You could go full WoW artifacts and have special gems drop that can be slotted into them each expansion that give them increasing wacky effects.

Well yeah, I just meant like, customizable stuff on the outside. "Neighborhoods" in EQ2 were just shared doors to your house. I would argue it's a better system than XIV's, as you would actually meet other people outside. All the house districts I visit in XIV are 100% dead.
