overrated: all lord of the rings movies. They're so long winded and drawn out. Plus even when something is happening the plot armor is so heavy it's beyond funny.

underrated: the first Saw movie. It should have stayed just one movie. Sure it's a cult classic now but it's importance to the genre is almost forgotten because of all the shitty sequels that were made, trying to turn it into a franchise. All people now think when they hear about the original that it must be as shit as the ones that came after.
I wish I could half like, half hate your comment because I 100% agree with you about everything you said about Saw, but I also want to ensure the downfall of your entire bloodline for what you said about LOTR.

But I still feel you my dude.

The best part is that the writer and director wanted to do trash tier torture porn all along but they didn't have any financial backing, so they were forced to actually make a good movie so that they could get the funding to crank out trash tier torture porn.

I agree that the first Saw movie was very good. Found it to be a very compelling "mystery" with lots of clever twists and turns.

The rest are completely unwatchable.

I'm sure I'll rustle some jimmies with these, but two I've always hated are Apocalypse Now and Tombstone.

For Apocalypse Now, I'll defend myself by saying that before I saw the movie, I was forced to read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad in school. That was the most awful book I have ever read, perhaps (outside of obvious awful shit like Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice, Twilight, etc.). And I had to know it forward and backward for the fucking Academic Decathlon. I hated it so much. And then I watched Apocalypse Now a few years later, and realized they straight up copied almost all of the major aspects of the book. I typically like war movies, even weird ones, and I always liked all the Sheens, so it is possible that I might have enjoyed the movie at least a little if I never read that book, but since I had...I'd rather have my fingernails pulled out than watch that again.

Tombstone...again, I love Kurt Russell. I loved Val Kilmer, and his scenes I would happily still rewatch thousands of times. I typically even like westerns. But there are parts of that movie that are just fucking retarded, and the part that cemented it for me (we saw it in theaters) was the shitty montage sequence of hunting down all the red bandana (or whatever it was) wearing bandits. I've only ever seen it the one time, so my memory is very hazy now, but I remember saying "What the fuck is this?" in the middle of that montage. My best friend agrees with me (he saw it at the same time). Literally every other person I've ever spoken to loves the movie. We are on an island alone on this one, it seems. A no homo island.

Tombstone is awesome, in fact I just re-watched it a few months ago.

I have no idea if this relates to your criticisms, but apparently Kurt Russell was semi directing that film and maybe the scenes you refer to are part of the general reshoots

I didn't think Logan was anything special. By the time I got to it expectations were so high they couldn't be met.
Logan actually had some some substance to it compared to every other super hero movie. Important people dying.

Of course none of it matters in the grand scheme of things because they still make movies with the characters but if there was no more Wolverine or Professor X after Logan then there would be a lot more to it.

Read that one last year and was fucking shocked at how awful it was. It's not even long and getting to the end was drudgery. No other book I've read has a larger disconnect from it's reputation and my opinion of it.

What compelled you to read Twilight?
We just talked about this somewhere recently (not that you should know, but to summarize a lengthier post), and it was basically because a) I have always wanted to be a writer, and I wanted to see what made this one rocket into the stratosphere (the answer is: women are retarded), and b) because so many women I knew were raving about it IRL and on Facebook, and I wanted to be able to shit all over it knowledgeably. Which I did, gloriously and repeatedly.

There's merit in reading The Popular Thing of Today to keep up on the outside world and the happenings in pop culture. I don't regret at all reading the first Hunger Games and first Mortal Engines books.

edit - yeah, it was easier to shit on the Hunger Games having read it. It's fine but I ran in to a few people that just fucking gushed over it like it was the most amazing thing ever.

I read the first Hunger Games book over a day and a half and thought it was ok. I started to shit on it more and more and then I realized one day that I had screamed at a dude in 6th grade that didn't like Dragonlance.

I spent a lot of time that night staring at my ceiling.

I hope that at least one of Hunger Games readers that I recommended Battle Royale to picked it up somewhere along the way.

I read all the Hunger Games books. The first one wasn't terrible. The last one was absolute horseshit.

I've read a ton of crappy YA shit, like Divergent (again, first one was tolerable, later were unmitigated disasters). I tried to read Mortal Engines, actually, and gave up. I want to say I might have read the first Maze Runner, but that might be a fever dream just from watching the movie. I'm sure there are others I can't remember.

Maybe I'm just out of touch now, but it seems like YA crap is on the wane. Let's hope that continues.
