I imagine their "no-box" tech will work about as well as DBG's  .
I guess there are ways to probably get around most detection tech but how would they not constantly get reported if they were shitting up multi day respawn boss kills. A halfway decent moderation effort should take care of it?

The amount of money people are willing to spend on it defies my comprehension. Then I remember back to a guy I knew that worked in the MMO industry telling me that the whales that visited the office usually looked like none of them could actually afford what they were spending. I pictured a plethora of Azmongolds touring the offices, except none of them had a streamer job to fund it.

I mean, the same happens on TLPs and yet the box armies persist. And despite how small DBGs team is, this team is even smaller. 0 chance people don't get around it.

This game will be a retirement home for people who peaked at level 60 in 2001. I can't imagine it lasts more than 1-2 months before people realize there just isn't a market for EQ Redux in 2025.

You've had some good points in this thread but let us not forget you smash gear together for a 2% chance upgrade. I think you're living proof there is a market for everyone.

Right, because nothing screams "thriving MMO" like catering to a mix of contrarian shut-ins and dudes waiting for their next disability check to clear.

Not launching on Steam is a gift for them. It means they can spin whatever narrative they want about "strong player numbers" without anyone being able to verify it. No concurrent player graphs, no retention stats, no SteamCharts to point at when the population inevitably nosedives. Just vibes, anecdotes, and nostalgia doing the heavy lifting. When your playerbase starts collapsing, you just say it’s "tight-knit" now. Problem solved.

Not sure if this is just edgy banter, or if you honestly don't think there is enough of a population of people who still play EQ. There are over 50K people still playing EQ in either live or some variation of it in total at any given time. There is a crowd for this type of game, whatever it is you want to call it. EQ is a product of it's time, but it is enough of an escape still from the trash tier zoomer korean MMOs and gacha game AI slop which dominates the current market. Western MMOs are a dying breed, what there are 2, maybe, Western MMOs still going strong? Shit on the EQ clone games all you want, if a company actually manages to stay afloat and get a chunk of that playerbase it will be a success. I would not bet money on it happening, to many things going against it, but the reason for failure is not because the company is trying to stay true to EQ era forced downtime mechanics.

Ya i dunno man maybe I just think of it differently. Sounds like a good amount but I'm not willing to refer to every POI and MOB camp as a piece of content I missed. Thanks for the answer though. Definitely clarifies things.
It is what it is. Ultimately things happen slowly in a game like , this so an area that may be considered small in a game like wow can take me a week to fully explore in this game , from a combination of just slow gameplay and caution due to the severe penalty from dying. I definitely don’t think it’s for most people. But to put it succinctly this has about 50x the content of pantheon just to give that perspective

I'm coming into this game after playing Lost Ark for 3 years. Lost Ark is significantly harder than just about any MMORPG out there. I like the change of pace. Your obsession with mmorpg difficulty is frankly bizarre considering most people who play games aren't good at them and aren't looking to have their dicks smashed in by their lack of mechanical skill, and the fact that you never got anywhere in Lost Ark and resorted to playing the easiest class in the game, but I digress. :emoji_smirk:

The thing about boxing is that I don't see why anyone would try to skirt the rules and play multiple boxes on a no box server when there will be boxing server options. Why risk getting banned when you're allowed to be a complete degen on the server with rules that allow it?

I try and stay out of this thread but man there is so much delusion going around today. I mainly only shit on this game for refusing to launch on steam, the surest sign its some vaporware scam. Even pantheon launched on Steam.

you guys vastly underestimate the number of nirgons and I guess, me type of gamers are out there. Between the contrarian incels and semi retired boomers I’d easily bet this gets 15k subs by end of year 1, at a minimum. And I would also bet the number grows during that year.

the most offensive thing you could do to nick is compare this game to pantheon. That garbage only had the numbers it did due to Brad and also being in the mmo news cycle for decade+ and cuz steam.
This is wrong from both ends. The Pantheon that brad envisioned is closer in time and even implementation with the Fuzzy troll era than the current version of Pantheon, There is almost no connection whatsoever with the game we have and the game brad's kickstarter failed to create. Any and all tenuous connection to brad died when the kickstarter failed, and all lingering connection died around the same time brad did. There is zero good will or positive word of mouth related to brad mcquaid and Pantheon of today. The game we have didn't even begin to be more than just ideas on napkins until a few years ago with some purchased pre-made assets.

