Sorry maybe optimized isn't the best word

It favors high cpu frequency, so if you have an older Intel with more cores but lower frequency it will still run like shit.

Hmmm, that seems oddly specific. Wouldn't you need to drop down into Assembly to bypass compiler optimizations and get that kind of behavior?

I find it hard to knock Destiny too hard. There are real complaints about the story being stripped, the DLC being small and far apart. And there is NO story.

But the gameplay was great, the raids were a very good time, Iron Banner and PVP was fun and I put in over 500 hours on the game at least.

The division was broken from day one and was a major let down. Its 6 months later and what was supposed to be a classic game is still broken. Somehow Destiny made doing the same mission over and over more fun. Was shit wall to wall.

My answer though, Hellgate London.

In the build up it was going to be a mix of MMORPGs, Diablo, and FPS. The setting looked to be amazing and I was so fucking jazzed for it to release.

And then it came out, and it was like someone held me down and shit in my mouth.

Me and my buddies on the ship were jazzed for it to play LAN multiplayer, and the shit launched without the feature, or it was broken, I cant remember.

Oh god, Hellgate London is quite possibly the single worst release in the history of the industry. Not only did they ship an unfinished game, which the CEO flat out admitted to later on, but there was so much hype surrounding Flagship Studios because the core was a group of Blizzard North employees, i.e. the folks responsible for Diablo. Then on top of the game being a barely playable pile of shit at release, there was also the issue of some subscribers being billed the monthly fee over and over again.

I forgot about that.

I cant believe they slapped a monthly fee on that! it was like 30 hours of content.

And the random generated Diablo Style Dungeons? Same fucking subway tunnel over and over!

Dead Space 3
I am not a horror movie/game enthusiast, but Dead Space 1 completely enthralled me. It was the perfect mix of Alien + paranormal. Dead Space 2 was a slight step way from the original, and then 3 was a jump off a fucking cliff. They sold out to appeal to the mouth breathing, drool on yourself, lowest common denominator. They completely betrayed what their series was all about. 3 felt more like the latest Sci-fi Call of Duty than it did the roots of the Dead Space series. What they did to the franchise is unforgivable.

Civ 5- Vanilla
Some sequels are one step forward, two steps back. Civ 5 was one step back, 3 more steps back. It took two expansions over the course of 3 years just to have a product that mildly resembled Civ 4. Aren't sequels supposed to bring more to the table than their predecessors? Not fuck it all up beyond recognition? Civ 5 was so shallow at launch, I played one, maybe two games before it went on the shelf and waited for the expansions.

FF7
In HS I got FF1 and fortunately got the flu so I got to stay home all week. I beat it that week and as bad as the flu sucks, and I actually was sick, I LOVED that game. Beat it multiple times with multiple different crews.

FF2 I loved also. I traded about 20 NES games for FF2 before I even had a fucking Super Nintendo I wanted to play FF2 so bad... I loved FF2 also. I played it though at least twice all the way through and I used to beat the ending every day when I finally finished it for quite a while just bc it was fun!
FF3 was good.
FF5 was long as FUCK but I did beat it and I liked the game, little too long though.

So I heard great things about FF7 and I was like this has to be awesome of it's on the PC. I hated it. It was dark. It was brooding. I walked around what felt like a shithole of a city for the longest time doing no fighting, just talking to stupid npcs getting me nowhere, watching hookers get beat up, it was fucking horrid. I'm no prude, but I LOVED how upbeat by comparison every other FF game was. I hated the drudgery of FF7. I quit playing it after about a week and I've never played another FF7 game again despite my love for that franchise.

I actually had mixed feelings about Vanguard. Leveling was just stupid hard at 30 which sucked. Being able to solo was nice and I liked the idea of a diplomacy system but it got ganked in one of the beta updates. Combat was pretty good in the game but some things still felt off. It's hard for any MMORPG to do well in my eyes because of my 10+ years of playing EQ and how rich that world was over the years with great, great people. I'd still go back to year 1 of EQ if I could replicate that era. If there is a heaven, EQ will most definitely be part of it for me.

Nothing says upbeat like a homicidal maniac poisoning an entire town's water supply killing everyone you know and then watching your loved ones depart on a ghost train. Not long before said homicidal maniac throws the entire world into ruin in a quest for more power.

I don't think Stellaris was intended to have combat similar to EU4.
It literally boils down to: who has a higher numbered fleet? Okay you win the war because they will be wiped out in one battle and won't be able to rebuild a new one.

Reading the thread I got one suddenly! I really enjoyed Eric Chahi's Another World aka Out of this World aka Outer World. It was a landmark in cinematic storytelling in an action/puzzle game. Needless to say me and many others expected much from his next game, Heart of Darkness, but it was craptacular shit. Like the guy did not understand a single thing of what made his previous game great. The pinnacle of the lameness in that game was reached when, near the end of the game the hero meets the antagonist for the first time. The antagonist is just shooting fireball at the hero from the background and zero narration happens before or during this crucial confrontation. The WTF level is just off the charts.

The sad part is that Chahi, since Another World in 1991, did only 2 games in 25 year: The lame Heart of Darkness and a somewhat well received god game called From Dust in 2011. The saddest part though is that basically none of the groundbreaking tricks used to blend gameplay and cinematic narration in Another World have been reused by anyone in these 25 years. That's one big disappointment right there.

Tabula Rasa

The game promised so much, and was actually quite good for about a week, then it became apparent that the choices in quests you made didn't matter, and the game play was super repetitive.

Star Trek Online

I told my girlfriend at the time, that if she suddenly didn't hear from me for a few months, it was probably because this game I had been waiting for so long to come out finally did. STO was released, and unfortunately did nothing to ruin our relationship. She was a real bitch.

Ha I forgot about Tabula Rasa, holy shit did they over promise and under deliver on par with horizons. That is the game that tainted lord british forever.

There was a string of "Will this be the WoW killer?" for a good few years there.

Age of Conan and Warhammer were the biggies that I remember.

Everyone now realizes that nothing can kill WoW except WoW itself.

Street Fighter x Tekken
DLC = Disc Locked Content. Shitty net code. Just about everything having to do with this game sucked. How did they fuck it up? Day 1 purchase that I instantly regretted. Probably haven't bought a Capcom game at launch since. Tekken x Street Fighter TBD - forever?

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
Game didn't know what to do with itself. "Present time" settings and you spend 90% of it inside of your own mind. Puzzles were disjointed, kinda dumb. Last boss was a letdown, everything was for the most part a letdown. RIP Castlevania franchise?

Going through my libraries on various digital services (Steam, BNet, Origin) the biggest initial disappointment was Diablo 3. I was deployed at the time so the online only and connection issues left me very very pissed off, however it has grown to be a great game. Others:

GTA IV: Could not stand the driving physics and wasn't a big fan of the main characters. GTA V rectified both problems flawlessly.
BioShock 2: It's impossible to live up to the original but the game was still disappointing in its own ways.
Mass Effect 3 (ending only): Enjoyed the hell out of the game other than the ending. BioWare did an excellent job of improving the gameplay from 1>2>3. ME3 is still one of my favorite shooters and one of the very few 3rd person thigh high cover shooters I can actually stand.
Doom 3: Doom 2016 is what this game should have been gameplay wise. Such a dumb fucking mechanic to have to download a "duct tape mod" to make the game tolerable.
SimCity: Same fucking mistake Blizzard made with Diablo 3, online only and massive connection issues at launch. Combine that with the super small city sizes and consumable resources and it was just a piece of shit.
