Not trying to talk shit here, but I think you just need practice. Mouse is perfectly good, in fact people on the main forums that have expensive joysticks are trying to get mouse nerfed because it's so good at aiming. I play with mouse and have managed to clear all 18 vanduul waves. The trick is to have a ship with lots of gimbal mounts - I use a Gladius and put size 1 gimballed weapons on the wings and a size 2 on the nose. Joystick is better at aiming fixed weapons from what I hear. Fixed meaning not on a gimbal or turret.LOL
So finally tried Arena Commander (just solo) 'for real'. Oh my God, this game... lol. I've learned two things thus far:
1) holy shit might as well unplug my mouse, fucking worthless without a joystick
2) 300i vs Vanduul Scythe is like driving one of those red/yellow fisher price plastic kids toy cars vs a Tiger II in battle
One of the problems is that the 300i comes stock with fixed wing weapons. Fixed weapons ARE a bitch to aim with standard control scheme on the mouse. You have an available gimbal mount on the nose, I think, so you could take one of your lasers and put it on the nose (unless it's a size 2 gimbal, then you can only put size a size 1 gun on it - rule of thumb is that weapon size has to be gimbal size -1.) Gimbal mounts are MUCH more accurate with the mouse - basically you're able to move the weapon around on the center portion of your HUD without moving the ship - it makes targetting a lot easier. Your wing mounts are size 2, so you can put size 2 gimbals on them, and then put size 1 weapons on the gimbals, so overall you could have a gimballed nose gun, and 2 size 1 gimballed wing guns. You'll melt vanduul with just a bit of practice. To get gimbals and size 1 guns, you'll need to earn a bit of REC and then you can buy them in the REC store here:Electronic Access - Roberts Space IndustriesI recommend omnisky III's for size 1 guns. Honestly you should just give the Gladius a try - it's free this week and you can see how much better gimballed weapons are with a mouse. (It has a nice gimballed nose gun, stock.)
This game has a pretty steep learning curve for dogfighting - learn to use thrust and spacebrake to manage your turns. I smashed into a lot of asteroids because of drift before I learned that I could speed up my turns a lot by hitting the thrusters (left shift) after I pointed myself in my new direction.
