LOL

So finally tried Arena Commander (just solo) 'for real'. Oh my God, this game... lol. I've learned two things thus far:

1) holy shit might as well unplug my mouse, fucking worthless without a joystick
2) 300i vs Vanduul Scythe is like driving one of those red/yellow fisher price plastic kids toy cars vs a Tiger II in battle
Not trying to talk shit here, but I think you just need practice. Mouse is perfectly good, in fact people on the main forums that have expensive joysticks are trying to get mouse nerfed because it's so good at aiming. I play with mouse and have managed to clear all 18 vanduul waves. The trick is to have a ship with lots of gimbal mounts - I use a Gladius and put size 1 gimballed weapons on the wings and a size 2 on the nose. Joystick is better at aiming fixed weapons from what I hear. Fixed meaning not on a gimbal or turret.

One of the problems is that the 300i comes stock with fixed wing weapons. Fixed weapons ARE a bitch to aim with standard control scheme on the mouse. You have an available gimbal mount on the nose, I think, so you could take one of your lasers and put it on the nose (unless it's a size 2 gimbal, then you can only put size a size 1 gun on it - rule of thumb is that weapon size has to be gimbal size -1.) Gimbal mounts are MUCH more accurate with the mouse - basically you're able to move the weapon around on the center portion of your HUD without moving the ship - it makes targetting a lot easier. Your wing mounts are size 2, so you can put size 2 gimbals on them, and then put size 1 weapons on the gimbals, so overall you could have a gimballed nose gun, and 2 size 1 gimballed wing guns. You'll melt vanduul with just a bit of practice. To get gimbals and size 1 guns, you'll need to earn a bit of REC and then you can buy them in the REC store here:Electronic Access - Roberts Space IndustriesI recommend omnisky III's for size 1 guns. Honestly you should just give the Gladius a try - it's free this week and you can see how much better gimballed weapons are with a mouse. (It has a nice gimballed nose gun, stock.)

This game has a pretty steep learning curve for dogfighting - learn to use thrust and spacebrake to manage your turns. I smashed into a lot of asteroids because of drift before I learned that I could speed up my turns a lot by hitting the thrusters (left shift) after I pointed myself in my new direction.

On the holotable in your hangar. Sometimes it fucks up and says you have more guns than you should, then doesn't save the changes, but it does work most of the time.

Mouse is actually currently slightly better than joystick, much better when using gimballed weapons, though someone good with a joystick can probably wreck with fixed guns.

Mouse with fixed guns is doable using the mouse in virtual joystick mode (the default.)

Yea, I think the problem is there's no 'practical' cap for thruster speed with the mouse. My ship just flips around like a ... Dreidel or something.

Turn the mouse sensitivity way down, .1 or lower, for virtual joystick mode. My mouse is at 450 DPI and I'm at .09 sensitivity in game, to give you an idea how low the sensitivity needs to be.

Play some Vanduul Swarm Coop mode with other players for REC. It's easier to learn to shoot ships that are chasing other people than chasing you. :p

I'm gonna need new eyeballs before this game comes out. I am too old for this shit.

Its beem here for a while...

I look forward to earning my ships ingame instead of p2winning them prerelease.
On definitely. For the average player all they should get is a basic starter package. That should be enough to get them going and see if they like it. With enough skill you can best anyone regardless of what ship they are flying even in a starter. You do need some decent weapons on it of course so you would need the military version of each starter for PvP.

Perhaps this is good time to point out yet again that PVP won't necessarily be the thing most people will ever do in game. So there is no need to spend hundreds, let alone thousands, of dollars on fancy military ships. People that want to PVP makes up only a relatively small fraction of the playerbase or at least every single poll conducted has seemed to point this out. We haven't seen the mining, salvaging, exploration and science mechanics yet. They are well described but it doesn't exist in game. I think once it does more people will be fucking around with that than blowing each other up or at the very least it should get more asses in seats if you will. They plan to add them as selectable missions in AC to try out the mission system once it comes on line at the end of this year or sometime next year. How well that works I think will have a much larger impact on people's opinion on this game than PVP as it will be our fist glimpse into how people will spend their time in the PU running those types of missions. Again doesn't require expensive ships as every single starter, with the correct variant or outfitted correctly for the role, can do those roles just not necessarily every single aspect of it or very well (mining).

