I think a lot of it also depends on if Manning is staying or retiring. If he stays, you do not want a complete rebuild of the coaching staff, so they will retain what they can. If he retires, I foresee a bomb going off and rebuilding entirely.
I think this is Elway's way of encouraging Manning to hang 'em or move on without all of the PR pitfalls or disrespect of cutting him outright.

Another angle is Fox thinks Peyton is hanging them up. You're looking at a bloated payroll with the Thomases to pay. And your QB would be Brock Osweiler.
This is a good point. Denver mortgaged the future big time to try to get one more superbowl out of Manning and once he's gone they are probably going to suck for a while. Maybe Fox didn't feel up to a full tear down and rebuild.

I know that gets thrown around a lot, but I can't imagine that's really a thing. Giving up $5mil a year because your team might suck seems like a stretch. Not to mention rebuilding means you have low expectations so there the stress level that most coaches are under isn't there, either

Its more like the tear down gives Elway a chance to go in the direction he wants starting from the ground up with the schemes and coaching. Its the perfect time to do so, there's no way Fox quit rather than being given his walking papers. How often does a HC really step down other than for retirement?

Already being interviewed by the bears. I don't even know how to feel about the prospect of a John Fox lead bears team. Obviously he's a winner but his team's have looked flat in big games and I don't see him bringing much to the table to fix Cutler or the defense.

Bolded the key part. Bears are stuck with Cutler and the only thing I can think of that would motivate someone to take that job is money. Defense is old and shitty, and your QB is a cat. Oh, and his contract is an albatross for at least two more years unless they decide to say fuck it and take the cap hit from cutting him.

John Fox would run it on every third and long and punt on every fourth and short. Catler is not going to have the opportunity to throw all those picks!

*Note I am basing this off of pre-Manning John Fox. John Fox is the worst...I wouldn't wish John Fox on the Jaguars...much less the Bears.

I think Manning just needs to retire. I dunno if its part of his neck injury or just his body finally giving up, but his arm just doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

No, he needs to play one more year. Just to pass Favre on passing yards then he can retire

Then some poor division will have to deal with Offensive Coordinator / QB Coach Manning, and the pain he can bring will continue. Manning's body might be done, but the mind is going to continue to bedevil defenses from the sideline. You read about players commenting on it every now and then, he is such a bastard to play against because he is like an extra coach out there right on the field.

If he can train others in the Jedi ways, some team is going to be very very lucky, and I can't see him just walking away from football forever.

I don't think you guys understand the situation in Denver. After the Patriots game Fox took over the offense and went away from the hurry up Peyton has ran his entire career. Peyton went with it because he's a team guy but that's the reason the offense went to shit even before Peyton got hurt, Fox felt his conservative style was the only way they could win this year. Elway and Manning both disagreed, because the defense wasn't good enough to carry it and the offense wasn't built to play that way. Now Elway gets rid of Fox, comes out publicly stating he wants Manning back, and I bet you Gase will be the next head coach if they get word from Manning he's coming back.

I would, but with Peyton stating he probably won't tell them his decision until March and the very real possibility he doesn't come back that would be dumb.

Favorites in Vegas are Kubiak, Shanahan, and Gase.

If this had nothing to do with Peyton, I'd bet on Shanahan.

But pey loves him some Gase

Kubiak is my horse in this race as he has the inside track with Elway, has had decent success as a HC with the Texans, and has experiencing coaching a team with a chicken-wing armed qb.

I do not think that either of the Shanahans are in the running for the job. Kyle needs a few more years of seasoning before making the next step. Mike is an old fart with the game passing him by.

The 49ers are lobbying hard for Gase. Baalke is in Denver and apparently trying to lock him down for a longer, 2nd interview.
