YouTube's War on Ad Blockers

So looks like googles latest tactic is to eat up cpu resources if you have adblock installed. Does it even if you are a premium member. I would think this is opening them up to lawsuits

God damnit, seriously? I thought PoE was becoming progressively more shit that it would stutter Youtube when loading a map. That's likely still the case, but now Youtube is becoming more shit too?

Gonna watch the cpu usage more closely now. Really shouldn't have to do this much micro management.

this is while watching the same video

That would explain the CPU temperatures I'm seeing with a bunch of tabs open.

Youtube gets mad if you have adblockers installed. I had mine turned off because that taper-monkey script thingy was working and then, today, youtube started giving me shit.
Turned them back on again, get fucked youtube.

Intrusive advertising only creates animosity towards both the platform and the product being advertised, this type of advertising does not work.

Apparently the cpu thing had nothing to do with YouTube, and everything to do with Adblock updating their engine.

I've never seen this guy before, and he looks the exact opposite of an "influencer" but I actually sort of liked him. I'd rather get info from a nerd like him than a faggot like Philip DeFranco. Don't be put off by his initial impression.

[Vivaldi browser] For some reason, I got logged out of Youtube, and for the past couple days, YouTube would not allow me to log back into it, saying there was an error (wouldn't even pull up the log in window). Disabling UblockO and NoScript did not change anything.

Don't know if this is something new or just a regular old bug.

To solve it, I:
  • opened a "private" window
  • went to the YouTube log in page
  • copy/pasted that address into the regular browser
  • hit stop before it could take me to the error window (which it did, the first time I pasted the address from the private window)
  • proceeded to log in fine using saved credentials

I haven't had any issues with Brave - don't think I saw a single ad up to now.

Was trying to find a song this morning on my phone. As I searched through the different videos, I got an Ad for each one I clicked on, sometimes two. Most were 5 seconds long, unskippable, but a couple were 15 seconds long. I never stayed on any video for more than a couple seconds. Over the top annoying and in my opinion, extreme. I dont mind a commercial to help pay for a service that Im not paying for, but that many, so quickly, is just obnoxious and makes me want to omit youtube from my searches altogether.

I was using revanced on my phone for a while until I kept getting messages saying not available.

Now I have to use my brave browser on my phone to not see ads on my phone. Pain in the ass

Modern advertising has become so dystopian, and all of these companies (but especially Google) refuse to reflect on how badly they've made the experience at the expense of outdated, ineffective practices and a nonstop degradation of the platform itself from a user perspective.

Google can't complain about basic human nature to try avoiding something as grating as the kind of video ads they deliver, nor can they complain when people use third party tools to provide objectively better user experiences than what their platform offers regardless of advertising.

All the energy against adblockers would have been better spent bothering to improve Youtube itself because instead all they've done is made it worse for everyone but advertisers. It's awful as a viewer trying to find anything that could justify their advert waterboarding tactics, and numerous creators regularly come out against how Youtube handles basics like content delivery, discovery, and search.

In return, said advertisers made Google their bitch during the adpocalypse back when Youtube monopolized online video content while cable was rapidly declining, there was barely the streaming war with advertising that we have today, and prior to tiktok.

Personally, I would have loved it if they spun the situation around on advertising companies saying since that everything is targeted and to blame themselves for having such deplorable customers (i.e. the other 99% of people not perpetually on twitter and actually buy their products and services) who want to watch violence and "hate speech."

In any case, Youtube's stuck resorting to serving fake ads, scams, pornography, violence, every imaginable kind of adertisement that contradict the absurdly strict standards they force upon the content creators.

They could have gone back to full blown 90s/00s banner ads out the ass and it would still be worlds better than haphazardly shoving video ads everywhere when the very nature of their website forces people to constantly flip through videos because the service itself does such a horrible job at adequately delivering desired content in the first place.

If Google weren't completely shit, then they could at least just autoplay muted ads nonstop in a separate picture-in-picture window on desktop or under the main video on mobile like how Fextralife does to pump their streaming numbers. Nobody's paying attention to ads or buying because of them either way, no matter how much dipshit ad companies wish that were so.

Have you tried updating Revanced recently?

I was having errors not too long ago, but they changed how it works now where it uses their own MicroG alternative called GmsCore:

Advertising is also heavily to blame for the polarization that has developed in the last 10-15 years because everything became "engagement" driven, which is just marketing speak for rewarding whatever content gets the most eyeballs on those ads. It's a race to the bottom because it rewards the best clickbait content and not that which is accurate, balanced or even relevant to the user. Ragebait is one of the most effective ways of doing so, which explains why we are where we are now.

Revelant 6 minute video from 9 years ago. Problem was apparent back then and things only got worse since then.

Absolutely! It was readily apparent back in the 2000s/2010s when mainstream news outlets began shifting towards trying to be the first on any given story, resulting in misreporting and laughably bad takes by supposed journalists that even Jon Stewart was roasting CNN on the Daily Show.

Things have regressed so badly that you are either being sold something to buy or something to believe by disingenuous actors. The biggest shift has only been the medium where even the mainstream media has spun off to the most pathetic means of delivery like twitter and youtube, while often being unable to restrain themselves from behaving like their real off-screen, drama-craving, narcissistic selves.

It's that blurring of the lines between "news" and entertainment that have really helped to discredit them even further (as if that were possible), but that's also how we've seen the true danger of already corrupted mainstream media outlets invading the tech space of media delivery. At least on cable/satellite, they were somewhat contained, but they have led to frightening trends towards censorship and direct government manipulation of third parties to facilitate their narratives as a means to skirt the first amendment.

Frankly, the more you think about it, the more that the idea of supporting Youtube through watching ads or subscriptions feels immoral, contrary to however they try to spin it.
