I like that you say you were between jobs when you had a job as a pizza delivery boy. Are you a fucking Jamaican?

Getting 12 to 16 hours of work in a week doing Pizza delivery doesn't pay too well. So it was a low paying part time job, I also had another part time job at the same time. With both combined, I was still slowly going down hill financially.

Forgive me if I don't consider either of them to be a job.

Working part time or low paying jobs is better than not working at all. You wouldn't believe the amount of times I'd interview someone who was unemployed, and when I asked them why they weren't working at their last job they'd say "It wasn't paying enough, so I quit". Okay, you weren't making enough money, but now you're making NO money. It ranks up there with the people who call out because they don't have a ride. I know taxi's and shit cost a lot, but they don't cost as much as losing a whole days pay and getting fired for attendance.

Gamma you seem to think I'm insulting you. Don't tell me you fuckers don't know the old running joke about how hard working Jamaicans are. If you don't, see if you can find the Jamaican skits from In Living Color. It's more than a joke though. The few Jamaicans I know in america all have multiple jobs too.

"What are you, Jamaican?" is saying you bust your ass.

Get a text this morning, before my alarm, from my inbred coworker that the server is down. Since we've been having issues and have a new one on order, I say I'll be in ASAP. I don't even bother trying to log in remotely, because it has actually been down a few times lately, so I figure this is more of the same. I should point out that we sell doors, frames, and hardware for commercial buildings. I am not a server admin or anything remotely close to that, and my normal job title has nothing to do with computers at all, but I know my way around one and no one else there does, so yeah, I get the texts.

I show up, look at the server, it is on and working fine. I ask him what the fuck he's talking about, showing him that it is working. I also point out to him that he's working on files from the server RIGHT FUCKING NOW, so obviously it is working. He says that he can't get any of his emails, and shows me. I say, "You mean the fucking internet is down? As in Comcast? That I have no fucking control over?" So now he's yelling back at me that he specifically came in early today to get caught up, and has been here since 5am and couldn't read or respond to emails and couldn't get *any* work done. I ask him if he remembers me asking him many, many times if he wanted his emails on his fucking phone, and he refused every time because he "doesn't do work from home," and he literally just replaced his Blackberry this year, so the whole android experience is a little too much for him. I tell him that he could have checked his fucking emails that way, but since he doesn't even listen when I tell him for at least the THOUSANDTH fucking time (I honestly don't think I'm exaggerating much with that number) that if you can get on the fileSERVER you are on the fucking server, he probably wouldn't have even thought to check his phone even if it did have access. If you can't get emails, that's the internet, and there's not a fucking thing I can do about that. But thanks for waking me up early so I could come in early and stare at the fucking "no internet" symbol with him.

And of course, as soon as I finish ranting about that, someone else comes and tells me that their computer won't start up, and of course there is a dead fucking hard drive so it was probably good that I was here early to get them set up temporarily until we can get a new computer (that one was due to be upgraded soon anyway, so fuck trying to replace the OS and all that bullshit).

If I could tell my younger self a few tips, #2 would be to never tell anyone I know anything about computers. #1 would, of course, be stock tips, bitcoin, etc. But that's only barely more important than #2! Fuck this shit. I don't even get paid to do this shit.

Void, you guys should go VDI ;-)
If that stands for Virtual Desktop something (Integration maybe?), where everyone just has a dummy terminal and gets everything from the server, fuck no. We don't have a server beefy enough for that, and the new one won't be either. On top of that, I'm assuming it requires some administering, licensing changes, etc. No sir, I don't need any more headaches! I realize that if you explained it and someone came in and set it up and administered it, it would probably save headaches overall, but right now it is 90% fucking around with people's desktop computers. I can do that. Server, not so much. I've muddled my way through it and kept this one going almost 10 years, but I'm terrified of fucking something up because I don't have any server training, at all, so any real heavy lifting gets a call to the local tech company. Btw the one we use is Tech2U, and while I have no idea about their home user help, their business people have been fucking exceptional. They've probably spent twice the hours they've actually billed us for. You don't see that in a company often.

