Yeah, it's just a question of which set of motivations ends up winning out. However, I think they'll burn the phones up as long as they can before "settling" for the Mariners.

There aren't many less attractive free agent destinations right now.

As far as Cano goes, he's either going to sign for less years with the Yankees or go somewhere because I don't think they are going to cave on that one. Not with still having to deal with the A-Rod contract (no matter what happens to him), signing Ellsbury and McCann, plus the other contracts they still have (CC, Tex). The article I recently read gave a good layout on how the negotiations are going. Cano is saying he worth 10 years as a player and as a brand to the Yankees. Yankees counter saying last year, on a team where he was the sole face (Jeter and others hurt) and attendance went down (meaning he didn't put more fannies in the seats).

Mujica became extremely hittable/unreliable spanning from September all the way through WS. I wouldn't get all giddy about him just yet.
Relievers are tricky to begin with. Wild fluctuation from year to year is common with these guys. What I like is he's a strike thrower. Also willing to bet he ran out of gas at the end of the year. He was dominant pretty much all year till September hit, which probably cost him a few million.

No doubt. I drafted him as Mr. Irrelevant in my 12 man league this past season, and I rode that horse until it died.

Cano and Jay-Z are morons. They just rejected one of the biggest contracts in MLB history and no longer have any leverage with the Yankees.

You cannot and I mean absolutely cannot pay guys during age 35-40 like you did 10 years ago. I would even go as far as say post 30 years old now. The testing hasn't cleaned up the game entirely but the days of Luis Gonzalez and Steve Finley having career years in their mid 30s just dont happen anymore. The Yankees made the right choice.

And yet they just gave an oft-injured 30 year old a 7 year contract.

When the fuck are these teams going to stop giving these players these fucking insane contracts? 6 years is too much let alone 10 for crying out loud. Cano is 31 years old from the DR, so all we know he's fucking 34.
