I thought the book was OK, and I feel like I was the demographic for it :p interested to see how they adapt it into the movie. As much room as the random 80s trivia filler took up, there was a ton of other stuff going on too that seemed important and seems like there's no way 1 movie will fit it all in. Also looks like they changed the girl for some reason.

Lol bunch of new references in that trailer. As someone said, Tracer, next to her was Chun-Li. also saw a Chucky doll of all things/people punching someone.

The book was trash. Nostalgia porn with the most see-through plot. No idea why it got so much hype in our circles.

A friend was trying to get me to read it for a while. Ended up compromising and getting the Wil Wheaton audiobook. Wil getting into character made the experience even more annoying. I mean, the second half of the book was just a massive cringefest.

Don't see how the movie is going to be any good.

Sorry for the salt, bros! But fuck...

Book was a pretty good page-turner, I thought. Obviously wasn't going for a noble prize in literature (or pretending to). It always was the written equivalent of popcorn blockbuster movies with easy underdog-good-guy vs. evil bad guys + heaps of nostalgia-bait for the older generation of nerds (pretty much the recipe for present-day Star Wars movies actually).

Book was basically designed to hook 30ish white male RPG/Computer-Game/Sci-Fi&Fantasy-guys the same way sparkly-vampire books were made to hook teenage girls, and it did just that.

Hell, it even had one or two Everquest references (thought I doubt those make it into the movie).

I thought the book started off really well but the last third was kind of a let down. Trailers look great so far, I'd watch it just for the nostalgia references.

Surprising, being that this is a movie (book) about the 80's, and EverQuest didn't come out until March 16th, 1999. (I swore it was March 14th... guess not).

They reference it when talking about the building of the MMO etc. It isn't part of the plot in a measurable way.

The book isn't at all about the 80's but more pulls a lot of pop culture references weighted towards the 80's since that was the era that the Oasis creator grew up in. Still, the book had references on through the 00's. Pretty sure the Matrix was even mentioned in the book if I remember right. Part about the book that I loved/hated (more from it hitting home with me) was basically a slightly more dramatized call center experience that he had to have.

I loved the book, read it in one sitting which I don't normally do. But I'm smack dab in the demographic, graduated high school in 87. I can see the weaknesses here and there, but they didn't matter to me because of all the nostalgia. I'm excited for the movie for the same reasons, but I can't imagine how they will possibly fit all of it in, while still having even a semblance of a plot.

Honestly, the thing I look forward to most is Grimmlokk Grimmlokk watching it and being triggered all over again. If I remember correctly, he detested the book, which always made me chuckle.

Movie looks fun. Book was an atrocity as far as writing goes. People that loved it can't even admit it without caveats about how they know it's shit.

Whatevs, I'll see it in theaters.

The book was trope-filled 80s geek nostalgia pulp-fiction with deus ex machina up the wazoo but it was fine at being that. A lot of the writing did bug me but in there is an entertaining generic action story filled with awesome shit I grew up with in it. If anything I would say this is a chance for the movie to be better than the book but I don't honestly expect that much from the movie either.

They added a giant super-race probably for the sake of it so that's something. And there's almost no way they can make the big battle less impressive than it was in the book.

the nostalgia in the book wasn't the thing that really ruined it for me, albeit cheesy.

It was the most insufferable main character in a book i've ever read that ruined it. This fat little fedora wearing beta child who has thicker plot armor than the entire universe has mass; is the best at absolutely everything. Yeah okay there Ernest Cline.

I'll check the movie out though, it looks like it'll be a fun watch and it's smart of them to incorporate modern characters like Tracer and Chunli

Idk. While the book was only good up until he binged past the first gate to me.

The kid was only good at shit related to the Quest... Because studying it was like his only hobby and he had no money to leave the school world. He was a beta cuck in every other aspect of his shitty life.

It was lazy generic heroes journey shit. Paired with the worst dialog ever written.

It was a buzzfeed article. Only 80s kids will get this, number 7 will give you an underoos splitting nostalgia boner!

It isn't "80s" strictly. It's the dead trillionaire's nerdy childhood. A lot of key puzzles in the book actually reference 70s computer stuff too, as well as 70s D&D. And post-80s geek culture obviously also comes up (and the movie clearly will do similar things, as we've seen Overwatch characters and stuff like that in the trailer).

Not saying 80s aren't a big thing there, but it's not cutting hard boundaries at 01.01.1980 and 12.31.1989.

Ah yes, as a 80s kid I remember the time I played Mad Max on my NES, it was always weird having Charlize Theron just stare at me while I tried to drive a pixel car