If this was a real real-game you would start off poor and have to work your way up to owning a ship like serving on a crew for years and years and maybe own a ship one day.

Technically people start off with a military career or by stealing a ship I think under the current design, probably a couple other opt-out options at the start.

Absolutely right. I've been playing almost exclusively Vanduul Swarm Cco-op since 1.1. I just don't want to get in to Battle Royale with 5 other try-hards hacking their xml files so they can run bigger than intended guns, or flying their limited military ships just so they can mop up on average scrubs in an attempt to climb meaningless leaderboards. I'm hoping that, when the PU launches, that type of player will still spend most of their time in the, by then, enhanced Arena Commander sim so that they can play matches and climb leaderboards that way. Those of us that want to live in the PU are going to run into a lot more NPCs than players, and people will be a lot less trigger happy when perma-death, reputation, and loss of gear are on the line (at the very least having to wait for the insurance company to issue you a replacement ship minus any upgrades or cargo you had on it.)

A lot more to do than just PVP, like you said - mining, exploring, trading, salvaging, PVE (9 to 1 ratio of NPC to PC in the verse).

So I managed to kill two Vanduul Scavangers before the game crashed. I found some sort of chaingun thingy and equipped it to my 300i front gimbal mount. That helped me score a few hits but it's a paper ship so meh. I got my two kills in the Gladius, which is much better.

However, I'm not sure what my hangup with this game is but the HUDs are just retarded. First off, the directional indicators are just smaller than they should be. Second, the 'hitbox' indicators on the guns in combat just disappear. The HUD is almost just way too busy for my 24" monitor. I can see where VR would be a huge asset to the game, as would my flight stick/pedals/throttle controller. Right now I just seem to be fighting the HUD and control scheme more than the enemy. I'm also just not sure why this far in the future gimbal mounted guns don't automatically track targets at least the tiniest amount. I have a healthy new respect for the complexities of analog space combat, which is basically how it feels right now.

Switch Flight Lead Pip Reticule to Yes in game settings, that will make the pip indicators easier to understand. When boxes disappear and become a crosshair, that means multiple gun types are aligned on the target.

Also, zooming makes targets easier to hit with the mouse, so make sure to keep zoom bound.

There will be tracking gimbals 'soon' but they'll take up an extra gun size. So you'll need a 3 slot to even mount a size 1 autotracker.

Anyone have experience with a 325a? How does it compare to a Gladius?

Co-worker "finally" loaned me his X52 Pro, can't wait to try it out in game to see how it compares to mouse+keyboard.

I'm not a huge fan of the mouse+keyboard for flying, works well for targeting but it doesn't feel right to me for controlling the ship.

I'm hoping that the X52 will be more natural for flying, and that I don't lose to much precision for targeting.

I'm glad I knew someone who had one so I can try it first before buying.

LOL, no he just finally brought it in today after me begging for 2 weeks, now whether he'll see it back if I like it remains to be seen.

Might wanna hold off for a while:

Hi there everyone and apologies for the lack of updates on this yesterday.

Not much has changed in terms of multiplayer reliability at this point.

- We've been spending time looking at increased debugging logs from over the weekend.
- We've tweaked a few things, such as disabling the Cancel button on matches (this was causing sessions to not terminate correctly).
- We continue to have teams review the core issues, and are finding that there's more to work on. More details on that later this week.
- We continue to see Match Not Found/Infinite Load Scree/Kicked to lobby.
- We further see multiple additional load related problems at a specific concurrency level, which we hit multiple times as day starting around 2pm CDT/8pm GMT and happening.

I feel it's worth noting that as we continue to kick over rocks and find more to work on how our multiplayer services interact, and with the infrastructure that runs it all, there are increasing chances that this likely won't resolved in a hotfix, but something that is addressed through a full publish on a future update.

I know currently it's an incredibly frustrating experience in the Alpha phase of Star Citizen development, but I thought it would be good to set expectations that multiplayer instability can be expected for the next several days - and possibly stretching into weeks - as we continue to hammer away at this.
Also, I heard that 1.1 is not working great for Joystick aiming - lots of chatter on forums about it. Just remember, it's a work in progress as they try to refine the different control schemes.