LOL I know, we are implementing VDI on our academic side now - It is scary but fun and I am really enjoying it a lot.

I was mostly just kidding, as everyone will tell you "Just do X" where X is their techincal niche - "It will fix all your problems"

For me, I would say use amazon DAAS (desktop as a service) give them LG Zero clients and - give them a base image that will only do their job - anything outside of that screw off, you don't need to play MOABs - someone junks their VM you roll it back to a few days ago, keep work files on a share that has protection. Then generally, things cant get toasted.

But your place should hire an IT person to deal with things... I am sure there are a buncha things that could be improved.

Live in a double triple-decker situation. We're on the third floor of one house, my parents live on the first floor of the other.

On the third floor of my parent's house lives a woman. I use the term 'lives' loosely because the house is pretty much bare of furnishings after her crackhead husband broke them all in a rage before piling into a van to go make his fortune in Vegas. Don't think he made it very far, because a month later I started seeing his shitty van parked outside some roach hotel on Main St. He was told to not come back. She's barely in the place and has been doing a death spiral for about five years now. Raging alcoholic that has passed out on the landing a few times because she was too drunk to make it up the stairs. She doesn't have a car and works part time at Stop&Shop, but still pays rent (I'm guessing Section 8 vouchers the landlord was forced into accepting because the lady's been a long-term resident, or money from her daughter. She got the fuck out as soon as she could and has a nice little place in a good neighborhood across the city.)

There is a garage and one off-street parking spot that is on a monthly rotation between the two houses. She disappeared for two weeks and, even though it was 'her month', she doesn't have a car. We took to parking in the spot when she wasn't around.

She showed up. Woke my parents up at midnight slamming doors screaming about 'that stupid bitch' who 'stole her parking spot'. Meanwhile every time I've ever seen her she's been soooo very nice and polite. Mom goes to landlord and mentions the fact that alkie is slamming shit around and screaming in the dead of night. Is informed that it's not even that bitch's month for parking, it's the second floor's- a grandmum who is absent most of the time herself and doesn't seem to use the space at all.

Twice now I'm leaving my apartment and look out and see the lady's husband hiding out in the fucking fenced-in veggie garden in the back of the house. Keeled over on shit. Ducks behind the building when I leave so that I can't see him from the sidewalk. Another two times there have been random dudes sitting on the back porch, and the second time it was a guy so strung out on whatever-the-fuck that he's falling off the steps incoherent.

I'm starting to worry for my parents. They maintain a beautiful home and my dad and I have taken over tending to the flower gardens and roses, they've sunk a lot of money into updating their apartment's interior. At some point a while back the husband rang the doorbell in tears and asked my dad for money and started crying that he wanted what they have, that 'he just wanted bliss.' Apparently didn't take it too well when my dad said his 'bliss' is from both of them working their goddamn asses off for 40 years without cessation. I've got visions of these assholes getting a toot on and throwing a rock through their window out of spite, or worse.

Dude, where the fuck do you live? It sounds like a shit-hole similar to what I lived in when I was in Waco... controlled housing, drugs, hookers. So glad I live in a lower middle class suburb, where it's pretty nice, but not everyone is white or stuck up my ass about the grass not being super green all the time.

This late 50's consultant on a conference call keeps going "Mhmm" when folks are explaining things without allowing a gap or pause. "Mhmm" or "right" or "ok" is interjected about every 5-10 seconds. Fuckin' worse than someone who constantly says, "well, you know", after every 3rd or 4th word....

Tried to get my driver license back the other day, Ohio makes you reverse through some fucking cone obstacle course. Barely bumped the last cone with passenger side mirror, now I have to take a fucking $75 4 hour driving class to try it again...

