1. There better be gingerbread cookie monsters in the expansion.

2. What the Fuck was that trailer?? It was nice quality but I was seriously expecting Shrek to come over and eat the cookie.
I mean, Garruk has always been green aligned as a planeswalker...?

It was definitely a different take than I was expecting for a trailer, but the animation was well done.

Negative.

Corrupted by Lillianna/The Veil, so he is B/G now.

He was not in War of the Spark 'because' Nicol Bolas felt he would be too dangerous and might kill other Planeswalkers before they could do what Bolas had set them up to do.

In the 'current' lore, he was... uh ...brainwashed into being the pet/guard of Oko (the new suuuuper fabulous Fairy Planeswalker), and was renamed 'Dog' for a time.

The 82nd Magic: The Gathering expansion set, “Throne of Eldraine” will be released on October 4, 2019. Themed around Grimm’s Fairy Tales and the Arthurian legend of Camelot, this set will introduce players to a new fantasy world and its denizens.

On Wednesday, for the first time, we get to meet one of the planeswalkers who is spending time in Eldraine. The illustrious Oko is a Fey shapeshifter who is as charismatic as he is conceited, a man who is mysterious, clever, and vain.

Oko’s story will be revealed in detail in the first “Throne of Eldraine” ebook, Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest. But today, we’re getting a sneak preview of his life and personality.

In order to get to know Oko a little better (and to figure out where he belongs on my planeswalker dateability chart), I interviewed Nic Kelman, Head of Story and Entertainment at Wizards of the Coast, who is one of the writers responsible for bringing his character to life.

Here is a Q&A to help you get to know the enigmatic Oko:

Lauren Orsini: Oko got his spark when his captors tried to suppress his shapeshifting. Can you tell me more about that? What did it feel like for Oko?

Nic Kelman: Oko is from a plane ruled by Fey who believe in a unified society, one where the ruling class has decided that for the betterment of all, the natural mischievousness of the Fey has to be suppressed. To the ruling class, they had created a perfect society—but for Oko, who was born with incredibly powerful shapeshifting abilities, this culture went against everything he was and contradicted his deepest, truest self.

Styling himself as a speaker of truth, Oko felt he held a mirror to the hypocrisy of his world. The ruling class did not quite see it this way. They subjected him to magical procedures intended to suppress his powers but only succeed in igniting his spark. We can imagine this was a terrible experience for him and one that would make it almost impossible for him to trust anyone again—especially those in positions of authority.

Orsini: Speaking of shapeshifting, what’s the most interesting shapeshift he’s done? (Alternate question: any good shapeshifting pranks he’s pulled?)

Kelman: Oko seeks out hypocrisy wherever he finds it…but by his own definition which often leads to quite cruel “pranks.” Ruining a wedding day, stealing the spotlight at someone’s lifetime moment of triumph, fooling a mother into believing her child has returned from a conflict – these are all great shapeshifting jokes to Oko who sees nothing as sacred, least of all the most noble of emotions.

Orsini: Additionally, can he shapeshift as other people? Like, other Planeswalkers?

Kelman: He absolutely can!

Orsini: Which Planeswalker does he get along with best?

Kelman: He generally tries to avoid revealing himself to other Planeswalkers, but I can imagine he would get along well with Chandra if he didn’t have such a mean streak.

Orsini: In Oko’s opinion, what’s the best part about being a Planeswalker?

Kelman: Never having to deal with the consequences of your actions if you don’t want to!

Orsini: What’s the worst part?

Kelman: To Oko, it would be feeling alone in the Multiverse. (He has yet to learn it doesn’t have to be this way – see his trust issues above).

Orsini: What do you think has been the biggest challenge in Oko’s life so far? How did he, or how is he working to, overcome it?

Kelman: I think probably the issues he faced on his Homeplane. They have shaped his life to this point and it will probably be some time before he finds the courage to trust anyone enough to grow beyond those experiences… if ever.

Want to learn more about Oko? More will be revealed in the first “Throne of Eldraine” ebook, Throne of Eldraine: The Wildered Quest by Kate Elliot, available for preorder now.
I blame all these fucking nerd girls who love BTS, MCU Loki and gay vampires.

I could handle Clue and Treasure tokens, but *FOOD* tokens? higher cost and only gives lifegain? Meh.

It's not all trash though, this seems pretty hot:

"The Specter and the Thief of the Night" {U/B}{U/B}{U/B}{U/B}
Sorcery

Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a nonland card in that player’s hand or graveyard and exile it. You may cast that card for as long as it remains exiled, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast that spell.

So I'm thinking some sort of Control deck that relies on these new Adventure creatures could be really powerful... Maybe Sultai so you can jam the powerful green Food cards in too...

Adventure cards are sneakily powerful, a card like this:

When you name enough Adventure cards in your deck, it suddenly doesn't read as "Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand" but rather "return target spell from your graveyard to your hand."

Are the only two real candidates for the idea so far. There are some other decent Adventure cards spoiled so far but just decent at best:

As you can see, Green has the highest concentration of Adventure cards. This card:

Becomes very interesting with Adventure cards, since all those Adventure spells count as permanents since they're attached to creatures... Between this enchantment and the existence of 3-mana Oko and new Garruk:

Has me really thinking some sort of Sultai mid-range/control hybrid thing could end up being great. Control when you need the Adventure spells, mid-range when you need the creatures? Adventure just seems so versatile I can't help but feel like it's gonna end up broken somehow... Even just one or two more powerful Adventure cards might be enough to get it going, hopefully they spoil some sweet ones.

Jamming a ton of Adventure cards has the potential to be really powerful even just as a source of card advantage. They're not like Instant/Sorcery split cards where it's one or the other and then the graveyard. Each one is literally like having two cards in your hand for the price of one. That alone is huge even if you don't jam any other ways to take advantage of it.

I’m torn between really liking the adventure mechanic and really hating the flavor of this set.
Some of the fairy tale stuff has me wanting to go back to my old school mono black deck like a grognard.

now all those 2-for-1 Adventure cards i was gushing about can be even a bit better? dies to doomblade for sure, but at least it only costs 1? he'll be a lightning rod for removal, and then you can maybe just get him back easily anyway with the gravedigger Adventure critter? real grindy potential GB deck shaping up i think. i was probably daydreaming too much when i was thinking of Sultai, mana base probably isn't good enough for it (tho green does have Golden Goose to help with mana...), but even if i do go three colors now maybe GBW or GBR is better than GBU...

So far the only Adventure cards that will see constructed play are

The 3 mana Kill spell Rare
The 1 Green add 1 Mana spell (maybe)
The 1 Red discard a card draw a card.

The rest are draft chaft (so far)

Yeah really needs to be at least 1-2 more good ones for it to become a deck, it's close tho with still a decent chunk of the set left to spoil

Adventurer is a draft mechanic I don't think they want most of these to be constructed playable.

Adament Is the constructed mechanic I think.

Alls I know is is I'm slamming Fervent Champion in some kind of mardu Stoneforge deck. The allure of casting 4 Manamorphose out of your deck with Sunforger activations on that dude is just too strong.
