EDIT:

Really? Because Steve Young admitted that he had to develop as a passer in the NFL also. He was used to using his legs at the time.
Young did a decent amount of that learning while he was the backup though. It isn't the same asking someone to learn that skill set while they are the starter and it's going to cost your team games.

Disappointing that the Niners aren't interested in Holmgren. Bay Area ties, Niners ties, success everywhere he has coached, and a guy that would have gone hard at the Seahawks. He was interested, and the Niners brass weren't. Strike two for them.

Teams up for Hard Knocks:

With the playoff field set and coach firings (likely) done, we can safely deduce the nine teams who can be tabbed this summer. They are the Browns, Buccaneers, Giants, Jaguars, Rams, Redskins, Texans, Titans and Vikings.
I say Browns or Redskins are the only real options if you're the NFL and HBO.

Holmgren said on a Seattle area radio show the only job he would have taken is the Niners job, and that he turned down 2 different offers over the past week or week and a half.

Sometimes you hire a guy for a couple years with the intention of blaming all the transition stink on that person and firing them later. And I do think the 49ers are going to go through some rebuild. Gore is likely done this year and a lot of teams on the rise are going to pick them apart in Free Agency this year. I don't see some of the vets sticking around for another coaching change with the way the division seems to be shaping up for the next couple seasons. I might be wrong, but past history says otherwise.

I'm looking forward to the Texans not finding a QB and wasting the career of JJ Watt. He and Andre Johnson can start a support group.

I started a post about people in that group but got bored doing research. So here's a few names I came up with off the top of my head. Barry Sanders(obvi!), Larry Fitzgerald, and John Hannah.

No Bills allowed from the Kelly era, that was a legit great team. 4 straight SB appearances is crazy.

Tim Brown and probably Cris Carter are two more. I guess you could argue Carter since the Vikings went to the playoffs a number of years in the 90s, but they never really had much success there. Similar to Fitz, Barry, etc.

Those are literally the exact 2 I was researching when I gave up. Was going down a list of all time receiving yards leaders for names that stuck out.

Raiders made the playoffs 6 times in Brown's 16 seasons, 1 SB(loss to Bucs) but they were pretty much a .500 team outside that. Thing with Brown is he's viewed as a kind of stat accumulator who was never a truly elite receiver. Guys like Sanders and Fitz were elite talents who were the best in the world at their position for some stretch. Brown lived in the shadow of Rice and some others. He still belongs in the club though.

Carter was a more acclaimed guy, but the Vikings made the playoffs 8 of his 11 seasons there. They never got him to a Super Bowl, but he wasn't wasted on truly bad teams. He's in more of a Patrick Ewing type class where he was on good teams that just couldn't break through.

Eric Dickerson is another I considered.

Eh, he's probably not on the same ladder as Rice/Carter/Etc., but he's definitely in the rung below. Plus, people forget about what a good punt returner the dude was.

Fair point on Carter. The Ewing comparison is pretty apt.

Dickerson is tough because the Rams were pretty successful for the short time he was there. If not for the Bears being world beaters in '85, they probably would've seen a Super Bowl. The thing is, the latter part of his career was spent on dogshit Colts teams, but he was also way less productive as a runner as well. I'd honestly put Steven Jackson ahead of Dickerson in that group. He got ran into the ground on some horrible Rams teams and in an era of "pass first" offenses, he was pretty damn productive.

Would you guys count Marino? None of his teams were ever stacked.

He had consistent playoff appearances during his career, so he is probably in the same category as Chris Carter.

I would add Tony Gonzolas and Junior Seau to the waste of an elite talent list, though.

Gonzalez is a good candidate. He saw some brief success at the end of his career with the Falcons, but he was mired in horribleness on terrible Chief teams for most of his career.

Seau went to 2 Super Bowls and a couple playoff games. He's probably even better off than guys like Marino and Carter.