The idiot CIO at my previous company did the same bullshit. His ass didn’t know shit and didn’t want to understand. So he would just say, “yep yep...uh huh....yep....” the entire time anyone spoke to him. Glad he got fired.

Not sure I can even adequately describe this without drawing a picture. There's an intersection near me that's fucked up due to construction. It's a major surface street and a freeway. 4 lanes each way for the surface street and 2 lanes each direction for the service road (the freeway itself is an overpass). The lights for the people going straight on the service road are kind of far back, and people who are taking lefts onto the service road (from the surface street) keep seeing the red light and think they have to stop. So here we are, we're taking a left, we have a left arrow, the idiots round the corner, see a red light, and stop. Then don't go until the cars behind them get a green light.

The first time I saw it, I was like, OK, fucking student driver here or something, but not a big deal because there are two lanes. I pull into the other lane, honk, motion for her to go, then get in front of her.

Today though, some idiot did that and the person behind them got into the other lane and stopped too. So now people with common fucking sense can't even get around them. I'm actually on the service road trying to make a u turn, but the construction has the u turn lane closed. We wait through that light cycle and because of their idiocy, when the cross traffic gets a green light they can't go because there's gridlock from people who were trying to make a left onto the surface street (or make a u turn like me). People who entered the intersection with a reasonable belief they could make it through. Those fucktards finally go and we wait for the next cycle, then 2 more fucktards do the same fucking thing. This time I start laying on my horn. Everyone in front of me starts laying on their horn. The fucktards finally get the message and go. Well one of them goes. Which is good because it means I get to flip off the other fucktard as I pass them. I think it's the first time my horn has ever done anything other than make me feel better.

I mean seriously, I get how you can see that red light and go OH SHIT! I did too the first time I saw a poorly placed light like that. It took me less than 5 seconds to assess the situation and realize that was for the people going straight. Just a quick glance to the right at the line of cars that are not moving is all you need to know it's safe to go. You had a green arrow for chrissakes. In what scenario does it seem reasonable to you that you're supposed to stop in the middle of the intersection when the cross traffic is also stopped?

I'm moving in a couple of months and while this had its own share of issues to get going, I'm getting rustled atm because everything in my fucking appartment is breaking down and I obviously don't want to buy new shit when I'm about to move. Fucking water has been shit and the appartment trustee(or whatever it's called in english I just googled that I'm not sure, company that deals with all the repairs and contractors to fix stuff in the appartment) has been fucking slow assing it for months, the dishwasher just died again(died a few months back then fixed itself after a few days, hoping it resurects itself for another few months) and now the fucking oven turns off on its own every 2minutes. All the stuff is old as fuck in this appartment, I didn't change them when I moved in cause they still worked and been here for 8years or so, so now it's all starting to go to shit, but literally months before I'm out. And all together which makes it even more annoying. Internet fucked itself also a month back but luckily this was fixed in a few days this time(last year it was down for like 2weeks and a half, that was great).

Can't wait to get the fuck out of here.

A shithole, basically. Think the only thing I've gone Mist over on here is the various bullshit that's been happening in my home city as it gets more run down, poorer, and blacker. We live in something of a remaining middle-class enclave the straddles the line between the hill (toney) and downtown (Mogadishu.) Go a block in one direction its 19th century colonials and dentists. Block the other way its section 8 housing, addicts, and abject poverty.

This morning got woken up at 5am by a cop banging on our door threatening to tow our vehicles. They're filming scenes for some movie at the garage a block down from us and put the tow warnings out last night at 9pm. Wardrobe and staff trailers parked right outside the house and the local color milling around everywhere. I've seen my downstairs neighbor maybe 10 times in the 2 years since they've moved in but you bet his ass is out there right now on the street corner and has been for hours, either acting like he's part of the work crew or relishing the attention he's getting from all the people walking up asking what's going on. This is probably the most exciting thing that has happened to him in a while, having 'a movie' happen on his doorstep. That's the kind of place I live in.
