This shit is bonkers. 36 hours ago it was 66 degrees. Now it is 4. Heavy rain turned to ice, which turned to snow, and shut the whole city down.

bonkers

3rd time it's snowed in Austin this winter. Not bad, considering it averages once every 5 years or so. lol.

Its really crazy, last year we had snow on the ground for 2 months (very odd) and almost never above freezing, this winter, its 40 degrees in the middle of January. Its like I don't even live in the same place, both extremes are out of the ordinary in my lifetime. East part of the country getting destroyed this year, thanks for taking it for the team guys.

Just north of New Orleans, 13F tonight with snow today. 70F forecast for Saturday. Really odd.

Christmas 1989. I had been hunting and went to my parents house for family stuff. I was walking up the driveway which faced the Exxon refinery 22 miles away. It was 9F and BOOM before I could make it to the house. Even tho my parents lived 22 miles away they got a small crack in their plaster in along the cathedral ceiling. It was a pretty big boom. Across from Exxon was a gigantic Honda dealer (4 wheelers and motorcycles) and the front of it was all glass. Knocked that totally out and really tore up some of the paper thin ghetto houses across the street from it. Things down here in the petro chemical world don't react all that well to abnormally cold weather for extended periods. After that Exxon bought the houses directly across the street and leveled them. Turned out it was some valve at a tank farm right out front. Could have been much worse.

0 tonight. We had ice/snow Friday which melted Monday when it hit 40 then last night we were supposed to get 1-2 inches and got just over 5. Next day above freezing is Friday. Thursday may hit 30s though. I STILL have this damn stray cat in my workshop. He learned how to use pee pads on day 3 and the litter box last night. Still won't let me touch him and runs when I go down there but soon as I leave he rushes out to see what food I put out and meows like he is lonely. The other cats want their man cave back though.

Read article, some place in Russia it was -86F. I'll pass. Guy froze to death when his car broke down before he could walk to some place.

But yeah pretty chill here, nothing like Bismark. Wind chill of 2F here this morning. Actual temperature is getting pretty close to all time low. Pretty damn cold for this far south and we got 5" of snow late last night. Talked to neighbor yesterday, said he called "his guy" that delievers his firewood since he's been burning a lot. Guy said it was too cold to deliver, seems like now would be the time to make money kind of like plumbers with bust pipes.

Differences between the south and places that get snow. 5 inches and 2 degrees would not stop anything if they normally got snow. I remember delivering papers at 3 am with the snow so deep it was flying over the roof of my car as I plowed through it in my Accord.

Like I said the snow isn't the issue here. It's the ice. I walked out to the road and the road was OK with snow except where trees overhung the road ther was a good 2" of ice in those places and the snow was melting off the trees and freezing on the road in the shade. The snow is melting now the sun is out, be frozen gobs pretty soon.

The county salted the road here oddly enough. It's a state highway but I think during the day it averages 2-3 cars per hour. If I'm outside on a nice day I might see half a dozen cars all day, the mail lady and paper being 2 of those and trash truck twice a week.

A lot of the interstate here is elevated for long stretches, like the spillway is elevated and it's 20+ miles, the causeway is elevated across the lake into New Orleans and that's 20+ miles, the Bonnet Carre is elevated going into New Orleans and that's 15ish miles. They freeze up really quick no matter how much ice/sand they put on it.

I used to work where I could see the I-10 bridge across the MS River and we had a bad ice storm. The state police would escort certain trucks across going one way. All east bound at one, then all west bound at once to give them more room. The 15 seconds the state police weren't looking idiots figured no cops "I can go 80mph up the bridge with a couple of inches of ice on it yee hah". It was pretty entertaining to watch people make it to the top of the bridge and come back down backwards hitting guardrails on both sides. Sent a delivery to Exxon and our driver came back and said he had no issues at all except dodge the idiots piled up on the side of the interstate. Just put the diesel in granny low and went the 10 miles there all elevated at 3mph.

News came on at a truck stop interviewing the guys who couldn't take I-10 west cause it was closed/elevated. The reporter asked "Why don't you take Hwy 190 cause it's open?". Apparently they listened 45 minutes later 3 semi accident crushed multiple cars between at the bottom of the bridge, one of them was they guy interviewed earlier. Maybe should have just kept that to yourself. So now the I-10 is closed and Highway 190 meaning all west bound traffic out of Baton Rouge and thru Baton Rouge from the east/south. Nice job.

Icy road talk reminded me of this video.

Welp that solved the ice issue. Still, even as much as an asshole as I am I would have put the damn phone away and seen what I could have done to save the driver.
