So Los Angeles sucks

Downtown LA is on the come-up, I'd suggest buying down there now if you can. The place will look completely different in 5 years as long as the real estate market doesn't tank again, 12 new condo towers and about another 20-25 other projects. Probably 15,000 or so new housing units with all the amenities that will be put in to support it. I'm going to buy a unit or two in the first tower we're working on which should close late 2016/early 2017.

As far as visiting now, whoever just stuck you downtown and by Little Tokyo is an idiot. The Core is where it's at, everything around Ace Hotel is bitching. One or two nights there then West LA or South Bay for the rest of the time.
What kind of industry is LA known for outside of porn (And even then they are driving that out)?

What kind of industry is your City known for? I grew up in Minneapolis and it's basically known for making flour, yet all the flour mills are closed. What a stupid fucking question.

Software and Biotech. Both lucrative industries which lead to high valued Real Estate.
I didn't mean to hit submit that early on that prior comment (Then forgot about it...)

What is driving up the prices in LA? If there are not a mass of high-paying jobs there is no reason for it to go up so quickly.

LA != SF

The housing markets are changing, people are no longer wanting to live in the suburbs. I just read an article about the shift (too lazy to find the source), but it's no longer the get a cozy house with a picket fence. Everybody is trying to live in the core in some fancy high rise condo. Take a look at Portland or Austin, I know in PDX we have so many new condo i can't even keep track of them.

If I did visit LA I'd want to take a 90's gangster rap tour of Compton and Watts.

Does this exist? It should.

I feel like I've been hearing about the migration towards city life in America for a while now. Hopefully some of these cities can get their act together and put out proper public transport to make getting around easy. I could see myself living in a Scandinavian city since they seem to all have cheap and easy to use public transport but I hear nothing but horror stories about public transport in major US cities.

The reason being is that the high-paying jobs are in the cities or around them (ex: 128 / Kendall Square in MA or Silicon Valley)

Watching the Westford area where IBM/Redhat are in MA die off is gleeful. Everyone with money is consolidating within the 128 belt.

Rapid gentrification is hilarious and horrifying at the same time. (House has increased ~15% in the last year)

But you could always commute. It just seems like this generation is less inclined to having a long commute than the previous. Or maybe it is done of those things where the next generation just wants something different than their parent's generation. I read somewhere that wood and tile floors are "in" on a mostly generation cycle because the next generation wants something different than the previous. So our current generation is all about wood floors because mostly we grew up with tile/vinyl throughout the house. Which is why you find so much wood underneath tile in these remodel shows because the previous generation grew up with wood throughout the house and wanted to replace their homes with tile.

The newer generations have less and less desire for cars which also means fewer are willing to sit on a 2 hour bus or train commute.

I don't even have that option in Atlanta. I drive about 50 minutes one way and that's my only way into work.

Back on topic, I totally watched Predator 2 when I got home from LA. Seemed like not much had changed.

People moving to cities is just the natural order of things. Urban dwellers surpassed rural dwellers somewhat recently within the States, right?

I think I would be happy if I never owned a car again. That 20 minute walking commute is so nice.

Do you work at one of those super lucrative businesses? If you do then I'd have to gather from your comments that you're the dumbest motherfucker they ever hired.

First of all even a trained monkey could Google businesses based in the LA area and come up with a host of companies (Google being one) that have large operations here and pay rather well.

Second, I'd have to gather you've never even been to LA as you have no fucking idea what you're talking about as the entirety of LA is Urban. The issue with LA is a question of density and of peoples desire to live more densely which would allow for a better use of public transport.

Aside from the stupidity there is a point to be made though in that just like SF this new housing is not affordable to the average person in LA. We've been working with the City of LA lately to try to find developers to build low-to-mod income housing and without it turning into section 8 it's a real pain in the ass.

Watts is 70% Latino and Compton is half/half at best shading towards majority Latino if it isn't already. Bit late on that.

After the Rodney King riots they shipped a shit load of them up to Lancaster> We can probably arrange something up there for you as the second and third generation kids up in that area follow in the family footsteps but since it's in the middle of no where I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for.

Oh, you know, not much...

-L.A. County has a larger GDP than the countries of Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Norway and Taiwan.
-About 40% of all containerized goods entering the U.S. pass through L.A., the largest seaport in the Western Hemisphere.
-L.A. County is the largest manufacturing center in the U.S., with more manufacturing jobs than the state of Michigan.
-Today, it's the third largest metropolitan economy in the world, with a population of 13 million and a GDP of over $700 billion.

Yes, but which of those are absurdly overpaid and lead to rapid property value growth.

I work in the Aerospace/Defense industry in LA. It is huge here. Tons of space stuff; SpaceX, Boeing Satellite Systems, JPL, and the Aerospace Corporation just to name some of the big ones. The Air force Space and Missile Systems Center in LA spends something like 10 billion a year on acquisitions. There are tons of jobs out here that provide good incomes.

Ingoring SpaceX are they inflated incomes. Are they "Googler" salaries.

Part of the reason behind house inflation are a rapid influx of "rich" people.

Are there other places that pay the salaries (I assume) SpaceX does. Example: Entry level positions paying 120K+ at Google.