All that to say, Pantheon's "success" (lol) owes absolutely nothing to Brad and everything to launching on Steam, something that MNM refuses to do, which is why they'll never get anywhere close to 15k. If they can pull 5k *accounts (how many are bank alts/boxed? maybe 2-3k actual people) when its a free test they can expect 10% of those players to show up when they charge a monthly fee. i concur that comparing this to Pantheon is wrong, because it won't get anywhere near Pantheon's numbers without launching on steam. You should be comparing this with Ember's Adrift, it's practically the same game and will have the same success.

It's somewhat of a Catch 22. they'll launch this from their garage and can then claim any numbers they want so there's no way to verify the outcome of the bet, other than if it fails completely and shuts down within a year, though since it's just a hobby project they'd prolly leave it up even with 0 players. If they launched on steam where we could track the numbers then we could verify the bet, but then they would hit their numbers (at least initially) because they launched on steam.

There are over 5K people still playing EQ in either live or some variation of it in total, but not at any given time.

Yup. Closest you will ever get is what EQ tried, and even that falls apart when you just start using VMs or NUC/mini style boxes. Family friendly games can't block IPs if they want to have actual families playing together.

Blocking IPs doesn’t work either.

The multiple-account phenomenon is almost certainly accounted for in their business model. They know who their customers are, and they know some of these guys are gonna drop $90 a month to run their own group.

If there's 250 of them (and there definitely are), that's a cool $22,500/month. You're not gonna discourage that.

yeah not really sure why this particular demographic has issues with boxing? Like this is what you do.

I guess there are 2 camps when it comes to this sort of thing. The P99/TLP types who are nostalgic for early EQ like experiences and the post Velious/EQ live types who pretty much exclusively box entire groups if not entire raids.

Except even the TLP/P99 types box, at a minimum dual box, even on the alleged "truebox" servers which are super relaxed not really enforced truebox for only the first few expansions.

I mean sure there's the super naive idealist's who don't actually play TLPs who are just nostalgic for early EQ but hasn't actually played this type of game in 25 years.

I'd wager the population split will be something like 75% box server, 20% no boxing, and 5% for the nirgons who like EQ style PVP?. with a triple digit player base total, PVP server is gonna be DOA and the the no boxing server isn't really going to be able to support more than a few groups, maybe 1 guild worth of players. At launch maybe it will be 50/50 split but the "just here for nostalgia" types are gonna realize real quick their rose colored glasses about 25 year old of mechanics aren't what was fun and they'll quit within a week.

Even people who dislike boxing on principle will end up playing on the boxing server, they aren't naive enough to expect to be able to progress without other players and player pop/density is going to make it damn near impossible on the no box server. Even guys who come in with a full RL friend group, shit happens, people quit, you're going to be stuck on a dead server that, at least on paper, bans boxing.

Yeah, there's a "crowd" for EQ. There's also a crowd for rotary phones and VHS collections. It doesn't mean we should start mass-producing them again and pretend they're the future. Let's not confuse persistence with relevance. And let's not inflate that into some hidden market waiting to be "tapped." It’s the same echo chamber chasing the same high, on repeat, every two years.

And this whole "Western MMOs died because of zoomer gacha trash" narrative is just cope and fatalism, giving lazy and uninventive devs a pass. They didn't die because people stopped wanting challenge, they died because devs kept mistaking wasting time for depth. Corpse runs, hour-long commutes, XP debt, etc.? That wasn’t "risk vs reward." That was punishment disguised as design. You can slap "immersion" on it all you want, but it's still just dead air between the parts that are actually fun.

If the design goal is to capture the EQ crowd, sure, you'll probably get your 5-10k subs. But let's not pretend that means the formula works. It just means the genre never moved on, and the same small circle of players won't let it.

At some point, you have to stop mistaking "still existing" for "still relevant."

