I played online, and when that became less of an option in Utah due to the federal government I decided to go to college instead of moving to Vegas like several of my friends did.

Good luck... I followed the blog of a guy who traded in his job at Oracle for a pro poker career. He eventually gave up because he said it changed him as a person having to deal with the absolute worst humanity has to offer every day all day. He played first in the Bay area and then at the Commerce. I dont know if your experience will be the same as his

Dude I was talking about earlier also started online. He was one of those pro StarCraft players turned pro poker player. His roommate when he lived in Korea was Bertrand Grospellier (ElkY). Pretty sure all of those roommates/StarCraft teammates became pro poker players and moved back to the States or split time between the two countries. Think ElkY moved back to France though.

Sebudai Sebudai Go have a Capistrami from Capriotti's for me please. I miss Vegas, will likely be moving back there when the kids are grown up.

When I lived there I considered attempting the path of becoming a pro, I even took a whole month off of work to play and did very well. BUT the degenerates you see around you are a great blue print of what could be so I never followed through, I had too much to lose with an awesome wife etc.

I've played lots and lots of poker in casinos (probably more than online) and I love it a lot. Which is why I'd never make it a job. The one thing I do want to do one day is get into the Main Event and see how far I could go. I came real close in a 75 dollar satellite for a seat in the main event one year and always wanted to give it another go. I think you can even win seats online now. My dad lives in Vegas, so I always have free room and board.

You'd never make it your job because you love it? I do not understand that line of thinking.

when something switches from being a hobby to being something you're forced to do to continue your own livelihood, the fun can get sucked out.

Friend that used to be a game dev.. Now she does pro poker-- she is female and good looking lol so I am sure that has helped, but she is also very smart and driven to do things-

Get into the blogs and streaming set of the culture as that's "kinda" new and still has some flexibility for new talent to get in as some old timers won't move to that platform. She advocates... sharemypair? I don't really know details except she's been doing it for a few years and is not on the streets so...doing okay?

So- it can be done :)

Edited to remove ultra identifiable specifics about her story

I would drop everything and become a guitar player if the opportunity arose. Unfortunately in the music world you need to dedicate years of being poor as fuck and you still might not find even a decently comfortable living doing that. Of all my college roommates I'm the only one that didn't chase the music dream and got an office gig. Only one of said musicians is making a good living. This is after almost 10 years of dedicating themselves to it. You really need to move to LA, NYC, or Nashville to make it work unless you find yourself in a band that calls a certain city home and makes it big.

My dad did this as a hobby and now does it full time since he retired. And he was able to retire at 52 because the income he makes from that is considerable. I'm jealous because there's no way I'll be able to do that. Dude just has a knack for seeing old junk and knowing it's worth money.

ive been going to garage sales and finding interesting old stuff since i was a little kid. never sold anything though, but sites like Ebay and Etsy has me really interested in seeing if i could make a go of it. its certainly something i love doing and i'm really good at finding the old stuff. just not sure on the politics with chargebacks and feedback on items because your reputation is held hostage by the douchebags you sell to and if they want they could shit on your score just because they no longer wanted the item they bought at 3am while drunk sitting on the shitter.

I think you need to find a niche in which you're knowledgeable. My dad focuses on sports memorabilia and older country music memorabilia. His collection is fucking awesome. He's got shit in the baseball and football Hall of Fames on display. Going to my dad's house is like going to a museum. He even bought a second place and it's all decorated with vintage beer, music, and sports collectibles too.

Wow yeah... editing my post as not to not blatantly "out" her- plz do the same... didn't know she also had such keywords publicly out there lol

However: on topic of career path change- she is smart, good and very driven- so her success is self derived and deserved. She has taken to many streaming and other specific things that she's used to self promote.

So - it can be done, God speed to you as you make such changes and go for it.

To give a little more background, I had been working for USPS (computers, not delivering). The hours had become very inconsistent and promotion to a higher GS level was getting further away rather than closer due to recent software improvements (computers takin' my job). Since promotion to a higher GS level was the main reason I had even been keeping the job, I resigned. Then I packed up a few things and headed down. Planning to move the rest of my shit over the next few months.

I'm currently staying with a very good friend of mine who is also staking me at no charge until I get up and running, so that mitigates a lot of the risk for me. He's starting me off playing PLO. My friends have been extremely successful for over a decade (when I last played) and they don't do the degenerate gambling thing. They've been trying to get me to move down and play again for a long time.

I have known many people from USPS, it's very "old government" in terms of knowing the know for promotions.. But if you were there long enough to get a pension, your good ;) go enjoy have fun. I wish my pension was like USPS haha.

Not having any mobility, let along upward is a killer of good employees and the biggest risk companies have right now in this good economy.

Well I meant it more in the sense that it's a fun hobby but not something I would be in the position to do or even desire to do as my soul source of income.

I'm way too risk averse regarding my family anyway. If I were single with no kids it might be a different story but the fact is that the life of a professional gambler is going to have some pretty big ups and downs monetarily unless of course you play it safe and grind it out night after night until you make your bill money - at which point I could see the fun (for me personally) declining rather quickly.

You wanna get rich in Vegas? Start a HVAC business, when air conditioning goes out at 3AM people call your ass and pay any price to get that shit fixed ASAP, youll pull down money that would make a union plumber cry.
