Picca is good, the guy that created it is no longer associated with it though. His name is Ricardo Zarate, think he has a new restaurant which might be worth checking out. It's a pop-up type thing only open Thurs-Saturday or something like that.

Never had Sushi Zo, I usually go to Wa as it's two old Matsuhisa chefs that are really good and it's low key.

So far so good. We did a couple bus tours around LA, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. We saw two celebrities: Some woman from Days of Our Lives (didn't know her they just pointed out she was famous) and Sara Gilbert. We waved and she waved back.

Interesting, never known anybody to actually do the bus tours. Sounds like it's time to hit the beaches for you my friend.

They were fun. My wife had to do the TMZ tour so we did.

We spent half the day at Santa Monica. The place was pretty amazing for a Clevelander.

With the weather the beaches should be great tomorrow. Either head south to Manhattan Beach or up into Malibu, I'd say go as far as County Line to Neptunes Net, shouldn't be that crazy on a Monday. Ventura county beaches you can drink on which County Line beach is.

I'm in LA for a few days on vacation, then heading to Vegas.

While trying to avoid people's general hatred of this liberal bastion of Hollywood fappery, what's good in this city? It'll be in April and I'll have a car and I'm staying in Santa Monica.

I love my good food and movie history. Also any oddities are welcome. Also hiking is in my sights.

What's good in 2026?

Idk shit about LA but Vegas has a lot of great shit around it.

Red Rock Canyon is right outside the city and has a bunch of easy hiking or you can even just drive through the loop and get out and look at the scenery. Maybe even spot Alex Honnold wandering around it.

Hoover dam is 20 or 30 minutes away and is worth visiting, really cool view up on the bridge that overlooks it too.

Mt. Charleston is 40 minutes away and is really cool. You go from desert to scrub brush to small pines to straight up alpine/snow in the short drive up the mountain. Some amazing hikes and views up there. Feels like you’re in Colorado mountains but you’re in the middle of a desert.

Valley of Fire is 45 minutes away and is wild. It looks like another planet, with giant bright red rocks formations jutting out of the ground, with bizarre shapes from years of wind cutting into it. There’s tons of heiroglyphs carved into the creosote all throughout the canyon along hiking paths that are 4,000+ years old. The Mouse Trap is my favorite trail there and is really easy.

Vegas the city is a shithole like other large American cities, the stuff I just mentioned is all so much better than what you’ll see in the city. Valley of Fire being my favorite out of all those.

Honestly, Los Angeles is a pretty shit tourist place. It's more of a "I like to go out to eat or enjoy nightlife" type of place. But everything's so spread out, it's basically a shit show. Honestly, the only "thing" I would recommend is the Getty. Maybe the La Brea tar pits, too.

Otherwise, the only thing I found interesting about LA was driving around places and recognizing them (for instance my first time through I drove through Reseda (Karate Kid), Malibu, and places like that).

But things like the Hollywood walk of fame are terrible unless you like bums. And it's not like it's close to anything else. Same with Venice Beach. First time I went there was close to 20 years ago and it was trash then, and I can't imagine things have gotten better.

Same deal with San Diego. It's a pretty town (can't say that about LA), but outside of the zoo, Midway, and maybe La Jolla, there's not much. Gaslight is the only place worth a shit for restaurants/night life.

Really, the gem of California is nature. Driving the PCH is awesome. The national parks from Joshua Tree to Death Valley to Yosemite.

Also, I can highly recommend Valley of Fire as well. We've camped there a few times and it's awesome.

I go to scroll through this thread from the start as it's pretty short, I see on page one of this thread. Aug 10, 2015:

LA is towards the bottom of my list of places I want to visit. Vegas is down there too.

I guess it's from over 10 years ago, I still saw the irony