Lost Ark launched with two support classes, man. Two. So because I didn't want to prance around as a fairy-ass Bard, Paladin was literally the only viable choice. The "you picked the easy class" take is just lazy. I didn't pick it because I was scared of a challenge, I picked it because I wanted to play a support without looking like I belonged in a K-pop boy band.

And the "difficulty flex" thing? Come on. It's mechanical memorization with pretty particle effects. It's rarely about mastering systems or making smart decisions under pressure, it's about remembering when the boss does his 3rd spin before the laser sweep and praying the servers don't lag. Everybody knows it's a raid wipe simulator wrapped in RNG checks and damage uptime spreadsheets. There's a reason Amazon just deleted the AGS Irvine studio and it wasn't because Lost Ark is a smashing success and model of what difficulty in MMOs looks like.

And as for this weird projection about me being "obsessed with difficulty"? Nah, I'm obsessed with games respecting my time. There's a difference. I don't need a game to beat me over the head to feel accomplished, I need it to make my engagement feel earned. If I'm dying, I want it to be because I made a bad decision, not because I got stun-locked by clunky, outdated mechanics or had to corpse-run across three zones just to get back to playing. That's not difficulty. That's disrespect disguised as "depth."

The whole "well, not everyone wants their dick smashed in by difficulty" argument is hilarious too. Yeah, no kidding, but nobody's asking for that. What people do want is a game that doesn't treat their time like a renewable resource. I've got a life, a job, and a brain. I want meaningful challenge, not masochism dressed up as "hardcore authenticity."

As for boxing? The idea that "people won’t do it if it’s against the rules" is just adorable. People bot in retail WoW, they'll sure as hell box in M&M. The real question isn't "why would they?" but "why wouldn't they?" when the systems practically reward them for it.

Citing Lost Ark wasn't a difficulty flex, (although after reading your cope, I'm glad you misinterpreted it) it was clearly to point out that you're just plain wrong when over numerous posts here you've tried to "diss" the people who want to play it by claiming they're terrible at video games and they're just attracted to M&M because the only challenge to be found in the game is in the "tedious systems" that only "shut-ins" on "disability checks" could thrive on.

Your part about boxing doesn't really address what I said either. I already told you why they wouldn't. Because they can box to their hearts content on the boxing-allowed server and not risk a ban. I'm not saying there won't be the oddball that tries it just to see if he can get away with it, but the vast majority of boxers will go where they're allowed to be and it wouldn't make sense to do otherwise. Unless you think bot armies are going to rise up for a game that you've clearly made it well known that you think almost nobody is going to end up playing.

there seems to be mass confusion about steam here. The devs have said that they will release on steam, just not for early access.

Oh that’s good. Could’ve sworn i heard Shaun say absolutely not. Got a link? Or is it buried in some stream?

There may be confusion because he states at the 2:05 mark here that they have no plans to launch on Steam in the forseeable future, then expands on why:

Perhaps that all changed?

yeah I don't exactly follow this game, I got the "no steam ever" from you folks and this thread, and videos like the above seem to confirm it.

it's pretty much moot though, no steam for EA? But by Early Access we of course mean launch, because there is no wipe, correct?

So 500 ppl at launch, no marketing, no word of mouth beyond the same miniscule circle of players like, you know, communities like this. So no positive feedback loop or player growth.

So then what? After a year or so, they accept this as a hobby project that they work on after work and it never goes anywhere? or they cave and launch on steam, but that only works with fresh start servers, nobody is going to want to play on some pre-existing server gatekept by neckbeard nirgoncels.

So I guess the pre-steam version is just the beta server then? I'll wait til it launches for real (IE on steam) before even considering it.

There is literally no argument possible for why they would not launch on steam other than they know this is a scam and don't want to lose the ability to refuse refunds. whining about steam taking a larger distributor cut than other services is the same as refusing to cash in a winning powerball ticket "because of all the taxes you'd have to pay." it's intellectually dishonest at best, speaks to utter incompetence or retardation of the developer, or reveals their scheme is just a giant vaporware scam.

Until the 10th I believe, although I keep hearing its extended to the 12th, but not seen that officially myself.
