So Los Angeles sucks

So far so good. We did a couple bus tours around LA, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. We saw two celebrities: Some woman from Days of Our Lives (didn't know her they just pointed out she was famous) and Sara Gilbert. We waved and she waved back.

They were fun. My wife had to do the TMZ tour so we did.

We spent half the day at Santa Monica. The place was pretty amazing for a Clevelander.

I'm in LA for a few days on vacation, then heading to Vegas.

While trying to avoid people's general hatred of this liberal bastion of Hollywood fappery, what's good in this city? It'll be in April and I'll have a car and I'm staying in Santa Monica.

I love my good food and movie history. Also any oddities are welcome. Also hiking is in my sights.

What's good in 2026?

Honestly, Los Angeles is a pretty shit tourist place. It's more of a "I like to go out to eat or enjoy nightlife" type of place. But everything's so spread out, it's basically a shit show. Honestly, the only "thing" I would recommend is the Getty. Maybe the La Brea tar pits, too.

Otherwise, the only thing I found interesting about LA was driving around places and recognizing them (for instance my first time through I drove through Reseda (Karate Kid), Malibu, and places like that).

But things like the Hollywood walk of fame are terrible unless you like bums. And it's not like it's close to anything else. Same with Venice Beach. First time I went there was close to 20 years ago and it was trash then, and I can't imagine things have gotten better.

Same deal with San Diego. It's a pretty town (can't say that about LA), but outside of the zoo, Midway, and maybe La Jolla, there's not much. Gaslight is the only place worth a shit for restaurants/night life.

Really, the gem of California is nature. Driving the PCH is awesome. The national parks from Joshua Tree to Death Valley to Yosemite.

Also, I can highly recommend Valley of Fire as well. We've camped there a few times and it's awesome.

My thoughts on LA after spending 4 nights.

- Aside from Manila, this is the most sprawling city I've been to. It's just neverending.
- So much of the city is grimey as fuck.
- So much of the city is insane wealth.
- Pacific Palisades is still in bad shape.
- Chinese Theatre area is as tacky as Niagara Falls.
- Traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The issue is that so much is blocked by the mountains. Toronto is much more nightmare traffic, but once settled in downtown Toronto you can ditch the car for the most part. The drivers in this city ain't as fucking nuts as Toronto drivers.
- Compton and Watts is fine during the daytime.
- Loved the taco trucks
- Loved the Korean food
- Loved Portos
- Comedy Store shows are great
- Fuck Mario Galaxy for taking all the largest true 70mm screens in the city

- There's something satisfying about driving in LA listening to 90s rap
- The Blue Scientology building is gross looking
- There are legit great hiking trails all over. Most are a bit too busy for my liking tho. These old Korean grandmas haul ass up these Hills
-Paying for parking everywhere it seems
- La Brea tar pits tar seem to bubble into the parking lot where I step into them when I get out of my car. FML

In summary I enjoyed my time.
