Wow, that broken skull is one of the few injuries I've seen that actually disturbs me. How do you put that back together? It even looks like the eye socket bone is crumbled.

IT/Software career thread: Invert binary trees for dollars.

When I interviewed for my current job, I ended up declining to eat lunch, partially because of nerves and partially because I didn't want to be answering questions while scarfing pizza. Then in the middle of my presentation that afternoon I could feel my brain short circuiting from lack of...

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Not my field so I can't comment on the science of it, but it doesn't bode well when the sources are Popular Science and an Omics journal.

Apparently one of the players from VB didn't show up for their game vs DC, so DC wins by forfeit.

Word is that Universe has left team secret and is returning to EG. So both teams will have to go through open qualifiers for TI. Edit: and Bulba is joining Secret

    DOTA 2

I know it's early, but liquids Riki pocket strat seems like a failure so far. Sentries and dust just turns him into a melee creep that Newbee can farm. Edit: Hahaha, what do I know? What a vicious finish. Lycan lineups can end a game so fast once you win a fight or two.

    DOTA 2

Pretty ugly from Secret. I wish they had stuck with the previous roster that won them a major. Hopefully they get on the same page by TI (not holding my breath that they will do well at the upcoming major)

What a garbage lineup from Secret with elimination on the line.

    DOTA 2

New Secret definitely still has some timing / positioning / communication issues to work out. When it's available, check out the stolen black hole and ravages in game 2 of their empire series today. Such a game changing hero when you can get those good steals.

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

I know that some companies do that, but most don't. However, a more recent trend has Scientist I / II / III tiers for experienced bachelor's or master's holders as a way of advancing beyond the RA level. In those cases, Senior / Principal Scientist are typically PhD-level. Again, I'm not...

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Coming from the pharma and medical device industries, most companies draw the following lines as requirements for different positions: Scientist: PhD in scientific discipline Research Associate: bachelor's or masters in scientific discipline, reports to scientist. Engineer: bachelor's or...

    The Back to School Thread

I'm a little confused, and maybe this stems from the differences between the US and Finland. You're currently a lawyer, performing academic research on information systems (with a doctorate? As a professor?), but your true passion is theory of criminal law? But you are considering med school...

Univ. of California to be First College to Give Scholarships For Video Game Players

The ongoing joke at UCI was that the school could afford a science library or a football team. They still don't have a football team. Too bad they didn't pick dota.

Vanguard - I don't give a fuck if it's dead, It's still brown as fuck (Download link in 1st post)

Vanguard had some fantastic bugs. I remember, as a bard, that I could solo almost anything because with the right combination of levitate and speed you can get yourself stuck inside a rock where you couldn't target anything and nothing could target you, but pbaoe dot songs that you started...

    DOTA 2

Secret seemed unstoppable when they had arteezy and zai until they crashed and burned in TI. This lineup has a similar all-star feeling, so I hope they don't under perform when it matters again (though they did win like 3 straight lans leading up to TI). Then when they reformed with...

    DOTA 2

Great back and forth game so far between alliance and liquid. Alliance looked ready to take rosh and a lane or two of rax but loda overextended a couple times and got killed at the beginning of fights. Now after a 15k gold swing for liquid alliance is starting to even things out again. Liquids...

    Smartphones

Just received two Nexus 6's from Amazon after the most recent deal ($250 for 32gb, $299 for 64gb). Amazing phone so far. Only complaints are the size will take some serious getting used to, and the camera isn't mind blowing (but still comparable / better than our LG G2's). Crazy that these are...

    What is your education level?

PhD in biomedical engineering. I work at a pharmaceutical company as a scientist. It's pretty neat. I went back to school after a year in industry following my bachelors degree (also in biomedical engineering) since since i saw that bachelor's / masters holders in biotech/pharma have slower...

    Fantasy Football: 2015 Advice Thread

I, too, am a victim of Lacy. Lost by 6 with playoffs on the line, and I started Lacy over Jeremy Hill. I figured that Hill had burned me too many times this season, and at least Fat Eddie was hitting his stride and was a reliable source of points.

Chromecast - the new Google TV

Lately, my Chromecast has been awful for casting a video tab from my computer, and for casting Hulu. The video tab cast had always been glitchy, but now it regularly freezes for 10-20 seconds while the video is still running smoothly on my computer, out the video cast freezes while the slobs...

    Tablets

I'm confused... They are clearly pushing productivity by adding the keyboard, but there is no touchpad? If I'm on the couch, or on a plane, I'm not going to be using a mouse, but I'm definitely not going to bother with a touchscreen for tasks like spreadsheet or document editing. If it had a...

    What do you do?

I thought that the value of an MBA is directly tied to the rank of the school where you earned it. I'm not saying that having no MBA is a better choice, but if you are planning on getting on eventually then it's probably worthwhile to see how prestigious you can go. If you otherwise wouldn't get...

    What do you do?

I had actually condensed my resume down to a single page, and after I was hired I was told that they would have preferred multiple pages so I could provide more details. They actually wanted me to list publications and presentations like you would in a CV. It really depends on who is reading it...

    Best place to live

Born and raised in San Diego. Can't recommend it enough based on your criteria, but cost of living and traffic will always be an issue. If you want to be within 20 minutes of the beach, 350k won't buy you anything in some places (Carlsbad), and won't buy you much in others. Living closer to the...

    Whats rustling your jimmies?

Yep, poor phrasing; black widow are almost exclusively in the garage or in nooks and crannies outside the house. The one place they set up camp that really bothers me is the patio furniture. If we haven't used it in a few weeks is guaranteed there are at least a couple living under the seat...

    Whats rustling your jimmies?

I think I average 1-2 black widow kills a week around our house. Fortunately their webs are easy to identify (extra sticky, and strong enough to pluck gently like a guitar string) and they rarely leave their webs. I'd rather deal with them than brown recluses, which wander a lot and like to hide...

    College Choice for Veteran

I'm going to disagree with this point. Plenty of people I knew in grad school at an R1 university got their bachelor's at small liberal arts colleges or relatively unknown state schools. I won't argue that a more prestigious undergrad can help in many ways, but if you have a killer GPA, good GRE...

    College Choice for Veteran

Are you planning on getting a graduate degree? In general (not sure if this is true for econ), people only care about your latest degree. So a B.S. from a random directional statue school won't matter if you get an advanced degree at a "better" school

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

Interesting - the good news is that Mayo is behind it, which means it has a better than average chance of actually reaching clinical trials. The bad news is that some people believe senescent cells can help confer a resistance to some types of cancers, since they are no longer proliferating...

Science!! Fucking magnets, how do they work?

In fairness, as a scientist, I will readily argue that the vast majority of physicians aren't scientists. And I say that because my day-to-day revolves 100% around my research. I'm either at the lab performing experiments, or analyzing data from these experiments, or writing papers or grants to...

    What do you do?

Question regarding salary negotiation. I have two offers in hand following my PhD. The first is a post doc that pays approximately 40-50k + medical, and my wife and I would work in the same building (the professor is willing to hire both of us, similar salary). It's also out of state, but we...
