Welp, looks like I'm rocking this machine for the next 398 years. Thanks for the tip, bro.

He copied my build!!! I got 2x32GB DIMMs to soft future proof a bit, but I also do a lot of weird shit.
In my defense, I credited you in the Desktop Computers thread where I first posted it!

I blatantly took most of your build because it was pretty in-line with what I wanted, and like you I felt it was worth a couple hundred bucks more to make sure I would be good for maybe another 10 years. Thank you for doing most of the work for me, it has been 6 years (my current computer) since I last really looked at this shit!

I've been wanting/needing to upgrade my machine for the past couple weeks and have put it off because the end of this month is typically bonus time (end of our fiscal year) so I wanted to see how much I had to play with, but it has been steadily getting worse, and last night my computer basically shit itself so I can't wait anymore. I ordered pretty much everything as it was off of that list, except for the gpu which I had already grabbed for much less. I appreciate your advice and efforts, and please don't think I'm just ignoring your suggestions, but I don't really have time to wait for someone to build it and ship it, as opposed to everything should be here this weekend, Monday at the latest when they inevitably get shit mixed up. I'm fine with building my own, even if I won't be taking pics of it to post for fear of everyone shitting on my cable management, but it will do everything I need it to do so that's good enough.

Thank you for your efforts though, I do appreciate them.

No worries bud you are going to love it.

I have been console gaming and mild PC gaming so long, I forgot how easy it is if you have a good rig to just blast all the settings on legacy games and they look brand new.

Spun up dying light 1 - on Series X and PS5 it looks medicore now. On the PC at 4k max OLED 32" at 144 FPS holy shit. The console "Need to wait on a patch that will never come for a "Next gen" patch, fuck those people and their subscriptions. What the hell was I thinking? PC no need to hope for a patch to take advantage of new hardware which is already antiquated by the time it launches anyway, no subscriptions for online play or voice chat - man was I a sucker.

Y’all be spending all this money on unnecessary RAM when what you really need is a 2050W PSU.

Ah just joking anyways. I usually obsess over components but this time just kind of read a few reviews and took what I thought might be the best. Hope for both of us turns out good

Need 240v plug to get full wattage. I wonder how many have that in the US near their computer? I don't and have 240v outlets in several places. None near my computer. Maybe when google gets their nuke plants up and running they will get into minaturization for it.

I was gonna install a 240v line to my office at some point in the next few years. I figure with nvidia's focus video card girth, its only a matter of time.

The datacenter variants hit 1000w TDP already. Don't think we'll get that high in consumer level stuff because it's hard to cool that sort of thing at acceptable noise levels. Server fans run at jet engine speeds and hearing damage is a real risk in data centers.

Here's 8 of them in a box, costs $300k but it can probably run Crysis

Yeah I work on servers, the power draw without GPUs is already super high (2x1500W PSUs are common), but when GPUs are added we have to really amp it up (heh)

Crazy is my amateur radio can send a signal literally to the other side of the world if the signal propagation is right and works off a 120v outlet. Of course you can really use a lot more power with an amp to make sure the propagation is right but still crazy compared to a desktop computer considering a lot of transievers now are basically a computer as well with software defined radio.

Times change, the household nuke plant is a joke but we're heading in that direction.

I've not been keeping up on the 5 series but I'm seeing 5090s popping up in stock for more than 7 seconds at places, so of course the upgrade bug is being a bit of an asshole. I game at 4K with a 4090, and the only reason I'm even mildly considering the upgrade is that I can sell my card used for more than I bought it for and net out to roughly $1000 out of pocket for a 5090. Of course that's not exactly chump change, and while the 5090 benches appreciably better at 4K I wouldn't call it a dramatic difference. I'm also not thrilled with the higher power draw both at idle and under load and that the card could possibly bang up against the limits of my 1000w power supply. Waiting for the 6 series is the correct answer, yes? (assuming tariffs haven't turbo-fucked things even further by then)
Well that escalated quickly.

With 5090s slowly working their way into stock I ran into an open box MSI Gaming Trio that allegedly contained an unused card at a "good" (lol) price - think mild ass molestation versus a 10 black guy gang rape. I picked it up, and the card was indeed virgin as it was still covered in the factory adhesive plastic. I applied a 1000Hz memory/350Hz core boost and ran it through some benchmarks at factory voltage just to ensure that it was stable. It passed without any issues.

At 4K it just tears through everything. Cyberpunk looks and runs amazingly well. Compared to the 4090 I'm getting a solid 35%+ boost to average FPS and a significant improvement to 1% lows. Even with path tracing on things remain impressively stable and smooth. With Oblivion Remaster, I would dip down to 80FPS in the most demanding outdoor locations with the 4090. The same areas are at 115-130FPS now. The card also runs cooler (~68C max under load) and the fans are much quieter. It does slurp up the power, though, but I haven't tried undervolting yet.

So...should anyone else get one? At scalper pricing, fuck no. At MSRP (if it ever actually gets there) the jump over the 4090 at high res certainly seems worth it to me, especially if you can unload a 4 series card at the currently inflated prices they're fetching used. Of course once the 5090s are in stock everywhere demand for the 4 series will drop, that's mainly how I justified the buy now at the open box price.

EDIT: Tried a quick undervolt with a slight core (curve) and memory OC. In a demanding area in Cyberpunk, max power draw dropped from 570W (yikes) to 450W, and max temps dropped a bit from 68C to 64C, all with FPS actually climbing slightly from stock (though probably not enough to really notice). Sweet.

When I built this PC in Feb of 24 I had 32GB. Noticed I was running out of physical memory when stacking images for my space photos so I went to 64GB. Initially I just added another 32GB in the 4 open slots and could not get the board to post. Then did 32x2 (same brand same models just double the ram) and have not had issue one. Boards are finicky as fuck now.

The 2 sticks vs 4 sticks has to do with the memory topology of the mobo. I remember when I did my 5800X build, there was a google doc going around with all the available mobos and what topologies. Daisy chain is cheaper to make and and by far the most common. It performs best with 2 sticks, while t-topology does better with 4 sticks.

The difference is because the traces from the slot to the memory controller are different lengths in daisy chain and all the same in t-topology. With daisy chain you want to use the 2 slots with the shorter traces.

More ram sticks also means you have more chances to get a defective stick and especially one that doesn't tune as well.

Lots of ram can mean more time to post and verify stability, so there are reasons to not buy an excessive amount that may never be used.

yea ddr is really annoying, remember when we could mismatch ram and just in whatever we wanted?

remember when abit was king of motherboards and had 3 ram slots?

also, wth is this be6, 442$
