then laid him flat on his back for the first time in 5 days. The fluid from his stomach must have come up and he breathed it in. Poor family went from sadness of the stroke, to hope, to then having to turn off life support all within 5 days.

talk to your pharmacist is you don't like your pills, they might be about to source a different brand. also applies if you get a new drug that isn't working or causes minor side effects. key ingredients can be from totally different sources. also, if doc is prescribing a high end brand name drug that you have big copay on, ask if they have samples.
My first metformin bottle tore me up and I couldn't take the full dose. Then I went to my regular doctor and he switched me to the ER (Extended Release) version. He said it worked better and didn't tear your gut up as much. It worked great for me, I take the full dose now and don't notice any more intestinal problems than I've always had. Since then I've told a few other people I know who are on metformin about the ER and switching has made it better for them.

I never thought about just trying to change brands. I thought you didn't get a choice if you were paying for generic drugs.

Dude, I remember your strongman posts from years ago. Listen to the doc about everything. Type 2 has a super shitty rate of people needing amputations; don't let that happen to you.

Source: My grandfather had his legs sliced off like sausage over the course of 20 years, up to mid thigh. And I say sausage because they explicitly told him to cut down the salt and he refused. That shit is extremely serious.

Why that mentality? Just baffles me.
“Don’t eat that arsenic, it’ll make you dead!”
“ You can’t tell me what to do….”

I have medical/dental through work, but only for generic drugs. Honestly I don't notice any difference taking it except for the side affect mentioned. Farting can be a game changer lol.

He passed before I was into my mid/late 20s, and my family was very traditional in that you don't ask questions of your elders, ever. It was one of those marriages (both Austrian, emigrated here quite literally during the height of WW2) where the woman basically just did whatever she was told. My grandfather was told in the late 70s that his diet was shit and he was overweight. Cut the salt, cut the fat (granted that was shit from back in the 70s/80s; the actual health values were kind of all over the place) and get regular exercise. His response was apparently "Lets have fried food every night and weinershnitzel three times a week" and did zero exercise and absolutely did not hydrate. He drank Coke every single day, for every meal.

First it was the toes, then it was the entire front of each foot. Then it was one foot up to the ankle; then the other. Then mid-calf. Then the other leg. Then up to the knees; they just took the knees because it was useless to have them after that. Then it was just incremental surgeries until he passed from massive cardiac arrest due to arythmia(sp) and palpitations whenever he ate... because he was eating like 3000 calories that were largely grease covered in salt.

Knowing I could have had a grandparent alive in my 30s and instead he just literally ate himself into a smaller coffin than expected makes me angry to a degree to this day.

Our AC went out thursday. Dead as a doorhammer. We had called the tech out because it was making a funny noise. He said there was nothing he could do for it and it died right after he left. My wife was the only one here and I still think he did something, but whatever. They're here replacing it this morning. We live on the gulf coast. It's been a lot of hot character building bullshit days and nights. The reason I'm putting there here is because when it died moments after the tech left, we went ahead and ordered a new one. When they couldn't get us on the schedule until tuesday, I told my wife to call them back and tell them we're elderly and might die from exposure. She wouldn't do it, so I guess maybe we're not that old.

My birthday is this coming Saturday. Wife asked me where I wanted to go for dinner. I told her Denny's cuz I can order off the 55+ menu.
Fuck I'm old.

Also I was serious.

Right before fathers day? You should tell her you want anal on your birthday and a blowie on fathers day.

Then agree to swap the order and you can feel magnanimous.
